Prefrontal function in schizophrenia: confounds and controversies.

A wealth of clinical data indirectly implicate dysfunction of frontal cortex in schizophrenia, including negative symptoms, the pattern of neuropsychological deficits, and abnormal eye movements. Neuroimaging studies have provided direct evidence of frontal, particularly prefrontal, malfunction, but the results have been inconsistent and controversial. The burning question is whether prefrontal hypofunction is a pathophysiological characteristic of schizophrenia per se or an artifact of the imaging protocol. In studies of patients at rest, 'hypofrontality' has been an inconsistent finding, pro

Event-related potentials in alcoholic fathers and their sons.

ERPs were recorded during a simple color discrimination and a more difficult visual continuous performance task (CPT) from three father-son (n = 15) pair groups: recovering alcoholics with a family history of alcoholism and their sons (A+), nonalcoholics with a family history of alcoholism and their sons (NA+), and nonalcoholics with no family history of alcoholism and their sons (NA-). The sons, aged 8 to 12, had not begun drinking or using other drugs. Groups were matched on age, education and socioeconomic status. There were two principal findings. Compared to nonalcoholic groups, both A+ s

Marijuana carry-over effects on aircraft pilot performance.

This study finds evidence for 24-h carry-over effects of a moderate social dose of marijuana on a piloting task. In separate sessions, nine currently active pilots smoked one cigarette containing 20 mg of delta 9 THC and one Placebo cigarette. Using an aircraft simulator, pilots flew just before smoking, and 0.25, 4, 8, 24, and 48 h after smoking. Marijuana impaired performance at 0.25, 4, 8, and 24 h after smoking. While seven of the nine pilots showed some degree of impairment at 24 h after smoking, only one reported any awareness of the drug's effects. The results support our preliminary st

CNS reactions at 51 ATA on trimix and heliox and during decompression.

Two groups of divers (Group A and B) were compressed to 500 msw with trimix (n = 3) and heliox (n = 3). After 4 d at saturation depth Group A had a gas change to heliox. Both groups were followed with repeated neuropsychological and neurological tests during compression, at stable intermediate depths and at saturation depth. There were marked high pressure nervous syndrome effects during compression for both groups. Only tremor was inhibited by the nitrogen. In addition Group A was impaired due to nitrogen narcosis. During trimix and heliox saturation there was only some recovery in the EEG. G

Spontaneous cortical slow-potential shifts and choice reaction time performance.

EEGs from Fz, Cz and Pz locations (reference--right mastoid) were obtained from 36 adults. For experimental trials the Fz slow potentials (SP) were determined for a pretask interval of: a 3 sec baseline, followed by a 2.5 sec SP shift, in either negative (3.5 microV) or positive (1.5 microV) direction, and maintenance at this level for another 2.5 sec. When this criterion was met the stimuli for a choice RT task were presented (potential-related event, PRE), which required a button-press response with the right or left hand for differing stimulus configurations. During subsequent control sessi

Assessment of fine motor control in individuals with Parkinson's disease using force tracking with a secondary cognitive task.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) are typically assessed using clinical scales such as the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, but clinical scales are insensitive to subtle changes early in the disease process. The goal of this project was to use current sensing technology to develop a quantitative assessment tool to document fine motor deficits in PD based on the ability to control grip force output. The assessment was designed to challenge deficits commonly encountered as a result of PD, including dual-task performance of a motor task and a cognitive ta

The dominant and nondominant arms are specialized for stabilizing different features of task performance.

We have previously proposed a model of motor lateralization, in which the two arms are differentially specialized for complementary control processes. During aimed movements, the dominant arm shows advantages for coordinating intersegmental dynamics as required for specifying trajectory speed and direction, while the nondominant arm shows advantages in controlling limb impedance, as required for accurate final position control. We now directly test this model of lateralization by comparing performance of the two arms under two different tasks: one in which reaching movement is made from one fi

Quantifying the Cognitive Demand of Controlling a Prosthesis with a Secondary Detection Response Task.

Up to 44% of upper-limb amputees abandon their prosthesis due to difficulty with control. More intuitive control is needed, but innovation is difficult without a valid and reliable way to measure intuitiveness. Here, we validate a secondary detection-response task (DRT) as a method to objectively measure the cognitive load of using a prosthesis. The DRT is a simple, yet sensitive measure of cognitive resource allocation based on response rate and reaction time to vibratory stimuli. Participants completed a primary task involving moving objects with varying fragility over a barrier without brea

Patterns of Dual-Task Interference in Service Members With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Using the Portable Warrior Test of Tactical Agility.

