Clinical and bacteriological effects of therapy of urinary tract infection in primary health care: relation to in vitro sensitivity testing.

17 primary health care (PHC) centres participated in a 1-month evaluation of a county urinary tract infection (UTI) management program. A total of 302 patients contributing 355 episodes, dominated by female (93%), lower symptomatic (75%) and Escherichia coli (74%) episodes were studied. In therapeutic failure gram-negative bacteria other than E. coli showed an increased prevalence whereas Staphylococcus saprophyticus was not found. The general pattern of drug resistance was little influenced by UTI history and the mean pretherapy prevalence of resistance to the 7 antibacterial agents studied w

Protocol for diagnosis of urinary tract infection: reconsidering the criterion for significant bacteriuria.

The traditional criterion of 10(5) colony-forming units (CFU) per milliliter of urine to diagnose urinary tract infection was based on studies of pregnant and nonpregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria or acute pyelonephritis. Recent studies of symptomatic women revealed that urine cultures in approximately one third of those with confirmed urinary tract infections grew only 10(2) to 10(4) CFU/mL. The major causes of acute dysuria among such women are urinary tract infection, sexually transmitted disease, and vaginitis. In most instances, it is possible to make the diagnosis based on clin

Assessment of Bacterial Isolates from the Urine Specimens of Urinary Tract Infected Patient.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) maintained a serious public health concern, as did the growth in antibiotic resistance both between uropathogenic microorganisms. A regular assessment of the microbiological agents that cause UTIs, as well as their antimicrobial resistance, is essential for a tailored empirical antibiotic response. Knowing the variables that cause UTIs can help you intervene quickly and simply to get the condition under control. The most common infecting species in acute infection is Escherichia coli (E. coli). To strengthen infection control strategies, it is necessary to know

Characterization of gepotidacin activity, including in vitro kill kinetics, checkerboard, and PAE/SME testing against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

UNLABELLED: Gepotidacin is a novel, first-in-class triazaacenaphthylene antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA replication through a distinct binding site and unique mechanism of action that provides well-balanced inhibition of two different type II topoisomerase enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) for most pathogens. Gepotidacin was recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTI) and by the FDA for uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea. Overview and resistance profiles of isolated pathogens in women with uncomplicated urinary tract infection in primary care.

OBJECTIVE: In primary care, urinary tract infections (UTIs) are typically treated empirically, based on the likelihood of specific pathogens and their susceptibility profiles. The goal of this study was to reassess empirical treatment guidelines by comparing he current distribution and susceptibility of uropathogens. METHOD: Distribution and susceptibility were analyzed and compared with data from three previous surveys conducted in Belgium over the past 25 years. Between August 2020 and February 2022, 137 general practitioners (GPs) collected midstream urine samples from adult female patient

Review of Association between Urinary Tract Infections and Immunosuppressive Drugs after Heart Transplantation.

Management of infections in heart transplant recipients is complex and crucial. In this population, there is a need for a better understanding of immunosuppressive trough levels (C0), infectious complications, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). The purpose of this review was to understand the association between immunosuppressive trough levels and UTIs after heart transplantation. A review of scientific literature (n= 100) was conducted based on the topic of interest by searching PUBMED.Gov (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/), Web of Science, and Scopus. The analysis of bacterial pulmonary in

Effects of surface sterilization of fertile eggs on the yolk microbiota during the chicken embryo development.

Surface sterilization of the fertile eggs is a common process for commercial broiler breeding to avoid pathogenic bacterial infections before incubation. However, it is also possible to remove the beneficial microbes that might contribute to the development of chicken embryos. Thus, we established a model to mimic surface sterilization in the laboratory by rubbing fertile eggs with 70% ethanol and investigated the effect of eggshell surface sterilization on the yolk microbiota and its potential role in chicken (Gallus gallus) embryo development. In total, 460 Ross 308 fertile eggs were randoml

Exposure to cuticular bacteria can alter host behavior in a funnel-weaving spider.

