Self-assembly of an in silico designed dipeptide derivative to obtain photo-responsive vesicles.

Vesicle structures assembled from short peptides are excellent carriers for drug delivery. Modifying peptides with photo-responsive azobenzene (azo) moieties is expected to generate smart vesicles that could release cargos under stimulation of ultraviolet (UV) or visible (vis) light irradiation. The modified azo groups could dramatically affect delicate intermolecular interactions, thereby perturbing the self-assembly pathways of peptides. However, through well molecular design and screening, it should be possible to manipulate the self-assembly to obtain such smart vesicle structures. Coarse-

Continuous fabrication of Janus liquid crystal elastomer fibers with programmable actuation.

Smart fibers, particularly liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) fibers, are pivotal in soft robotics and adaptive textiles. However, existing fabrication methods are limited to simple monolithic structures, hindering the realization of complex actuation behaviors. To overcome this limitation, we develop a continuous extrusion platform for producing Janus LCE fibers that emulate asymmetric biological structures, such as plant tendrils, thereby enabling sophisticated actuation. This approach seamlessly integrates an LCE network with a dynamic covalent polymer network, allowing programmable on-demand l

Unobtrusive Wearable System for Load Vertical Location Estimation.

Low back pain (LBP) is a leading musculoskeletal disorder, and manual material lifting is proven to be a major cause of LBP. However, current solutions for monitoring a major LBP risk factor - load vertical location (LVL), are not user-friendly or accurate, which makes them impractical for real-world applications. To address these problems, a user-friendly wearable system was proposed in this study to realize an accurate measurement of LVL over time. The wearable system consists of a pair of smart insoles, each integrated with an insole-shaped pressure sensor array and an Inertial Measurement

Fano-resonant hybrid Metasurface for Carbon Dioxide sensing at telecommunication wavelengths.

The development of compact and selective carbon dioxide (CO₂) sensors is in significant demand due to the severe effect of CO₂ on global warming and human health. Introducing a functional smart material for CO2 adsorption represents an excellent solution for miniaturized selective devices. However, most of these devices operate beyond the telecommunication wavelengths, limiting their applicability for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). In this work, we report a hybrid metasurface - polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) design for a highly selective and sensitive optical sensor. We leverage the