INTRODUCTION: Return-to-duty assessment for service members (SM) following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) combining motor and cognitive skills in dual task (DT) scenarios may better approximate the demands of active duty service. The Portable Warrior Test of Tactical Agility (POWAR-TOTAL) is a valid mTBI assessment tool which incorporates DT assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six SM diagnosed with mTBI and 59 healthy control (HC) SM performed the POWAR-TOTAL. Group differences in relative DT effect were categorized based on performance trade-offs and prioritizations. A paired-sample

Upper extremity strain in caregivers during enteral tube feeding of semi-solid nutrients to children requiring constant medical care: a simulated experiment focusing on the impact of new injection devices compliant with Standard No. ISO 80369-3.

Objectives. Healthcare facilities provide semi-solid nutrients to children requiring enteral tube feeding. The introduction of a new injection device (NEW) with a different syringe-to-tube connector geometry from a pre-existing device (PRE) results in increased workload, and an increase in nurses developing hand pain is a concern. A simulated experiment was conducted to determine the impact on upper extremity strain due to the difference between NEW and PRE. Methods. Twelve nurses performed two injection tasks for one portion of semi-solid nutrients into a dummy gastrostomy using the NEW and P

The impact of task (un)certainty on repeated grip force production.

Many studies found that in physical tasks, reducing certainty regarding their endpoints hinders performance. However, the impact of reducing certainty regarding other aspects of physical tasks is unknown. Here we manipulated the certainty of the required effort on an unrelated, parallel task (i.e., off-task uncertainty) and examined how it impacts force production in two within-subject experiments (N = 79). In two sessions, subjects completed 20 repetitions composed of maximal forces using a gripper with their dominant hand. Between repetitions, participants applied either submaximal constant

Spontaneous Activity Patterns in Human Attention Networks Code for Hand Movements.

Recent evidence suggests that, in the absence of any task, spontaneous brain activity patterns and connectivity in the visual and motor cortex code for natural stimuli and actions, respectively. These "resting-state" activity patterns may underlie the maintenance and consolidation (replay) of information states coding for ecological stimuli and behaviors. In this study, we examine whether replay patterns occur in resting-state activity in association cortex grouped into high-order cognitive networks not directly processing sensory inputs or motor outputs. Fifteen participants (7 females) perfo

The impact of clinical result acquisition and interpretation on task performance during a simulated pediatric cardiac arrest: a multicentre observational study.

PURPOSE: The acquisition and interpretation of clinical results during resuscitations is common; however, this can delay critical clinical tasks, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. This study aims to determine the impact of clinical result acquisition and interpretation by the team leader on critical task completion during simulated pediatric cardiac arrest before and after team training. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis of video-recorded simulated resuscitation scenarios conducted during Teams4Kids (T4K) study (June 2011-January 2015); scenarios included cardiac arrest

Is the left/right judgment task performance altered in unilateral carpal tunnel syndrome: And associated with symptom severity?

BACKGROUND: Left/right judgment task performance (LRJT) is impaired in severe neuropathic pain conditions. However, comparison of LRJT performance in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) with a control group with similar cognitive functions has not been investigated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the LRJT performance of CTS patients with healthy controls and the unaffected side. METHODS: Seventy-five CTS patients with dominant, right-hand involvement and 75 control subjects were included in the study. The Recognize® tablet application was used for LRJT performance. Tac

Is decision-making influenced by interactions between extended wakefulness and weak emotional stressors? An experimental study.

In this study, we aimed to determine whether 21-hour continuous wakefulness decreases performance in the Iowa Gambling Task and examine the effect of the interaction between a weak emotional stressor and prolonged continuous wakefulness on the decision-making process, as measured by the Iowa Gambling Task. Approximately half of 38 healthy college students were in the sleep deprivation condition (they performed the task at 4:30 a.m.); the remainder were in the daytime condition (they performed the task during the day). The participants in each sleep condition were further divided into non-expos

Rodent mnemonic similarity task performance requires the prefrontal cortex.

Mnemonic similarity task performance, in which a known target stimulus must be distinguished from similar lures, is supported by the hippocampus and perirhinal cortex. Impairments on this task are known to manifest with advancing age. Interestingly, disrupting hippocampal activity leads to mnemonic discrimination impairments when lures are novel, but not when they are familiar. This observation suggests that other brain structures support discrimination abilities as stimuli are learned. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is critical for retrieval of remote events and executive functions, such as work

Intrinsic connectivity reveals functionally distinct cortico-hippocampal networks in the human brain.

Episodic memory depends on interactions between the hippocampus and interconnected neocortical regions. Here, using data-driven analyses of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, we identified the networks that interact with the hippocampus-the default mode network (DMN) and a "medial temporal network" (MTN) that included regions in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and precuneus. We observed that the MTN plays a critical role in connecting the visual network to the DMN and hippocampus. The DMN could be further divided into 3 subnetworks: a "posterior medial" (PM) subnet
