Inhibition of Nitric Oxide Synthesis Prevents the Effects of Intermittent Social Defeat on Cocaine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference in Male Mice.

We have previously observed that mice exposed to social defeat stress are more sensitive to cocaine in the conditioned place preference (CPP) paradigm. In this context, it has been suggested that the nitric oxide (NO) pathway plays a role in the effects of stress. The present study evaluates the role of a neuronal NO synthase (nNOS) inhibitor (7-nitroindazole, 7-NI) in the short- and long-term behavioural effects of intermittent social defeat (ISD). Four groups of mice were employed for the study: a control group and three stressed groups, one treated with vehicle and two treated with 7-NI (7.

The association between perceived interpersonal social support and physical and mental health: results from the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Low social support has been associated with several disorders. We test the relationship between perceived interpersonal social support (ISS) and aspects of mental and physical health. METHODS: We used data from National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions in which 34,653 individuals aged 20-99 years were interviewed twice (2001-02 and 2004-05), with the second interview including the interpersonal support evaluation list. The association of perceived ISS with lifetime DSM-IV psychopathology and physical health from the past 12 months was investigated. We also

Social Vulnerability and the Relationship Between Maternal Caregiver Condition Management Ability and Transition Readiness in Young Adult Survivors of Childhood Brain Tumors.

PURPOSE: To utilize the social-ecological model of adolescent and young adult readiness to transition to understand the interplay of social determinants of health with condition management ability (CMA) of caregivers of young adult survivors of childhood brain tumors (YAS). METHODS: Maternal caregivers (N = 53) of 18- to 29-year-old YAS ≥2 years off-treatment living at home were screened into a problem-solving intervention randomized trial based on their risk of poorer CMA. They completed the Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ) and rated YAS cognitive late effect severity pri

Referent selection in children with Autism Spectrum Condition and intellectual disabilities: Do social cues affect word-to-object or word-to-location mappings?

BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence regarding whether children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and intellectual disabilities (ID) follow social pragmatic cues such as a speaker's eye gaze or pointing towards a novel object to assist mapping a new word onto a new object (e.g. fast mapping). AIMS: We test fast mapping from a speaker's gaze and pointing towards objects in children with ASC and ID with varying chronological and receptive language ages compared with receptive language matched groups of typically developing (TD) children. METHODS AND PROCEDURE: Across eight trials, a sp

"This Isn't Just about Things, It's about People and Their Future": A Qualitative Analysis of the Working Conditions and Strains of Social Workers in Refugee and Homeless Aid.

Large parts of Europe have been affected by an influx of refugees and increasing homelessness in recent years. Social workers provide care services for refugees and homeless people, but little is known about their working conditions. The aim of this study was to examine their job demands, resources and health strains. 26 semi-structured interviews were conducted with social workers in refugee and homeless aid in Hamburg and Berlin between October and December 2017. The interviews were analysed following Mayring's qualitative content analysis. Additionally, the job demands and resources of soci

Can you be a peer if you don't share the same health or social conditions? A qualitative study on peer integration in a primary care setting.

BACKGROUND: Peer support has been extensively studied in specific areas of community-based primary care such as mental health, substance use, HIV, homelessness, and Indigenous health. These programs are often built on the assumption that peers must share similar social identities or lived experiences of disease to be effective. However, it remains unclear how peers can be integrated in general primary care setting that serves people with a diversity of health conditions and social backgrounds. METHODS: A participatory qualitative study was conducted between 2020 and 2022 to explore the feasib

Social determinants of health and long-term conditions in people of Black African and Black Caribbean ethnicity living with HIV in London: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are disproportionately impacted by socioeconomic deprivation and are at increased risk of developing other long-term conditions (LTCs). These illnesses require transformative action to tackle the adverse effects on their health. Data on lived experiences of LTCs among people living with HIV of Black African and Black Caribbean ethnicities are sparse, and how people with LTCs are impacted by social determinants of health (SDoH). METHODS: Through a phenomenological study design this qualitative study, conducted in 2022, comprised

A Survey of Health Disparities, Social Determinants of Health, and Converging Morbidities in a County Jail: A Cultural-Ecological Assessment of Health Conditions in Jail Populations.

