The increasing data rate has become a major issue confronting next-generation intracortical brain-machine interfaces (iBMIs). The scaling number of recording sites requires complex analog wiring and lead to huge digitization power consumption. Compressive event-based neural frontends have been used in high-density neural implants to support the simultaneous recording of more channels. Event-based frontends (EBF) convert recorded signals into asynchronous digital events via delta modulation and can inherently achieve considerable compression. But EBFs are prone to false events that do not corre

This study develops an efficient and accurate method for segmenting complex swallowing events in patients with dysphagia. We propose CFSCNet, a novel model that integrates multimodal signals-audio, nasal airflow, and triaxial accelerometry-to enhance swallowing event segmentation. The model employs a dual-stream architecture to capture swallowing information across varying durations and utilizes an exponential moving average-based cost-sensitive weighting method to address data imbalance. To further improve the stability of predictions for clinical applications, a Swallowing State Machine-Driv

Electroencephalography is the most commonly used diagnostic tool for epilepsy. However, interpreting electroencephalograms (EEGs) requires expertise that is not widely available. Advances in digital technology and wearables have enabled large-scale EEG recording, generating vast amounts of data that cannot be managed through traditional visual interpretation by experts. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to augment human expertise and reduce workloads. The application of artificial neural networks in analysing clinical EEG recordings has led to major breakthroughs, bringing AI-base

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that occurs as a result of a decrease in the chemical called dopamine in the brain. There is no definitive treatment for PD, but some medications used to control symptoms in the early stages have a critical effect on the progression of the disease. Approximately 90% of patients with PD have vocal problems, and although voice disorders seen in the early stages are not apparent in the patient's speech, they can be detected by acoustic analysis. In this study, a decision support system was proposed for the diagnosis of PD utilizing the feat

Cardiac arrhythmias are major global health concern and their early detection is critical for diagnosis. This study comprehensively evaluates the effectiveness of CNNs and LSTMs for the classification of cardiac arrhythmias, considering three PhysioNet datasets. ECG records are segmented to accommodate around ∼10s of ECG data. Followed by transformation to scalograms using DWT for training VGG-16; and WTS for feature extraction and dimensionality reduction for training LSTM network. VGG-16 achieved 96.44% test accuracy while LSTM achieved 92%. Results also highlight the effectiveness of VGG-16

With cardiovascular diseases accounting for all other causes of mortality worldwide, an increasing proportion of individuals are being treated for them. To identify the cardiac issue, medical practitioners have to examine electrocardiogram (ECG) data. Moreover, diagnosis is a process that healthcare professionals find simple vulnerable to mistakes. Modern deep learning systems have tackled the difficult choreography of independently identifying heart disease using ECGs. The present study is in line with the increasing frequency of cardiovascular disease, a major cause of death and sickness glo

This paper introduces a novel Compressive Sensing (CS)-based cryptosystem tailored for the secure and efficient transmission of Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals in Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) environments. It leverages the inherent sparsity of ECG signals in the wavelet domain and ensures both data privacy and integrity during transmission through a simple but effective additional encryption stage. We have evaluated the performance of four distinct sensing matrices and three reconstruction algorithms across multiple wavelet families. Through extensive simulations using the MIT-BIH Arrhyth

Sleep spindles, characteristic waveforms in stage 2 of non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep on EEG, are linked to a multitude of diseases. Although numerous sleep spindle detection methods exist, several challenges persist: 1)How to effectively utilize spindle properties, such as their duration and prominence in EEG signals? 2)How to capture spindles without threshold settings? 3)How to make spindle detection resemble object detection without converting signals into images? To address these challenges, we introduce SpindleX, a novel end-to-end sleep spindle detection algorithm. It comprises fou

Detection and classification of cardiovascular diseases are crucial for early diagnosis and prediction of heart-related conditions. Existing methods rely on either electrocardiogram or phonocardiogram signals, resulting in higher false positive rates. Solely ECG misses the murmurs associated with the narrowing of the blood vessels caused by abnormalities in the heart. Similarly, considering only PCG will miss the subtle changes in the electrical activity of the heart that leads to incomplete evaluation. The implementation of a multi-class heart disease classification model utilizing both ECG a

