The effects of habitual resistance exercise training on cerebrovascular responses to lower body dynamic resistance exercise: A cross-sectional study.

Dynamic resistance exercise (RE) produces sinusoidal fluctuations in blood pressure with simultaneous fluctuations in middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAv). Some evidence indicates that RE may alter cerebrovascular function. This study aimed to examine the effects of habitual RE training on the within-RE cerebrovascular responses. RE-trained (n = 15, Female = 4) and healthy untrained individuals (n = 15, Female = 12) completed four sets of 10 paced repetitions (15 repetitions per minute) of unilateral leg extension exercise at 60% of predicted 1 repetition maximum. Effects of aerobic training, resistance training, or both on brain-derived neurotrophic factor in adolescents with obesity: The hearty randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a protein that plays a critical role in modulating cognition in animals and humans. Aerobic exercise often increases BDNF in adults, but effects of this exercise modality and others among adolescents remain uncertain. This study examined the effects of aerobic training, resistance training, and combined training on resting serum BDNF levels in adolescents with overweight and obesity. After a 4-week pre-randomization treatment, 304 post-pubertal, adolescents with overweight or obesity (70% females) aged 14-18 years were randomized to one o

High intensity functional training versus traditional resistance training effects on inflammatory, metabolic, and physical outcomes in overweight men a randomized controlled trial.

Overweight and obesity are major global health concerns linked to chronic diseases. This study compared the effects of high-intensity functional training (HIFT) and resistance training (RT) on metabolic, inflammatory, and physical markers in overweight men. Thirty-four overweight men (31.91 ± 2.44 years, BMI 27.78 ± 1.47 kg/m2) were assigned to the HIFT (n = 13), RT (n = 10), and control (n = 11) groups. The HIFT included four sets of 30-second exercises at 30% 1RM, whereas the RT involved three sets of 12 repetitions at 70% 1RM. Both interventions were performed thrice weekly for eight weeks.

Comparison of conventional resistance training and the fly-wheel ergometer for training the quadriceps muscle group in patients with unilateral knee injury.

A fly-wheel ergometer (FWE) offering resistance training of the knee extensors has been designed for space travel and found to be effective during bed rest. The possibility exists that this device is also effective in training the knee extensors after knee injury. The purpose of this study was to compare the FWE to standard knee extensor training equipment for their effects on individuals with a history of knee injury, a group who commonly suffer from weakness of the knee extensors that effects their function. Twenty-nine subjects completed the study, which included tests of knee self-assessme

Large increases in resistance training volume do not impair muscle hypertrophy or anabolic-catabolic molecular signaling in trained individuals.

Skeletal muscle hypertrophy results from the integrated regulation of anabolic and proteolytic processes in response to mechanical loading. Although increases in resistance training (RT) volume are used to increase mechanical stress, it remains uncertain whether large and abrupt volume progressions could exceed muscle adaptive capacity by disrupting the balance between anabolic and catabolic signaling. The present study investigated whether a large increase in weekly RT volume (+120%) leads to impaired hypertrophic outcomes and intracellular regulatory responses compared with a modest increase

The Effect of Creatine Supplementation on Lean Body Mass with and Without Resistance Training.

Background/Objectives: Creatine monohydrate (CrM) is considered to be one of the most effective supplements for enhancing lean body mass during resistance training. However, CrM may influence body water content, potentially confounding lean body mass measurements. Therefore, this randomised controlled trial assessed the effect of CrM alone on lean body mass following a supplement wash-in, and when combined with a resistance training program. Methods: Sixty-three (34 females, 29 males, 31 ± 8 years) participants were randomised to supplement with CrM (5 g/day for 13 weeks: wash-in + 12-week res

The Effect of Resisted Sprint Training on Acceleration: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Resisted sprint (RS) training, such as sled or parachute towing, is commonly used for sprint training among field sport athletes. While RS training is frequently employed by athletes and coaches, there is little research on its benefits, especially compared to unresisted running (UR) training programs with similar training volumes. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the effectiveness of RS training on acceleration compared to UR training. Potential sources were limited to peer-reviewed articles published in English prior to June 12, 2022, and gathered from the EBSCOhost, PubMed,

Evidence for Simultaneous Muscle Atrophy and Hypertrophy in Response to Resistance Training in Humans.

PURPOSE: Human skeletal muscle has the profound ability to hypertrophy in response to resistance training (RT). However, this has a high energy and protein cost and is presumably mainly restricted to recruited muscles. It remains largely unknown what happens with nonrecruited muscles during RT. This study investigated the volume changes of 17 recruited and 13 nonrecruited muscles during a 10-wk single-joint RT program targeting upper arm and upper leg musculature. METHODS: Muscle volume changes were measured by manual or automatic 3D segmentation in 21 RT novices. Subjects ate ad libitum duri