Contact with environmental microbes are arguably the most common species interaction in which any animal participates. Studies have noted diverse relationships between hosts and resident microbes, which can have strong consequences for host development, physiology, and behavior. Many of these studies focus specifically on pathogens or beneficial microbes, while the benign microbes, of which the majority of bacteria could be described, are often ignored. Here, we explore the nature of the relationships between the grass spider Agelenopsis pennsylvanica and bacteria collected from their cuticles

Uropathogen distribution and antimicrobial susceptibility in uncomplicated cystitis in Belgium, a high antibiotics prescribing country: 20-year surveillance.

Treatment of cystitis in primary care is usually empirical, guided by the prior probability of causal pathogens and their susceptibility. To re-evaluate empirical treatment guidelines, the actual distribution and susceptibility of uropathogens was examined and compared with two previous surveys in Belgium over the past 20 years. Because of the alarming increase in carriage of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)- and carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli, this specific resistance was explored. From May 2014 to December 2015, 120 general practitioners collected midstream urine specimens from

"Nail Disease", an emerging syndrome in the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas cultivated in the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico: the challenge of determining its causal agent(s) and the importance of early warning.

In 2024, aquaculture producers reported unprecedented cases of shell malformations and mortality in Pacific oysters (Magallana gigas) in Baja California Peninsula, Mexico. Due to the shell malformations, they named this condition "nail disease." Sixty oysters from the main affected location were used for shell, bacteriological, fungal, and histopathological analysis. Shell malformations may reach 90% of the surface. Bacteriological identification based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the presence of Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Flagellimonas marinaquae. Shell decalcification exposed o

Thermoresponsive Liposomes for Photo-Triggered Release of Hypericin Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complex for Efficient Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy.

Antimicrobial strategies with high efficacy against bacterial infections are urgently needed. The development of effective therapies to control bacterial infections is still a challenge. Herein, near-infrared (NIR)-activated thermosensitive liposomes (TSL) were loaded with the NIR-dye 1,1-dioctadecyl-3,3,3,3-tetramethylindotricarbocyanine iodide (DiR) and the water-soluble hypericin (Hyp) β-cyclodextrin inclusion complex (Hyp-βCD). DiR and Hyp-βCD loaded thermosensitive liposomes (DHβCD-TSL) are functionalized for photothermal triggered release and synergistic photodynamic therapy to eliminate

Urease, Gastric Bacteria and Gastritis.

Urease is an enzyme produced by diverse bacterial species including normal flora, non pathogens, and pathogens such as Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Klebsiella pneumonia, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae Helicobacter spp and Helicobacter pylori. Urease is central in Helicobacter pylori metabolism and virulence, important for colonization in the gastric mucosa. Urease catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea to ammonia and carbamate. This ammonia product can be examined by Urease biopsy test and Urea breath test such as 14C-Urea Breath Test or 13C-Urea Breath Test.Previousl

Risk factors for recurrent cystitis following acute cystitis in female patients.

We conducted a retrospective analysis of acute cystitis (AC) patients to evaluate the risk factors of recurrent cystitis (RC) patients following AC. The clinical records of 254 subjects with a confirmed diagnosis of AC and 90 healthy subjects who visited the Health Promotion Center between 2008 and 2012 were reviewed. A patient was diagnosed with RC if she was treated for three or more symptomatic episodes of cystitis over a 12-month period. Results were analyzed according to three groups: normal control (group A, n = 90), AC (group B, n = 121), and RC (group C, n = 133). Women in the cystitis

Evolution of bacterial susceptibility pattern of Escherichia coli in uncomplicated urinary tract infections in a country with high antibiotic consumption: a comparison of two surveys with a 10 year interval.

OBJECTIVES: For the empirical treatment of cystitis, clinicians are often guided by susceptibility data taken from urinary samples that sent to regional microbiological laboratories, which are not representatives for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). To offer adequate recommendations, the distribution and susceptibility pattern of uropathogens in uncomplicated UTIs in women were compared with those obtained 10 years ago in our uropathogen surveillance in a primary healthcare setting. METHODS: Sixty-six general practitioners in the region of the city of Ghent were asked to inocula
