Effect of knee position on hip and knee torques during the barbell squat.

UNLABELLED: Some recommendations suggest keeping the shank as vertical as possible during the barbell squat, thus keeping the knees from moving past the toes. This study examined joint kinetics occurring when forward displacement of the knees is restricted vs. when such movement is not restricted. Seven weight-trained men (mean +/- SD; age = 27.9 +/- 5.2 years) were videotaped while performing 2 variations of parallel barbell squats (barbell load = body weight). Either the knees were permitted to move anteriorly past the toes (unrestricted) or a wooden barrier prevented the knees from moving a

Two methods for the measurement of voluntary contraction torque in the biceps brachii muscle.

Appropriate measurement of maximal voluntary contraction force of a single limb muscle or of a muscle group is important in clinical and research situations. To measure muscle force, one segment of an isometric measuring brace is fixed to a support and force is applied to the other. The output of this arrangement is affected by additional contributions such as pushing or pulling with the whole body. This paper quantifies the differences between measurements of torque produced by the biceps brachii with the brace fixed versus those produced when the elbow joint was isolated by suspending the br

The influence of lordosis on axial trunk torque and trunk muscle myoelectric activity.

Force contributions from the facet complex and posterior ligaments during the generation of axial torque are a function of lordosis, and it has been speculated that these forces together with muscular contributions play a role in axial trunk twisting. This study investigated the electromyographic activity of the trunk musculature and torque-generating capacity of the lumbar spine under the conditions of normal lordosis, hyperlordosis, and hypolordosis. Eleven male subjects volunteered for this study. The subjects performed isometric twisting efforts and maximum dynamic twisting efforts at 30 d

[Isokinetic torque of the knee extensor and flexor in patients with recurrent patellar dislocation].

UNLABELLED: In order to establish the role of muscle strength in the recurrent dislocation of the patella, an isokinetic study was performed using BIODEX, by which the concentric (CC) and passive eccentric (PEC) torques of the quadriceps and hamstrings were measured. The angle velocity was set at 30 degrees and 90 degrees/sec. The subjects were divided into three groups: (I) non-surgical, (II) surgical and (III) normal control. In each group 20 knees were tested, and the following results were obtained. 1. Peak torque: At either 30 degrees/sec or 90 degrees/sec of velocity, it was significantl

Lower extremity preference and knee extensor torques in intercollegiate soccer players.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether lower extremity preference influenced the relationship between the dominant and nondominant knee extensors of intercollegiate soccer players. Twelve recreational athletes and 12 soccer players completed isometric contractions at 60 degrees flexion, and concentric-eccentric contraction cycles at angular velocities of 60 degrees and 180 degrees/s through a range of motion from 90 degrees to 10 degrees knee flexion. Although the soccer players demonstrated greater peak and average torques, and greater differences between their dominant and nondom

Unconventional magnon-mediated spin torque enabled by ferroelectric domain engineering in multiferroic BiFeO3.

Spin current provides an energy-efficient approach for manipulating magnetization, when its spin polarization aligns with the magnetization direction. However, conventional spin-source materials possess high crystalline symmetry, restricting spin polarization to be orthogonal to both spin and charge current directions. Here, we overcome this limitation by utilizing the concept of magnon-mediated spin-orbit torque through integration of the insulating multiferroic BiFeO3 with a conventional spin-source material. We observe that spin polarization generated by conventional spin-source material ca

Acoustofluidic separation of oblate spheroids from spheres using acoustic radiation torque and force.

Cells, bacteria, and other bioparticles exist in diverse shapes, and their morphology plays a pivotal role in biological functions and clinical significance. Various microfluidic approaches have been developed for shape-based separation of bioparticles with the same or similar volume; however, most of them were limited to separation of prolate spheroids from spheres or required a priori labeling and consequent detection. Here, we propose a vertical-type acoustofluidic method for the first separation of oblate spheroids from spheres in a label-free manner. The acoustic radiation torque suppress

Anomalous Hall spin current drives self-generated spin-orbit torque in a ferromagnet.

