Maxillofacial trauma refers to any injury to the face or jaw caused by physical force, trauma, the presence of foreign objects, animal or human bites, and burns. Facial defects can be devastating in their impact on physical structure and function of the affected individual, leading to potential compromises in quality of life. Restoration of facial defects, especially nasal defects, is a difficult challenge for both the surgeon and the prosthodontist. Here is a case report of partial nasal defect caused by trauma, rehabilitated with a magnetic nasal prosthesis made with silicone elastomers usin

PURPOSE: To review the literature focusing on the clinical outcomes of KeraKlear (KK) (KeraMed), a foldable intrastromal keratoprosthesis.
METHODS: We searched 6 databases using 4 keywords: KeraKlear, Foldable Keratoprosthesis, Intrastromal Keratoprosthesis, and Non-penetrating Keratoprosthesis. Included studies had to be conducted in vivo on humans, published until January 3, 2023, and had to investigate the implantation of the KK. Eyes were considered at high risk of keratoprosthesis retention failure whenever there was an active inflammatory ocular surface disorder or in case of previous K

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: For prosthetic joint-associated infection (PJI), a regimen of debridement, antibiotics, irrigation, and retention of the prosthesis (DAIR) is generally accepted for acute infections. Various risk factors associated with treatment success have been described. The use of local antibiotic carriers (beads and sponges) is relatively unknown. We retrospectively analyzed risk factors in a cohort of patients from 3 hospitals, treated with DAIR for PJI.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 91 patients treated with DAIR for hip or knee PJI in 3 Dutch centers between 2004 and 2009 were retrospe

PURPOSE: A new self-expanding patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occluder was designed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Percutaneous closure of surgically created aortopulmonary shunts was attempted in 19 dogs. The occlusion device consisted of a nitinol wire frame tightly woven into a cylinder with a flat retention disc. A polyester-filled frame was used in the last six procedures. A 6-F introducing sheath was advanced across the aortopulmonary conduit into the descending thoracic aorta. The prosthesis (attached on a stiff delivery cable) was advanced through the introducing sheath. The retention disc wa

An elderly woman was referred to hospital because of fever and deterioration of her general condition. Due to urinary retention, the woman had undergone long term catheterization and had a urinary infection for years. In addition, the partial right hip prosthesis was found to be dislocated. While changing the catheter it slipped into the renal pelvis, and the balloon of the catheter was filled at the level of the ureteropelvic junction. The condition, observed in computed tomography scanning, was quickly restored, and the patient managed to avoid complications. Drifting of an urethral catheter

This article reports the successful treatment of a patient with a malocclusion and missing maxillary lateral incisors with an unusual implant-prosthetic rehabilitation in place of the canines. A man, 25 years 5 months of age, was referred by his general dentist with the chief complaint of retained maxillary deciduous canines. He had a skeletal Class I and an Angle Class I malocclusion with an open-bite tendency and prolonged retention of both deciduous canines. The malocclusion was treated with extraction of the maxillary deciduous canines, a fixed edgewise appliance, and implant-prosthesis re

BACKGROUND: The most common postoperative complication relating to reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is instability. The risk factors for luxation include a lack of the subscapularis tendon or inadequate soft tissue tension, the prosthetic design, the bone deficiency, the obesity, and mechanical factors such as bone impingement and implant position.. To prevent this luxation, we can insert a retentive polyethylene humeral cup, The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes, the incidence of luxation and scapular notching between standard versus retentive polyethylene

BACKGROUND: The absence of an intact auricle can lead to both functional impairments and psychological distress, prompting individuals to withdraw from social interactions. Consequently, there is a pressing need for functional and aesthetic rehabilitation in these patients to restore their psychosocial well-being. When surgical reconstruction is not optimal, an auricular prosthesis can be fabricated and fixed with glue to the skin or with a magnetic fixation on osteointegrated implants.
OBJECTIVES: This comparative study aims to evaluate the efficacy of auricle defect restoration using prosth

Surgical and prosthodontic restoration of the midfacial region following tumor resection has always posed a considerable challenge, as this area serves crucial functional and esthetic roles. Being diagnosed and subsequently treated for facial tumors can have an immense psychosocial impact on a patient, as the resulting defects are often disfiguring, and lead to an inability to masticate, swallow, and speak clearly. Provision of an immediate facial and dental prosthesis at the time of surgery can limit these side effects and help reduce mental duress on these patients and their families, as wel

Prosthetic rehabilitation is essential for maintaining postoperative oral function after maxillary reconstruction. However, the maxillary prosthesis becomes unstable in some patients because of extensive palatomaxillary resection and drooping of the transferred flap. In such patients, maintaining sufficient oral function is difficult, especially if the patient is edentulous. To achieve prosthetic retention, the authors performed microvascular maxillary reconstruction with a slit-shaped fenestration in the midline of the hard palate. Maxillary defects after subtotal or total maxillectomy were r

The hand performs essential functions such as grasping, touching, holding, and manipulating, while also contributing significantly to personal identity and psychological well-being. Partial hand loss compromises both aesthetics and function, often resulting in emotional distress. A well-designed prosthesis can restore the hand's length, preserve stump sensitivity with a thin interface, protect the residual limb, and offer pressure and positional feedback. While implant-based prostheses yield superior results, their high cost limits accessibility. For transmetacarpal and carpometacarpal amputat

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new device specifically designed for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) occlusion based on PDA anatomy. Percutaneous closure of aortopulmonary shunts was attempted in 10 dogs. Shunts were surgically created in the location and orientation of PDA. The occlusion prosthesis consisted of a cylindrical frame filled with polyester and a 32 degree angled retention disk. The delivery system of the device included a 6 Fr thin-walled Teflon introducing sheath, an antirotating delivery catheter, and cable. Complete occlusion of the shunt was obtained in nine animal

The results of 24 infected total knee arthroplasties (22 patients) that were treated by irrigation, debridement, and retention of the prosthetic components were prospectively studied. Strict criteria were used for the selection of this method of treatment. Patients had to be less than 30 days after index arthroplasty (postsurgical group) or had to have less than 30 days of knee symptoms (hematogenous group). In addition, there had to be no radiographic signs of osteitis or evidence of a loose prosthetic component. Patients had one to three irrigation and debridement procedures depending on sys

BACKGROUND: Research on the etiology of excessive strain at the implant neck, which may be associated with technical and biological complications, is still lacking.
OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study aimed to compare strain development at the implant neck between cementretained and screw-retained implant-supported fixed restorations, as well as among 3 prosthesis designs, using strain gauge analysis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six prosthetic configurations were fabricated and divided according to their retention mechanism: single crowns - cement-retained and screw-retained (SC-c and SC-s, respective

Patients who cannot tolerate total coverage of the hard palate or whose maxillary arches are poorly formed, because of congenital, developmental or surgical defects, may be unable to wear a conventional complete denture. These patients can be successfully treated with implant-supported prostheses that cover only a minimal amount of palatal tissue. With spark-eroded castings, very precise restorations can be constructed to fit such implant supports. However, these castings are so expensive that cost precludes their use for many patients. This article presents an alternative approach, developed

Many clinical studies and literature reviews have suggested that bar and ball attachments in maxillary and mandibular implant-supported overdentures (ISOs) should be indicated only when there is sufficient interocclusal space (IOS; minimum = 30 mm). The aim of this clinical report was to present the prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with adenoid cystic carcinoma associated with microstomia due to radiotherapy (IOS = 23 mm). ISOs offer superior retention and greater stability than conventional obturators, so that base extensions were kept to the minimum. Placing the balls parallel to the p
