Marrow donor registration and cord blood banking are essential components of the infrastructure required for unrelated haemopoietic stem cell transplantations. We now have a new law to support and regulate the Marrow Donor Coordination Agency, Cord Blood Banks and the Haematopoietic Stem Cell Provision Support Organization. We also need to have a specific goal for bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell donor registration, a minimum cord blood bank size, and the demographic data to back the medical needs for unrelated haemopoietic stem cell transplantations. To improve bone marrow and perip

BACKGROUND: Donor corneas are normally obtained by whole globe enucleation-a procedure often refused by the bereaved. To increase the acceptance of cornea donation, we have exclusively obtained donor corneas by in situ excision since the end of 1994. There have been reports of increased endothelial damage and higher contamination rates. We report our experience in 1995 and 1996.
METHODS: The in situ excision was performed by staff trained in microsurgical techniques. Only donor corneas with negative end-storage cultures after at least 10 days and an endothelial cell count of more than 2500 ce

Several andrological diseases require surgical repair or reconstruction of tunica albuginea, which envelops the corpora cavernosa penis. Despite intense research efforts involving a variety of biological materials, such as skin, muscle aponeurosis, human dura mater, tunica vaginalis, and pericardium, engineered tunica albuginea suitable for graft use is yet to be obtained. The study investigates microsurgical tunica albuginea allotransplantation in an animal model with the purpose of creation of an organ-specific tissue bank to store penile tissue, from cadaveric donors and male-to-female tran

In the Corona pandemic, the importance of donor health for the supply of patients with high-quality transplants has once again become particularly apparent in the field of cornea donation. And there are further challenges ahead: Due to new operation methods such as lamellar techniques an earlier stage of disease can be treated hence patients are being operated at younger ages. At the same time, with demographic change, potential donors are getting older. Therefore, the demand for a high-quality transplant without pre-operations seems to be difficult to fulfil in the future. This is particularly

To develop a portable device for measuring the donor corneal transparency and validate its efficacy for corneal evaluation in the eye-banks and for research. The transparency device (TD) has a light source, a detachable system for corneal insertion and a base for light transmission. The probe detects the transmitted light which is measured by a lux-meter. A contact lens was set as 'control' to reduce the light scattering concern, an empty petri-plate as 'blank' and the cornea as 'sample'. Two experts and non-experts (masked) observed the corneas for subjective analysis which was then compared

PURPOSE: Donor corneas are processed in eye banks and used for transplantation as a standard routine. The maximum time limit post-mortem for harvesting donor tissue varies greatly between eye banks. This study aimed to examine the corneal epithelium for structural changes post-mortem.
METHODS: A total of 51 corneas harvested between 14 and 163 hours post-mortem were examined using scanning electron and light microscopy.
RESULTS: Cell loss occurred through desquamation of flat superficial cells during the first days. In corneas with a post-mortem time of more than 2-3 days, large superficial

BACKGROUND: Cornea guttata may not be recognized in the eye bank and recent studies have displayed that guttae are transplanted in about 15% of cases in varying severities. The purpose of this study was to establish semiquantitative criteria for the detection of cornea guttata in donor corneas in the eye bank.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, preoperative endothelial pictures of donor corneas were collected and classified according to the post-penetrating keratoplasty cornea guttata grade into three distinct groups: group 1 consists of healthy corneas with no guttae (guttata grade

As a consequence of the preference for homologous tissues, bone banks are the primary source of bone and tendon grafts. However, the bacterial, viral, and fungal contamination of these grafts remains a considerable challenge in bone banks and often results in high rates of graft discarding and infections in patients. This study intended to investigate bacterial contamination in 509 bone grafts harvested from 110 multiorgan donors. Specimen collection included bone and soft tissue retrieved from culture-swabbing as well as bone and capsule for histopathology. Microbiological, histopathological,

Amniotic membrane, the inner layer of the placenta, has biological properties (e.g. promotes epithelization, reduces fibrosis, secretes antimicrobial products and inhibits immune responses) which make it a useful option for several ophthalmologic procedures, especially those involving the ocular surface. Its use in eye surgery has been reported by other authors. To our knowledge, there is a lack of descriptive studies on surgical indications using amniotic membrane in Mexican population. Here we describe the eight years Amniotic Membrane Bank experience in Mexico, including a detailed protocol

The Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR) is a publicly funded company that is part of an international network that facilitates unrelated bone marrow transplantation. This role means that the ABMDR has access to a large biospecimen repository therefore making it a highly valuable research resource. Recognising the potential value of these biospecimens for research purposes, the ABMDR is in the process of determining whether, and how, to share its biospecimens with other biobanks. While this would undoubtedly be of value to the scientific community, and ultimately to the wider communit

BACKGROUND: The biological recovery of human skin allografts is the gold standard for preservation in Skin Banks. However, there is no worldwide consensus about specific allocation criteria for preserved human skin allografts with living cells. A report is presented on the results of 5 years of experience of using human skin allografts in burned patient in the Skin and Tissue Bank at the "Instituto Nacional de Rehabilitacion"
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The human skin allografts were obtained from multi-organ donors. processed and preserved at -80 °C for 12 months. Allocation criteria were performe

Bornaviruses, which chronically infect many species, can cause severe neurological diseases in some animal species; their association with human neuropsychiatric disorders is, however, debatable. The epidemiology of Borna disease virus (BDV), as for other members of the family Bornaviridae, is largely unknown, although evidence exists for a reservoir in small mammals, for example bank voles (Myodes glareolus). In addition to the current exogenous infections and despite the fact that bornaviruses have an RNA genome, bornavirus sequences integrated into the genomes of several vertebrates million

PURPOSE: To investigate stamp visibility and endothelial cell loss (ECL) after the application of an orientation mark to Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) grafts supported by an air bubble.
METHODS: Eighteen DMEK grafts were prepared at an eye bank using a technique where an orientation mark was applied to the stromal surface of a DMEK graft that was supported by a small air bubble placed at the edge of the 2 endothelial surfaces of the graft. Grafts were evaluated at 2 and 5 days for stamp visibility and at 5 days with calcein-AM staining for ECL. Nine grafts underwent cross-

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation from deceased or living human donors has been limited by donor availability as opposed to the increasing demand, by the risks of allograft loss rejection and immunosuppressive therapy toxicity and by limitations of organ preservation protocols, which is essential to organise staff and facilities, transport organs, and perform necessary laboratory tests. However, the cryopreservation of composite tissues poses technical challenges beyond those seen in the preservation of single tissue types or organs.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to establish a pro

Cadaver bone for spinal fusion operations is as safe as autografts. The author's 35 years' experience using cadaver bone for interbody spinal fusion operations has led to the development of a simplified bone bank method. Unsterile bone removed from young, fresh cadavers is cut into appropriate sizes and shapes, washed clean, packaged and sterilized with ethylene oxide gas, then aerated and stored at room temperature. The results of spinal fusion, both cervical and lumbar, using 187 gas-sterilized bone grafts in 58 patients operated on over the past year and half, were reviewed and compared wit

In 2004 a law was introduced in The Netherlands, which gives offspring conceived by semen or oocyte donation the right to know the identity of the donor. The law also regulates the provision of other information concerning the donor to the offspring, their parents or their general practitioner. With the introduction of this law, a choice has been made in which the wish of offspring prevails above others involved. Donors can no longer claim absolute anonymity; they are anonymous at the time of donation, but if a child aged > or =16 years requests information the donor may now be traced. During