Electrocardiogram (ECG) delineation is essential to the identification of abnormal cardiac status, especially when ECG signals are remotely monitored with wearable devices. The complexity and diversity of cardiac conditions generate numerous pathological ECG patterns, not only requiring the recognition of normal ECG but also addressing an extensive range of abnormal ECG patterns, posing a challenging task. Therefore, we propose an abnormal recognition-assisted network to integrate supplementary information on diverse ECG patterns. Simultaneously, we design an onset-offset aware loss to enhance

The classification of limb movements can provide with control commands in non-invasive brain-computer interface. Previous studies on the classification of limb movements have focused on the classification of left/right limbs; however, the classification of different types of upper limb movements has often been ignored despite that it provides more active-evoked control commands in the brain-computer interface. Nevertheless, few machine learning method can be used as the state-of-the-art method in the multi-class classification of limb movements. This work focuses on the multi-class classificat

In the classical image processing pipeline, demosaicing and denoising are separated steps that may interfere with each other. Joint demosaicing and denoising utilizes the shared image prior information to guide the image recovery process. It is expected to have better performance by the joint optimization of the two problems. Besides, learning recovered images from burst (continuous exposure images) can further improve image details. This article proposes a two-stage convolutional neural network model for joint demosaicing and denoising of burst Bayer images. The proposed CNN model consists of

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have achieved significant success in controlling external devices through the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal processing. BCI-based Motor Imagery (MI) system bridges brain and external devices as communication tools to control, for example, wheelchair for people with disabilities, robotic control, and exoskeleton control. This success largely depends on the machine learning (ML) approaches like deep learning (DL) models. DL algorithms provide effective and powerful models to analyze compact and complex EEG data optimally for MI-BCI applications. DL models wit

This paper presents a method of using feature searching algorithm based on maximal divergence value to get the optimized feature combinations at different dimensions from feature space. Feature space is obtained through wavelet transform on ECG beat. Then the feature vector is determined by analyzing the changes of divergence value of those optimized feature combinations along with the dimensions. BP artificial neural network is trained by the feature vector and four types of ECG beats(normal beat, left bundle branch block beat, right bundle branch block beat and paced beat) obtained from MIT-

The basic parameters of the spectrogram, the Choi-Williams, and the Bessel distributions are adjusted to provide the best time-frequency representations (TFRs) of the simulated murmur signals of mitral stenosis, mitral regurgitation, aortic stenosis, aortic regurgitation, and of two musical murmurs. The initial adjustment of the parameters of each TFR technique is performed by computing and minimising the relative averaged absolute error between the frequency contours at -3 dB and -10 dB of each TFR of the simulated murmurs and those of the theoretical distribution of the same signals. Until today, geometrical descriptors of intracranial aneurysms are largely used for diagnosis and treatment selection. Nevertheless, relatively little work has been devoted to automatize these measurements. In this work we propose a methodology for the automated isolation and quantification from vascular segmentation. The proposed methodology is based on skeleton topology analysis, geometrical analysis and deformable models to isolate, automatically, the aneurysm dome as well as its geometrical characteristics. The accuracy of this methodology when compared to manually isolated aneurysms is ev

As Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) ecosystems expand, life-critical devices become increasingly vulnerable to microarchitectural leakage attacks that enable adversaries to evade conventional digital authentication mechanisms. Exploiting timing and cache leakage allows adversaries to extract credentials and issue cryptographically valid commands with physiologically unsafe parameters, a systemic weakness we define as the verified attacker problem. This work introduces a dual-layer physiological and side-channel defense architecture that maintains patient safety even under credential compromis

The frequency-domain properties of biomedical signals offer valuable insights into health and functioning of underlying physiological systems. The power spectrum, which characterizes these properties, is often summarized by partitioning frequencies into standard bands and averaging power within bands. These summary measures are regularly used for analysis in practice, but are not guaranteed to optimally retain differences in power spectra across signals from different participants. We propose a data-adaptive method for identifying frequency band summary measures that preserve spectral variabil

Auditory neurofeedback (ANF) utilizes sound to map brain activity in real-time, guiding individuals to self-regulate neural states via operant conditioning. Compared to visual neurofeedback, ANF offers distinct advantages in millisecond-level response speed and non-visual dependency, significantly enhancing ecological validity and reducing visual fatigue. This paper reviews the physiological basis, signal processing workflows, and three typical experimental paradigms of ANF: threshold regulation, parameter modulation, and state-dependent triggering. Furthermore, it discusses current applicatio
