Photorefractoriness and sexual response in aging partridge kept under constant long- and short-day photoperiods.

The duration of post-juvenile refractoriness was studied in Red-legged partridge kept under a long constant 16-hr photoperiod from hatch to 55 months of age. A second group of partridge was kept under a short constant 8-hr photoperiod from hatch to 38 months of age. Body weight was measured bimonthly, and daily egg production kept on birds reaching sexual maturity. Eighty one percent of all birds were alive at 36 months of age. Birds kept under a constant 16-hr photoperiod were generally heavier at all ages than comparable birds kept under 8-hr photoperiods. Refractoriness was terminated in 38

Day/night differences in the stimulation of adenylate cyclase activity by calcium/calmodulin in chick pineal cell cultures: evidence for circadian regulation of cyclic AMP.

In chick pineal cell culture, stimulation of adenylate cyclase with the diterpene forskolin was greater during the subjective night than during the subjective day. This rhythm of cyclic AMP (cAMP) stimulation mimicked the rhythm of unstimulated cAMP measured previously during LD cycles from flow-through culture. Direct measurement of adenylate cyclase activity in permeabilized cells revealed an adenylate cyclase activity activated by Ca2+/calmodulin during the night but not during the day. However, this difference in adenylate cyclase activity at two times of the circadian cycle is apparent on

The electroencephalogram of idiopathic generalized epilepsy.

Idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) is classified into several subsyndromes based on clinical and electroencephalography (EEG) features. The EEG signature of IGE is bisynchronous, symmetric, and generalized spike-wave complex; although focal, irregular, and so called "fragments" of discharges are not uncommon. Other characteristic EEG features include polyspikes, polyspike-wave discharges, occipital intermittent rhythmic delta activity, and photoparoxysmal response. Both human and animal data suggest involvement of the thalamus and the cortex in the generation of spike-wave discharges in IGE

Altered melatonin production in TGR(mREN2)27 rats: on the regulation by adrenergic agonists, antagonists and angiotensin II in cultured pinealocytes.

Transgenic TGR(mREN2)27 rats (TGR), carrying an additional mouse renin gene, are characterized by severe hypertension, an inverse circadian blood pressure profile, a blunted response to photic entrainment signals, and an increased nocturnal production of the pineal hormone melatonin. In order to evaluate the contribution of the over-expressed renin-angiotensin system to the function of the pineal gland in TGR, we studied the adrenergic and angiotensin II (Ang II)-mediated regulation of melatonin synthesis using dispersed pinealocytes from TGR and from Sprague-Dawley control rats (SDR). Reflex epilepsy and reflex seizures of the visual system: a clinical review.

Reflex epilepsy of the visual system is charecterised by seizures precipitated by visual stimuli. EEG responses to intermittent photic stimulation depend on the age and sex of the subject and on how stimulation is performed: abnormalities are commonest in children and adolescents, especially girls. Only generalised paroxysmal epileptiform discharges are clearly linked to epilepsy. Abnormal responses may occur in asymptomatic subjects, especially children. Photosensitivity has an important genetic component. Some patients are sensitive to patterns, suggesting an occipital trigger for these even

American Clinical Neurophysiology Society Guideline 5: Minimum Technical Standards for Pediatric Electroencephalography.

This revision to the EEG Guidelines is an update incorporating the current electroencephalography technology and practice. It was previously published as Guideline 2. Similar to the prior guideline, it delineates the aspects of Guideline 1 that should be modified for neonates and young children. Recording conditions for photic stimulation and hyperventilation are revised to enhance the provocation of epileptiform discharges. Revisions recognize the difficulties involved in performing an EEG under sedation in young children. Recommended neonatal EEG montages are displayed for the reduced set of

Prepulse effects on the photic eyeblink reflex: evidence for startle-dazzle theory.

Weak visual prestimulation effects on the early (R50, 50-80 ms) and late (R80, 80-200 ms) components of the eyeblink response to bright light flashes were studied in 16 normal individuals. At a lead time of 120 ms, R50 was inhibited relative to no-prepulse control trials, whereas R80 was facilitated. According to the proposed startle-dazzle theory, luminance onset transients trigger an initial response, R50, that is functionally related to startle. Sustained stimulation then activates prolonged eyelid (R80) and pupil responses, which serve to minimize retinal bleaching. Although the sensitivit

[Sleep and epilepsy].

The frequency of epileptiform discharges shows a wide intraindividual variability; it is influenced by the sleep-waking cycle and by the different stages of sleep: generalized seizures (tonic-clonic, tonic and myoclonic) are activated in nonrapid eye movement sleep, partial seizures tend to have more complex relationships with sleep states. Generally, sleep stages I and II and transit stages have an activating effect on discharges. Rapid eye movement sleep has an "anticonvulsive" effect and focalizes paroxysmal activity. Sleep recordings are useful for localizing a focus in temporal lobe seizu

The electroencephalogram of elderly subjects revisited.

The EEGs of 98 elderly volunteers were compared with those of 84 patients with a recent cerebral infarction who had achieved a stable clinical course. All subjects were uniformly evaluated according to a special protocol. The elderly volunteers were accepted for the study if they had no history, signs or symptoms of central nervous system disease. The EEGs were found to be significantly different between the two groups of subjects in several aspects. These included not only possible abnormalities, focal or diffuse, but also some normal features, such as alpha frequency and responses to photic

Whole-Brain Monosynaptic Afferent Projections to the Cholecystokinin Neurons of the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus.

