[Relationship of Executive Functions and Processing Speed with Cortical Gray Matter Morphometry in Healthy Adults and at The Early Stages of Schizophrenia].

13 male patients with schizophrenia and 18 age-matched healthy men underwent structural magnetic reso- nance imaging and completed the Stroop task which included the switching condition. As compared to con- trols, the patients showed slowing of color naming in the neutral condition and a reduction ofgray matter vol- ume and thickness in the frontal and temporal areas. In healthy subjects, the time of color naming was neg- atively correlated with gray matter volume in the left cuneus. In the schizophrenia group, there was a positive correlation between the time of color naming and cortical thic

Speed of processing of the visual-orthographic and auditory-phonological systems in adult dyslexics: the contribution of "asynchrony" to word recognition deficits.

This study investigated whether "asynchrony" in speed of processing (SOP) between the visual-orthographic and auditory-phonological modalities contributes to word recognition deficits among adult dyslexics. Male university students with a history of diagnosed dyslexia were compared to age-matched normal readers on a variety of experimental measures while event-related potentials and reaction time data were collected. Measures were designed to evaluate auditory and visual processing for non-linguistic (tones and shapes) and linguistic (phonemes and graphemes) low-level stimuli as well as higher

Processing Speed and Verbal Learning Ability as Predictors of Assessor-Rated and Ecological Momentary Assessment Self-Reported Functioning: Findings from AMP SCZ.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Processing speed and verbal learning are linked to functioning in people at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P). However, a clear understanding of these relationships has been limited by the use of single-value assessor ratings of functioning and limited incorporation of self-report and longitudinal functional assessments. This study aims to examine the effect of processing speed and verbal learning on longitudinal assessor-rated and self-reported functioning. STUDY DESIGN: Individuals at CHR-P (n = 1282) and community controls (n = 425) who participated in Acc

Baseline Oculomotor Parameters Are Prospectively Associated with Cognitive Processing Speed at 6-Year Follow-Up in Multiple Sclerosis: An Exploratory Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) commonly impairs information processing speed, which is not well captured by conventional disability metrics. Oculomotor paradigms engage neural circuits frequently affected in MS and may provide objective cognitive correlates. We investigated whether baseline oculomotor parameters are prospectively associated with processing speed at ~6-year follow-up. Methods: Forty-four patients with MS underwent a standardized oculomotor battery (visually guided saccades, antisaccades, and sinusoidal smooth pursuit). The Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) was

Do executive functions and processing speed mediate the relationship between socioeconomic status and educational achievement? Analysis of an observational birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There are large and persistent social inequalities in children's educational attainment, with children from more socioeconomically disadvantaged families consistently having lower attainment. Despite this being widely reported, the mechanisms underlying the association between socioeconomic disadvantage and educational attainment are not well understood. It is important to understand the potential mechanisms by which socioeconomic disadvantage may impede on educational outcomes, as this knowledge could then be used to help target possible interventions to improve educational outcom

Neural Adaptation at Stimulus Onset and Speed of Neural Processing as Critical Contributors to Speech Comprehension Independent of Hearing Threshold or Age.

Background: It is assumed that speech comprehension deficits in background noise are caused by age-related or acquired hearing loss. Methods: We examined young, middle-aged, and older individuals with and without hearing threshold loss using pure-tone (PT) audiometry, short-pulsed distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (pDPOAEs), auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), speech comprehension (OLSA), and syllable discrimination in quiet and noise. Results: A noticeable decline of hearing sensitivity in extended high-frequency regions and its influence on lo

Assessing processing speed and its neural correlates in the three variants of primary progressive aphasia with a non-verbal tablet-based task.

Prior research has revealed distinctive patterns of impaired language abilities across the three variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA): nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA), logopenic (lvPPA) and semantic (svPPA). However, little is known about whether, and to what extent, non-verbal cognitive abilities, such as processing speed, are impacted in PPA patients. This is because neuropsychological tests typically contain linguistic stimuli and require spoken output, being therefore sensitive to verbal deficits in aphasic patients. The aim of this study is to investigate potential differences in p

Information-processing speed in mildly disabled relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients correlates with volumetry of optic chiasma and subcortical grey matter nuclei.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease leading not only to physical disability but also to cognitive dysfunction. The aim of our study was to test cognitive functions of MS patients with mild relapsing-remitting form and to find out the relationship between cognitive functions and brain volumetry. METHODS: 52 patients (RRMSp) and 23 age-related healthy participants (CON) were enrolled. Mild disability was defined by mean EDSS 2.4 (≤ 4.0), and by median of disease duration 5.2 years. Cognitive status was tested using Single Digit Modality Test (SDMT). Br

Working memory and information processing speed in children with myelomeningocele and shunted hydrocephalus: analysis of the children's paced auditory serial addition test.

