Influence of body position during Heimlich maneuver to relieve supralaryngeal obstruction: a manikin study.

UNLABELLED: To study the most effective body position for Heimlich maneuver. METHODS: A choking simulation manikin was connected to a laryngeal model of a child or an adult, and a differential pressure transducer recorded the airway pressure and waveform during the maneuver. A konjac jelly was placed on the larynx to mimic complete supralaryngeal obstruction. The maneuver (five successive compressions) was carried out six times each in standing, prone, and supine positions. For cases of children, we added a supine position with a pillow under the back. RESULTS: In the adult model, airway obs

Adolescent Feet Are Not Small Adult Feet.

BACKGROUND: Many arch structure classification methods exist, but arch structure may be influenced by factors such as age and physical activity. It is unknown if previous arch structure classifications from adult populations are appropriate for adolescents. The purpose of our study was to compare arch structure classifications between adolescent-specific and previously published classification systems. METHODS: We enrolled 141 uninjured adolescents who participated in long-distance running activities. We measured arch height index (AHI) for both feet in seated and standing positions and class

Center of pressure palindromes reveals a wobbling standing balance in scoliotic girls.

BACKGROUND: This study characterized the center of pressure planar displacement by palindromic strings. The objective is to test if the center of pressure pathway of able-bodied girls and those with a moderate and severe scoliosis displayed similar palindromic tendencies. METHODS: The center of pressure excursions of 21 able-bodied girls were compared to 14 girls with a moderate scoliosis and 14 girls with severe one. Each girl was asked to stand upright on a force platform for 64 s. A crisscross grid of nine areas was centered around the mean center of pressure position (G) to define three o

Is it getting hot in here? The effects of VR headset microclimate temperature on perceived thermal discomfort, VR sickness, and skin temperature.

Thermal discomfort is a driver of negative user experiences with modern VR headsets since they are similar to head-worn gaming computers. Here, we examined the effect of microclimate temperature (MCT; i.e., the air between headset and user) and the effect of standing and seated use on thermal discomfort for a goggle style headset. Users played VR games across three 48-min sessions with different thermal profiles ranging between 28°-43 °C. Perceived thermal and weight discomfort were rated by participants every 12-min. Thermal, but not weight comfort declined during the study period as MCT incr

The Impact of Radiographic Lower Limb-Spinal Length Proportion on Whole-Body Sagittal Alignment.

STUDY DESIGN: A radiographic comparative study. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of radiographic lower limb-spinal length proportion on sagittal radiographic parameters. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although lordotic realignment of the lumbar spine is a well-established surgical strategy, its ideal target has not been fully understood. The widely used pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis discrepancy (PI-LL) method to guide lordotic restoration of the lumber spine in the standing posture, may be further refined using the novel, radiographic lower limb-spinal length proportion parameter in s

Analysis of Postural Instability in the Upright Position on Narrow Platforms and the Interactions with Postural Constraints.

BACKGROUND: Loss of balance is a considerable risk factor for workers while using ladders, because they are required to maintain static postural balance on platforms of a restricted size. This study observed center of mass (CoM) and center of pressure (CoP) behaviors and evaluated the effects of the platform depth (anterior-posterior length) and working postures. METHODS: Eleven male participants stood on four platforms with depths ranging from 6 to 15 cm and maintained their positions for 60 s while performing or not performing other tasks (object holding, upward viewing, or both simultaneou

Chronic impairments of static postural stability associated with history of concussion.

Postural stability deficits are commonly observed in cases of concussion. However, the objective duration in which impairments of standing postural stability remain following a concussion is often inconclusive. The present study was conducted to determine if prior history of concussion is associated with deficits in postural stability beyond the clinical determination of recovery. It was hypothesized that concussion history would be associated with decreases in static stability compared to individuals that have never sustained a concussion. Fifty-four healthy adults were recruited based on whe

Acute cognitive effects of interruptions to prolonged sitting with brief standing or physical activity breaks: a systematic review and three-level meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged sitting is strongly associated with impaired cognitive function. Although traditional exercise interventions have been shown to improve cognitive outcomes, their implementation is often limited by practical constraints. In contrast, introducing interruptions to prolonged sitting with brief bouts of standing or physical activity has emerged as a more feasible alternative. However, previous research has been dominated by qualitative reviews. Moreover, some quantitative studies have not adequately addressed effect-size dependency arising from multiple outcomes and time point

Force sensor reduced measurement error compared with verbal command during sit-to-stand assessment of cerebral autoregulation.

Current methods estimate the time delay (TD) before the onset of dynamic cerebral autoregulation (dCA) from verbal command to stand. A force sensor used during a sit-to-stand dCA measure provides an objective moment an individual stands (arise-and-off, AO). We hypothesized that the detection of AO would improve the accuracy of TD compared with estimation. We measured middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAv) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) for 60 s sitting followed by 2-min standing, three times separated by 20 min. TD was calculated as the time from: (1) verbal command and (2) AO, until a

Static force and tipover stability analysis of an assistive device for paraplegics.

Stability plays a vital role in any robotic system. Its significance increases in systems related to health and medicine. For rehabilitation devices meant for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) patients, stability is crucial and key element in ensuring patient safety and the usefulness of the devices. In this study, kinematics, force analysis, and the static tip-over stability of a device for rehabilitation of paraplegic patients is discussed. Kinematics modeling and static force analysis provide critical information about position and loading at different points on the device. Force-Angle Stability Cri

Reference Values and Accuracy-Influencing Factors for Knee Joint-Position Sense Assessments: A Cross-Sectional Study.

This study aimed to contribute to the existing literature regarding reference values for knee joint-position sense assessments in healthy-young individuals, and to investigate which protocol- and individual-related factors produce higher accuracy. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 62 participants. Joint-position sense was assessed to an extreme (20°) and an intermediate (45°) target angle in three test positions, and expressed in absolute angular errors. In sitting/prone positions, concentric and eccentric repositionings were performed. Standing tests involved unilateral and bilateral

Automated non-contact measurement of the spine curvature at the sagittal plane using a deep neural network.

BACKGROUND: Non-radiographical techniques have been suggested to measure the spine curvature at the sagittal plane. However, a neural network has not been used to measure the curvature. METHODS: A single video camera captured images of a standing posture at the sagittal plane from twenty healthy males. Six marker positions along the spine's contour in each image were identified for measuring inclination, thoracic kyphosis, and lumbar lordosis angles. We estimated three inflection points around the neck, hip, and between the neck and hip, followed by identifying two adjacent marker positions p
