Mild Bilateral Hemorrhagic Occlusive Retinal Vasculitis Following Intracameral Vancomycin Administration in Cataract Surgery.

A patient underwent cataract surgery with prophylactic intracameral vancomycin (Vancocin; Pfizer, New York City, NY) in each eye, 2 weeks apart. Four weeks after, the patient presented with a mild bilateral hemorrhagic occlusive retinal vasculitis (HORV). A systemic work-up was negative for syphilis, toxoplasmosis, Bartonella, tuberculosis, and sarcoidosis. The patient was treated with oral steroids and one intravitreal steroid injection in the left eye. Ten months after presentation, the patient's vasculitis was quiescent. Although the literature describes primarily severe forms of HORV, the

History of an abusive head trauma including a lucid interval and a retinal hemorrhage is most likely false.

A lucid interval (LI) is the period of time between regaining consciousness after a short period of unconsciousness, resulting from a head injury and deteriorating after the onset of neurologic signs and symptoms caused by that injury. The incentive for this study was the case of a father who left his 14-week-old infant with the nanny in whose custody the infant had collapsed. The nanny denied involvement in the injury, and the father became a suspect. Of 47 abusive head trauma (AHT) cases, 8 were found to have an LI in the past. The history of the cases were thoroughly analyzed and compared w

Retinal hemorrhages as a presenting sign in an adolescent patient with hepatosplenic gamma-delta T-cell lymphoma.

Hepatosplenic gamma-delta T-cell lymphoma is a very rare, aggressive form of peripheral lymphoma first recognized in 1990. Patients often present with organomegaly, anemia, adenopathy, and B symptoms. Rarely in the literature is a pediatric patient described with this subtype of peripheral T-cell lymphoma. Also, retinal hemorrhages have never been described as a presenting symptom of hepatosplenic gamma-delta T-cell lymphoma. We describe an adolescent patient with hepatosplenic gamma-delta T-cell lymphoma who presented with retinal hemorrhages, massive splenomegaly, bone marrow involvement, an

Hyperleukocytosis and retinal hemorrhages after chemotherapy and Filgrastim administration for peripheral blood progenitor cell mobilization.

A 49-year-old man with mantle cell lymphoma received 2.5 g/m2 of cyclophosphamide and 900 mg/m2 of etoposide followed by 10 microg/kg/day of Filgrastim for PBPC mobilization. This was complicated by marked hyperleukocytosis and retinal hemorrhages. The patient's symptoms improved gradually following leukopheresis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing this complication in patients undergoing PBPC mobilization. Early recognition of symptoms is important in order to stop Filgrastim and initiate immediate leukapheresis.

Senile disciform macular degeneration complicated by massive hemorrhagic retinal detachment and angle closure glaucoma.

Six eyes developed angle-closure glaucoma secondary to total hemorrhagic retinal detachment that occurred as a rare complication of senile disciform macular degeneration. The patients were all elderly with known senile macular choroidal degeneration. They had no history of eye surgery and experienced sudden loss of vision followed by pain. Balloons of retinal detachment were pushed tightly against the lens in a characteristic "Y suture" appearance causing shallowing of the anterior chamber and glaucoma. Pathologic examination of three eyes revealed that the choroid was not detached but that a

Experimental and clinical evidence of multilayer retinal damage caused by subretinal hemorrhage in neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with subretinal hemorrhage (SRH) is associated with a poor visual prognosis. This study investigated the effects of SRH in neovascular AMD on visual function and retinal integrity. An SRH mouse model, established by subretinal injection of autologous blood, exhibited early apoptotic cell death across both outer and inner retinal layers, ultimately resulting in retinal ganglion cell loss and inner retinal thinning. Clinically, we retrospectively reviewed consecutive treatment-naïve neovascular AMD patients who visited Kyoto University Hospital

Describing a New Mechanism of Retinal Detachment Secondary to Ophthalmic Artery Vasospasm Following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: An Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The pterygopalatine ganglion (PPG) and ophthalmic arteries (OpAs) have important roles in ocular autoregulation and retinal and visual functions. The relationship between PPG neuron density, OpA vasospasm, and retinal detachment in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has never been studied. METHODS: This study was conducted on 25 rabbits. Five animals were in the control group (GI; n = 5), five in the sham group (GII; n = 5), and 15 in the study group (GIII; n = 15). After injection of 1 cc serum saline into the cisterna magna in the sham group, and autologous blood in the SAH group, th

Vitreous hemorrhage and Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment that developed after botulinum toxin injection to the extraocular muscle: case report.

BACKGROUND: The authors report a case of a rare complication that occurred after botulinum toxin injection to the extraocular muscle, which was easily overlooked and successfully corrected by surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old female patient visited our clinic for diplopia and ocular motility disorder after removal of an epidermoid tumor of the brain. At her initial visit, her best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/20 for both eyes. An alternate cover test showed 45 prism-diopter esotropia and 3 prism-diopter hypertropia in the right eye. Following 6 months of observation, the devi

[Intracerebral hemorrhage after systemic thrombolysis in patients with occlusion of the central retinal artery. Report of 2 cases].

Pharmacological thrombolysis is a valuable therapeutic modality for embolic arterial occlusion. Nevertheless, thorough evaluation of the indications is imperative to avoid serious complications. The most frequent complication is hemorrhage. Of these, the intracerebral hemorrhages are rare, but when they do occur they are an immediate threat to life they are accompanied by very severe complications, and they have an extremely poor prognosis. Within 58 months 361 patients were treated at our neurosurgical clinic with intracerebral hematomas. In 22 patients (6.1%) the hematoma developed as a comp