Working memory and information processing speed were examined in children with myelomeningocele and shunted hydrocephalus using the Children's Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (CHIPASAT). The CHIPASAT was administered to 31 children with myelomeningocele and shunted hydrocephalus and 27 healthy siblings, all between 8 and 15 years of age. They also completed other standardized measures of working memory and processing speed. Children with myelomeningocele made fewer correct responses than siblings, although the magnitude of group differences declined as the rate of stimulus presentation inc

Influence of auditory-verbal, visual-verbal, visual, and visual-visual processing speed on reading and spelling at the end of Grade 1.

This study examined cognitive processing speed through four modalities (auditory-verbal, visual-verbal, visual, and visual-visual) at the end of Grade 1 and how it influences reading and spelling. The subjects were 124 French-speaking children, selected for their contrasting performance on reading and spelling tasks. The children in the first group (N=69) were average readers; the second group of children (N=55) performed worse or much worse on all reading and spelling tasks. The experimental design consisted of a set of 10 tasks administered in two sessions. The major findings reveal that: (1

Preserved effects of monetary and social rewards on processing speed and episodic memory in aging: Evidence from task performance and skin conductance responses.

Improving processing speed and episodic memory in older adults is important for supporting their daily functioning. Although rewards can increase sympathetic activity and improve cognitive performance in younger adults, and aging may be associated with changes in arousal-related neurotransmitter systems, it remains unclear whether reward effects are altered in older adults. This study investigated the age-related effects of monetary and social rewards on processing speed, episodic memory, and sympathetic arousal. Twenty-nine adults aged 18-35 and 30 adults aged 56-73 completed an incentive del

Evidence of impaired processing speed and cognitive control in recovered COVID-19 patients: The role of cognitive slowing in long COVID memory impairment.

Cognitive impairment is among the most reported symptoms in post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection. These impairments, often termed "brain fog" include difficulties in memory, attention, executive function, and processing speed, significantly impacting individuals' quality of life and daily functioning. This study investigates the hypothesis that survivors may exhibit impaired processing speed (PS) and cognitive control (CC), crucial components of cognitive functioning that potentially underlie learning and memory disturbances. An observational study was conducted with 61 participants (me

Computerized Working Memory Training in Remission From Major Depressive Disorder: Effects on Emotional Working Memory, Processing Speed, Executive Functions, and Associations With Symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Remission from major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with residual symptoms related to reduced functioning, quality of life, and relapse risk. Previous studies have raised questions about mechanisms involved-in and affected by cognitive training. This study investigated the associations and changes among depressive symptoms, rumination, processing speed (PS), executive functioning (EF), and emotional working memory (e-WM) pre- post computerized working memory training (CWMT). METHOD: Twenty-nine remitted participants were included in a pre- post pilot study of within-sub

New LLLT protocol to speed up the bone healing process-histometric and immunohistochemical analysis in rat calvarial bone defect.

A new low-level laser therapy (LLLT) protocol is proposed and compared to another previously studied, in animal models, aiming to establish a more practical LLLT protocol. Protocol 1, the same used in other works and based on the clinical LLLT protocol for bone regeneration, consists of punctual transcutaneous applications in the defect region with fluence of 16 J/cm(2) every 48 h for 15 days. Protocol 2, proposed in this work, consists of three sessions: the first application directly on the defect site with fluency of 3.7 J/cm(2), during the surgical procedure, followed by two transcutaneous

Continuous forecasting of range-dependent ocean sound speed field: Diffusion model meets multi-output Gaussian process.

Environment-aware underwater acoustic detection and communication require precise forecasting of the range-dependent sound speed field (SSF) at any given time. Recently, methods such as Gaussian process regression (GPR) and conditional diffusion models have shown advanced performance in SSF forecasting. However, limitations remain: standard GPR fails to capture the range-depth spatial correlations, and conditional diffusion models struggle with continuous forecasting. To address these issues, we integrate multi-output GPR and conditional diffusion models to enable continuous forecasting of ran

Research on High-Efficiency and No-Additive Physical Aging Equipment and Process of Baijiu Production Based on High-Speed Jet Catalysis.

Newly brewed Baijiu often contains harmful substances such as mercaptan and methanol, which are spicy and harmful to health. At present, this is mainly solved by long-term cellaring, but this is faced with some problems such as a long cycle, high cost, high fire hazards and so on. Therefore, based on the principle of liquid jet cavitation explosion catalyzing the heterogeneous association of Baijiu molecules, this paper first developed the physical aging process and equipment without radiation and additives. Then, based on the traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of high-speed

Axial Impact Response of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Structures in High-Speed Trains Based on Filament Winding Process.

The continuous increase in the operating speed of rail vehicles demands higher requirements for passive safety protection and lightweight design. This paper focuses on an energy-absorbing component (circular tubes) at the end of a train. Thin-walled carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) tubes were prepared using the filament winding process. Through a combination of sled impact tests and finite element simulations, the effects of a chamfered trigger (Tube I) and embedded trigger (Tube II) on the impact response and crashworthiness of the structure were investigated. The results showed that bo