The environmental health status of jail populations in the United States constitutes a significant public health threat for prisoners and the general population. The ecology of jails creates a dynamic condition in relation to general population health due to the concentrated potential exposure to infectious diseases, difficult access to treatment for chronic health conditions, interruption in continuity of care for serious behavioral health conditions, as well as on-going issues for the prevention and treatment of substance abuse disorders. This paper reports on elements of a cross-sectional s

Associations of depressive symptoms, social engagement and support, and lifestyle behaviors among non-Hispanic black and Hispanic men with chronic conditions in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Self-management of depressive symptoms is influenced by co-morbidity, social support, and health-related behaviors. Men are less likely to discuss depressive moods and seek healthcare. This study examines factors associated with depressive symptoms among non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic men ages ≥40 years with ≥1 chronic condition in the U. S. METHODS: Data from 1,907 non-Hispanic Black (n = 1,117) and Hispanic (n = 790) males with chronic conditions were analyzed using logistic regression to assess depressive symptoms, identified as a Patient Health Questionnaire-2 score ≥3. Behavioural traits related with resilience or vulnerability to the development of cocaine-induced conditioned place preference after exposure of female mice to vicarious social defeat.

Exposure to stress induced by intermittent repeated social defeat (IRSD) increases vulnerability to the development of cocaine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) among male mice; however, some defeated mice are resilient to these effects of stress. In the present study we evaluated the effects of vicarious IRSD (VIRSD) in female mice and explored behavioural traits that are potentially predictive of resilience. C57BL/6 female mice (n = 28) were exposed to VIRSD, which consisted of the animals witnessing a short experience of social defeat by a male mouse on postnatal day (PND) 47, 50,

Changes in Activity of Cysteine Cathepsins B and L in Brain Structures of Mice with Aggressive and Depressive-Like Behavior Formed under Conditions of Social Stress.

We studied activity of lysosomal cysteine proteases, cathepsins B and L, in brain structures (frontal cortex, caudate nucleus, hippocampus, and hypothalamus) of C57Bl/6J mice with aggressive and depressive-like behavior formed under conditions of chronic social stress (repeated experience of victories and defeats within 20 days). Mice with depressive-like behavior showed increased activity of cathepsin В in the hypothalamus and nucleus caudatus and increased activity of cathepsin L in the hippocampus compared to control animals not subjected to agonistic confrontations. In mice with aggressive

Spatial characteristics of non-communicable diseases and their associations to social conditions in a large urban cohort in Germany-Results from the Hamburg City Health Study.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for many deaths. They are associated with several modifiable and metabolic risk factors and are therefore prone to significant regional variations on different scales. However, only few intra-urban studies examined spatial variation in NCDs and its association with social circumstances, especially in Germany. Thus, the present study aimed to identify associations of personal risk factors and local social conditions with NCDs in a large German city. METHODS: This study is based on a population-based cohort of the Hamburg City Health

Nicotine-conditioned place preference, reversal learning and social interaction in MK-801-induced schizophrenia model: Effects of post-weaning enriched environment.

Based on the clinical observations of severe cognitive deficits in schizophrenia patients and the relationship between environmental parameters and the severity of schizophrenia symptoms, the present study investigated these parameters in an dizocilpine (MK-801)-induced schizophrenia model in rats. In addition to, it evaluated whether a post-weaning enriched environment (EE) would affect the nicotine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) and the motor and cognitive deficits caused by MK-801 treatment. Male Wistar rat pups were injected peritoneally with MK-801 (1 mg/kg) on a daily basis b

Impacts of prolonged different social (equality and inequality) conditions on spatial learning and memory deficits, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder-like behaviors in male rats.

INTRODUCTION: Observing others' suffering and being observed during stress may differentially influence behavioral patterns and brain functions such as learning, memory, and mood. This study investigated the effects of prolonged social equality and inequality on spatial learning and memory deficits, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)-like behaviors in rats. METHODS: Male rats were randomly divided into six groups: control (Co), pseudo-observer (Pse-Ob), pseudo-demonstrator (Pse-De), observer (Ob), demonstrator (De), and co-demonstrator (Co-De). All groups except the control underw

The drivers of West Nile virus human illness in the Chicago, Illinois, USA area: Fine scale dynamic effects of weather, mosquito infection, social, and biological conditions.

West Nile virus (WNV) has consistently been reported to be associated with human cases of illness in the region near Chicago, Illinois. However, the number of reported cases of human illness varies across years, with intermittent outbreaks. Several dynamic factors, including temperature, rainfall, and infection status of vector mosquito populations, are responsible for much of these observed variations. However, local landscape structure and human demographic characteristics also play a key role. The geographic and temporal scales used to analyze such complex data affect the observed associati
