Seal whisker-inspired fully printed MEMS flow sensor via micron-scale soft material additive manufacturing.

Seals are renowned for their exceptional ability to hunt, a capability attributed to the uniquely evolved whisker morphology that suppresses vortex-induced vibrations and enables them to track hydrodynamic trails in the water. In this study, we present the first direct experimental comparison of replicated whisker geometries from harbor seals, gray seals, and sea lions, integrated into an artificial follicle-sinus complex flow sensor. A custom-formulated elastic resin was developed to address the limitations of current photocurable soft materials, enabling the fabrication of mechanically compl

Use of three-dimensional-printed models for preoperative planning in endoscopic endonasal surgery for tuberculum sellae meningioma: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculum sellae meningiomas (TSMs) are surgically demanding because of their proximity to the optic apparatus, anterior communicating artery complex, and supraclinoid carotid arteries. The expanded endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) is a viable alternative to transcranial surgery for selected midline lesions, but safe navigation of these neurovascular relationships requires detailed preoperative planning. Patient-specific three-dimensional (3D) printing is an established tool for anatomical simulation and rehearsal before skull base surgery (SBS). CASE DESCRIPTION: A 52-year-ol

PDMS-Based Device for Long-Term Imaging of Gut Peristalsis by Suppressing Tissue Drift in Chicken Embryos.

Gut peristalsis is essential for the propulsion of luminal contents in the mature gut. Recent studies have suggested that embryonic peristalsis functions as a morphogenetic signal that regulates gut development. For these studies, long-term time-lapse analyses with ex vivo culture must be powerful to understand the dynamics of gut peristalsis. However, a cultured gut specimen undergoes a physical drifting within the microscopic field of view caused by repetitive contractions, preventing long-term quantitative analysis. Here, we developed a simple and inexpensive platform for long-term imaging

In-house three-dimensional printing for surgical planning: learning curve from a case series of temporomandibular joint and related disorders.

Three-dimensional (3D) printed models can improve the understanding of the structural anatomic changes in cases of temporomandibular joint ankylosis and pseudoankylosis leading to closed jaw locking. Their use in pre-surgical planning and intraoperative guidance has been reported, contributing to the predictability and success of these surgery procedures, which can be quite complex, especially in small animal patients. The use and production of 3D tools and models remain challenging and are so far limited to institutions with high (economical and human) resources. This study aims to propose si

An affordable Three-Dimensional (3D) Printed Recording Chamber for Two-Electrode Voltage Clamp Electrophysiology.

Two electrode voltage-clamp (TEVC) electrophysiology in Xenopus oocytes is a common approach to studying the physiology and pharmacology of membrane transport proteins. Undergraduates may learn to use TEVC methodology in neuroscience or physiology courses and/or in faculty-mentored research experiences. Challenges with the methodology include the cost of commercially available recording chambers, especially when a lab needs multiple copies, and the additional time and expertise needed to use agar bridges and to stabilize solution flow and minimize noise from solution aspiration. Offering a low

3D printing of human ear pinna using cartilage specific ink.

Biofabrication of a complex structure such as ear pinna is not precise with currently available techniques. Auricular deformities (e.g. microtia) can cause physical, social as well as psychological impacts on a patient's wellbeing. Currently available surgical techniques and transplantation methods have many limitations that can be overcome with the help of 3D bioprinting technology. Printable bioink enriched with cartilage-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis was done by digesting goat ear pinna cartilage and polymerized by adding polyvinyl alcohol and gelatine. Rheological analysis

A novel method for fabricating nasoalveolar molding appliances for infants with cleft lip and palate using 3-dimensional workflow and clear aligners.

INTRODUCTION: Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) was introduced over 20 years ago as adjunctive therapy for the correction of cleft lip and palate. In the current study, we propose a new approach using a digital workflow and 3-dimensional printing to fabricate clear aligner NAM devices. METHODS: A polyvinyl siloxane (PVS) impression of an infant with a unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is acquired and poured, and the stone model is scanned with an intraoral scanner. The stereolithography file is digitized, and the alveolar segments are digitally segmented and moved to the desired final

Use of 3D Models in the Surgical Decision-Making Process in a Case of Double-Outlet Right Ventricle With Multiple Ventricular Septal Defects.

3D printing has recently become an affordable means of producing bespoke models and parts. This has now been extended to models produced from medical imaging, such as computed tomography (CT). Here we report the production of a selection of 3D models to compliment the available imaging data for a 12-month-old child with double-outlet right ventricle and two ventricular septal defects. The models were produced to assist with case management and surgical planning. We used both stereolithography and polyjet techniques to produce white rigid and flexible color models, respectively. The models were
