Congenital lesions of the scalp must be approached with caution because of the possibility of intracranial extension. Cutaneous angiosarcomas are rare and constitute less than 1% of all malignant mesenchymal tumours. Most angiosarcomas of skin arise in the following clinical settings: 1. face and scalp of elderly 2. following lymphoedema and 3. post radiation. We present a case of an elderly man presenting with scalp lesion of 18 months duration. Histological examination of the biopsy revealed features of an angiosarcoma, which showed imunohistochemical positivity for factor VIII related antigen.

Psoriasis of the scalp is a frequently occurring condition affecting approximately 2% of the Western population. The sharply demarcated erythematosquamous lesions with silver-white scaling characterize scalp psoriasis. Quality of life can be seriously reduced by this condition and therefore long term treatment is needed in most patients. We report an 11-day-old baby who presented with necrotizing fasciitis of the scalp from which Escherichia coli was cultured. Treatment consisted of administration of parenteral broad-spectrum antibiotics and debridement. Skin grafting of the resulting scalp defect was not permitted by the parents. The wound healed with scar tissue over 3 months.

BACKGROUND: Mycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous tumefaction with presence of grains or granules. Etiological agents include bacteria or filamentous fungi. Mycetoma due to dermatophytes is uncommon, mainly occurring in Africa. To our knowledge, no case has been reported in the West Indies. Only two observations of Micosporum canis mycetoma in humans have been reported in the literature. We report a third case of mycetoma of the scalp caused by this fungus.

In this article, a quite rare giant cavernous hemangioma located in right frontoparietal region of a 16 year-old boy is presented. Cavernous hemangiomas are commonly seen in extremities, neck, face and sometimes scalp, cutaneous or subcutaneous in localization. Giant cavernous hemangioma in the right frontoparietal region have been seen in two cases so far. In this article, we discussed the differential diagnosis, characteristics and therapy methods of giant cavernous hemangioma of the scalp.

We report on a female aged 13 years, whose scalp hair began to disappear at the age of 9 years, leaving only sparse wispy hairs in the parietal-occipital region. Eyelashes, eyebrows and body hair were unaffected. There were no signs of ectodermal dysplasia on the skin, nails, teeth and eyes nor other congenital abnormalities. The family pedigree showed 15 relatives similarly affected according to an autosomal dominant mode of transmission. Clinical, genetic, histological and ultrastructural aspects led to a diagnosis of hereditary hypotrichosis simplex of the scalp (Toribio-Quiñones type).

Tissue expanders have emerged recently as a new option for the treatment of alopecia. The method consists in expanding the scalp beyond the defective area. In this way, some disadvantages like the alterations in the donor area and low density of hair follicles, that may result from other techniques, are avoided. We report a 71-year-old Japanese woman who noticed approximately 120 small yellowish cysts on the scalp from nine months before her first visit. An incision made into the cysts discharged oily yellow material. Biopsy of a lesion disclosed that the cysts had typical features of steatocystoma multiplex histologically. Six young African patients are described with erosive pustular scalp lesions leading to extensive ulceration. No bacterial or fungal cause was found. Biopsies showed non-specific changes of atrophy with subacute or chronic inflammation. Four patients were malnourished and anaemic and three were infested with hookworm. The condition did not respond to antibiotics. Healing was obtained in one patient with systemic steroids. The relationship of this disorder to erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp and to pyoderma gangrenosum of atypical distribution is discussed.

Objective assessment of seborrhea of the scalp has seldom been reported in the literature. We have used a variant of the method described by Saint-Léger and Lévêque to measure the sebum excretion rate in normal scalp, male pattern alopecia, pityriasis amiantacea, pityriasis capitis and alopecia areata. The sebum excretion rate was significantly increased in male pattern alopecia, significantly decreased in pityriasis amiantacea and showed a trend towards reduction in alopecia areata. Pityriasis capitis was not associated with changes in the excretion of sebum.