The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the principal pacemaker driving the circadian rhythms of physiological behaviors. The SCN consists of distinct neurons expressing neuropeptides, including arginine vasopressin (AVP), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), cholecystokinin (CCK), and so on. AVP, VIP, and GRP neurons receive light stimulation from the retina to synchronize endogenous circadian clocks with the solar day, whereas CCK neurons are not directly innervated by retinal ganglion cells and may be involved in the non-photic regulation of the circadian c

Photic-induced sensitization: eye-specific neural plasticity and effect of behavioral state.

We reported previously that exposure to repetitive visual stimulation in ordinary adult rats results in acquisition of an enduring increase in magnitude and change in character of visual cortical responses. This sensitization is consistent with experience-dependent neuroplastic changes, but could also reflect alterations in response with behavioral state during testing. The aim of this study was to distinguish the contributions of behavioral state and neural plasticity in this photic-induced sensitization. We used repetitive light-emitting diode flashes delivered monocularly and recorded elect

Electrical signs of an oligosynaptic visual projection to the rat hippocampus.

In rats with pons transection photic or optic nerve stimulation elicits a response in dorsal hippocampus with approximately with same latency, amplitude and time course as the response in striate cortex. After optic nerve stimulation a positive polyphasic deflection with the last peak at 10 ms is followed by a larger biphasic major deflection with peaks at 15 and 25 ms and later, slower deflections at intervals of 125 ms. The polyphasic deflection is maximal in the inferior part of the hippocampus but does not reverse polarity; the other deflections reverse above and below an isoelectric point

Epilepsy in vacuolating megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts.

Vacuolating megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC) is a disorder characterised by acquired macrocephaly, developmental motor delay of varying degrees, slowly progressive cerebellar and pyramidal signs, and initially preserved intellectual function. More than 60% of the published cases had epileptic seizures. In this study, we analysed the seizures and EEG findings of nine patients with MLC. Six patients (66.6%) with moderate to severe neurological impairment had epilepsy, four with partial and two with generalised seizures. The EEG of five epileptic patients revealed

Enhancement of REM sleep during extraocular light exposure in humans.

This study examined the effects on sleep of light administered to an extraocular site. A 3-h photic stimulus was applied to the popliteal region during sleep in 14 human subjects. Each subject also underwent a control stimulus condition during a separate laboratory session. The proportion of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep during the 3-h light administration session increased by an average of 31% relative to the control condition. The frequency but not the duration of REM episodes was altered during light exposure, thereby shortening the REM/non-REM (NREM) cycle length. No other sleep stages we

Melatonin for sleep EEG.

Melatonin 3 mg and secobarbital 100 mg assigned randomly were given to 40 psychiatric patients for sleep induction during EEG recording. Nine patients who did sleep naturally comprised a comparison group. EEGs were read blind; most were interpreted as mildly abnormal or within normal limits. No statistically significant differences between the three groups were observed in response to photic stimulation, hyperventilation or in frequency of paroxysmal variants. The electroencephalographer was able to identify the melatonin patients significantly more accurately than those who received secobarbi

Severe myoclonic epilepsy associated with mitochondrial cytopathy.

We describe a case in which severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy is associated with a disturbance in mitochondrial function. EEG traces showed diffuse spike-wave patterns inducible by intermittent photic stimulation. Laboratory analyses revealed high lactic acid levels in cerebrospinal fluid and urine, without metabolic acidosis or high lacticacidaemia. Muscle biopsy showed a slight increase in the number of mitochondria, which had a tendency towards subsarcolemmal locations, and clefts in the myofibrillar membrane that contained granular material staining positive for oxidative enzymes and re

Incidence of photosensitive epilepsy in unselected Indian epileptic population.

The recognition of photosensitivity depends upon the finding of an abnormal EEG response to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS). Photosensitive epilepsy being the most common form of reflex epilepsy, has been studied most extensively and is reported to account for 5-10% of the epileptic population in general. One thousand unselected epileptics hailing from different parts of Northern India were screened for photosensitivity, both clinically and on a standard protocol of IPS-provoked EEG recordings. Six patients (mean age 14.5 +/- 3.56 yr) were found to be photosensitive: 4 had generalized, 1

Cerebral dysfunction revealed by EEG mapping in the schizoform epileptic psychosis.

Twenty schizophrenia-like psychotic patients suspected of epilepsy were explored using EEG techniques (recordings in the 10-20 International System, source derivation, EEG mapping and EEG spectral reaction mapping by photic and somesthetic stimulation). In 16 of them, latent epileptic disorders were found. EEG spiking foci could be located either: (a) in temporal, (b) fronto-basal, or (3) in the sagittal-line leads. A corresponding associated dysrhythmia was clearly revealed by EEG mapping. On EEG spectral reaction mapping a suggestive aberrant displacement of the area of maximal sensory respo

[Long-term EEG recording in comparison with sleep deprivation and other provocation methods in epilepsy patients].

37 epileptics with routine records without paroxysms were subject to 24 hours mobile long-term EEG registration and independently 24 hours sleep deprivation EEG including hyperventilation and photic stimulation. The anticonvulsive treatment was not changed. In 14 cases we could prove epileptiform discharges (= positive finding) by using both methods, in 13 after sleep derivation (10 at rest, 3 only during hyperventilation) in 7 in the long-term record and in 6 of them both after sleep deprivation and in long-term record. As epileptiform discharges we rated spikes, spikes ans slow waves, epilep
