Headache characteristics and frequency of migraine in patients with cervical artery dissections.

Headache is a common symptom of cervical artery dissections (CAD). Sometimes, it can be the only symptom and mimic migraine. We aimed to investigate headache characteristics and previous history of migraine in CAD patients, and to compare headache features between patients with internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD) and vertebral artery dissection (VAD). We investigated 53 CAD patients (n = 28 with ICAD, n = 25 with VAD). Demographic and clinical data were evaluated retrospectively. Headache information was obtained from the patient interviews with a structured questionnaire (based on the I

A systematic review and narrative synthesis of functional neuroimaging studies for chronic ocular surface pain.

Chronic ocular surface pain (COSP) is a debilitating condition of the eye driven by nociceptive, nociplastic, and neuropathic mechanisms. While individual studies using functional neuroimaging techniques to investigate ocular pain exist, the full extent, methodologies, and cumulative findings of this body of literature have not been systematically synthesized. Using a systematic review approach, we identified 5 articles evaluating the use of functional neuroimaging in COSP patients from an initial pool of 643 unique studies. All studies used functional magnetic resonance imaging exclusively as

A mistaken diagnosis of Molluscum contagiosum in a HIV-positive patient in rural South Africa.

A 25-year-old gentleman presented with multiple small ulcerations and papules covering a large portion of his face and neck, associated with general malaise. He was HIV seropositive with a total CD4 count of 78 cells/µl. A diagnosis of Molluscum contagiosum was made and the patient discharged. He re-presented 3 weeks later with a 2-day history of progressively worsening headache associated with photophobia and diarrhoea. The generalised skin eruption had worsened, now involving his torso and upper limbs. Cerebrospinal fluid examination was highly positive for cryptococcal antigens and the pati

Multimodal imaging of bilateral and symmetrical dark without pressure retinal lesions in a child.

A girl in her early adolescence was referred to our paediatric clinic due to the presence of bilateral pigmented retinal lesions. The patient complained of photophobia. Best corrected visual acuity was 6/6 in either eye. Fundus examination revealed bilateral symmetrical hyperpigmented, flat, well demarcated lesions in the nasal mid-peripheral retina. Multimodal imaging was performed including retinography, fundus autofluorescence and optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT showed typical hyporeflectivity of the outer retinal layers (ellipsoid zone and outer photoreceptors) at the transition ar

Unilateral agenesis of the internal carotid artery in CHARGE syndrome.

CHARGE syndrome is a multisystemic disorder comprising colobomas, heart defects, choanal atresia, retarded growth and development, genital hypoplasia, ear anomalies and deafness. The CHD7 gene on chromosome 8q12.1 was recently shown to be a major gene involved in the etiology of this syndrome. We describe a girl with CHARGE syndrome who had a novel mutation of CHD7 associated with agenesis of the left internal carotid artery. She had presented with recurrent episodes of photophobia and vomiting since the age of 6 years. Since her symptoms were well controlled by cyproheptadine, migraine-like a

Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma in a Patient With Jalili-Smith Syndrome.

We describe a 29-year-old Iranian male with Jalili-Smith syndrome (JSS), who presented with acute angle closure glaucoma. JSS is a rare autosomal recessive oculo-dental disorder characterized by cone-rod dystrophy and amelogenesis imperfecta. Though the disease is observed worldwide, many cases are concentrated in the Gaza Strip. Consanguinity is an important risk factor. Patients typically present with photophobia, nystagmus, and enamel deformation. Our patient exhibited nystagmus, photophobia, cataracts, hyperopia, narrow-angle glaucoma, marked thinning of the retina, and bull's eye maculopa

Reduced Visual Quality of Life Associated with Migraine is Most Closely Correlated with Symptoms of Dry Eye.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with migraine frequently report ocular or visual symptoms including aura, photophobia, and eye pain. Using validated instruments, our group previously reported that due to these symptoms, patients have marked reductions in visual quality of life. In chronic migraine, these reductions can be as substantial as those reported for other neuro-ophthalmic diseases such as multiple sclerosis with optic neuritis and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Because the instruments take several different dimensions into account, we were unable to determine which ocular sy

Understanding visual snow syndrome: A retrospective study from a tertiary eye care center.

PURPOSE: Visual snow syndrome is a debilitating neurological condition. A comprehensive eye examination may not detect any abnormalities in this condition. Presently the condition is recognized only through the history elicited. Hence, it becomes important to understand the presenting complaints and profile of these patients. A retrospective study at a tertiary eye care center was undertaken to achieve this goal. METHODS: Electronic medical records of patients presenting to a Binocular Vision and Orthoptics clinic were reviewed. Records of the patients containing keywords such as "light sensi

Gene-independent therapeutic interventions to maintain and restore light sensitivity in degenerating photoreceptors.

Neurodegenerative retinal diseases are a prime cause of blindness in industrialized countries. In many cases, there are no therapeutic treatments, although they are essential to improve patients' quality of life. A set of disease-causing genes, which primarily affect photoreceptors, has already been identified and is of major interest for developing gene therapies. Nevertheless, depending on the nature and the state of the disease, gene-independent strategies are needed. Various strategies to halt disease progression or maintain function of the retina are under research. These therapeutic inte