Spin-orbit torques enable energy-efficient manipulation of magnetization by electric current and hold promise for applications ranging from non-volatile memory to neuromorphic computing. Here we report the discovery of a giant spin-orbit torque induced by anomalous Hall current in ferromagnetic conductors. This anomalous Hall torque is self-generated as it acts on the magnetization of the ferromagnet that engenders the torque. The magnitude of the anomalous Hall torque is sufficiently large to fully negate magnetic damping of the ferromagnet, which allows us to implement a microwave spin torqu

Orbital torque switching of room temperature two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2.

Efficiently manipulating the magnetization of van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets has attracted considerable interest in developing room-temperature two-dimensional (2D) material-based memory and logic devices. Here, taking advantage of the unique properties of the vdW ferromagnet as well as promising characteristics of the orbital Hall effect, we demonstrate the room-temperature magnetization switching of vdW ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 through the orbital torque generated by the orbital Hall material, Titanium (Ti). The switching current density is estimated to be around 1.6×106 A/cm2, comparable to t

Restoring-torque-induced current reversal and transport enhancement in confined active matter systems.

Previous studies about directed transport of active matter have overlooked the restoring torques arising from confinement that significantly impact the collective behavior. We numerically investigated the transport of active particles experiencing restoring torques (coupling the steric and confining forces) in a periodic channel. It is demonstrated that restoring torques can significantly enhance the rectification, and can induce current reverse. With a fixed positive asymmetry parameter, the scaled average velocity shows a peak function in the negative direction as the restoring torque increa

Emulation of neuron and synaptic functions in spin-orbit torque domain wall devices.

Neuromorphic computing (NC) architecture has shown its suitability for energy-efficient computation. Amongst several systems, spin-orbit torque (SOT) based domain wall (DW) devices are one of the most energy-efficient contenders for NC. To realize spin-based NC architecture, the computing elements such as synthetic neurons and synapses need to be developed. However, there are very few experimental investigations on DW neurons and synapses. The present study demonstrates the energy-efficient operations of neurons and synapses by using novel reading and writing strategies. We have used a W/CoFeB

Nocardia farcinica brain abscess with torque teno virus co-infection: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Brain abscesses caused by Nocardia are rare and difficult to diagnose. Nocardia farcinica is among the most common species; however, the conventional diagnosis of N. farcinica infection consists of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood culture and Gram staining. These procedures prolong the time to diagnosis and initiating treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus presented with headaches and dizziness persisting for 2 weeks, which was initially diagnosed as a brain abscess. Due to the unusual presentation and rapid progression of symptoms, she underwe

Collective skyrmion motion under the influence of an additional interfacial spin-transfer torque.

Here we study the effect of an additional interfacial spin-transfer torque, as well as the well-established spin-orbit torque and bulk spin-transfer torque, on skyrmion collections-group of skyrmions dense enough that they are not isolated from one another-in ultrathin heavy metal/ferromagnetic multilayers, by comparing modelling with experimental results. Using a skyrmion collection with a range of skyrmion diameters and landscape disorder, we study the dependence of the skyrmion Hall angle on diameter and velocity, as well as the velocity as a function of diameter. We show that inclusion of

Field-Free Spin-Orbit Torque Switching Enabled by the Interlayer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction.

Perpendicularly magnetized structures that are switchable using a spin current under field-free conditions can potentially be applied in spin-orbit torque magnetic random-access memory (SOT-MRAM). Several structures have been developed; however, new structures with a simple stack structure and MRAM compatibility are urgently needed. Herein, a typical structure in a perpendicular spin-transfer torque MRAM, the Pt/Co multilayer and its synthetic antiferromagnetic counterpart with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, was observed to possess an intrinsic interlayer chiral interaction between neighbo

Torque teno virus microRNA detection in cerebrospinal fluids of patients with neurological pathologies.

BACKGROUND: Torque teno virus (TTV) is a widespread anellovirus that establishes persistent infections in humans and represents the most abundant component of the human virome. TTV encodes microRNAs (miRNA) which are found both in viremic and not viremic subjects being potentially ideal tools for the virus to evade the immune system response and to maintain chronic infection in the host. OBJECTIVE: To investigate TTV-DNA loads and TTV-miRNAs expression in cerebrospinal fluids (CSF) from subjects under analysis for the assessment of neurological diseases. STUDY DESIGN: Detection of TTV-DNA an
