High-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation at 20 Hz: A Case Series Evaluating Efficacy in Treatment-Resistant Migraine After 10 Hz Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Failure.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) interventions were approved for migraine headache by the US Food and Drug Administration since 2013; however, it is unclear if 10 Hz frequency repetitive TMS (rTMS) patient relapses, should frequency of TMS be enhanced to 20 Hz protocol? This case series addresses the effectiveness of 20 Hz frequency rTMS in treatment-refractory migraine patients. CASE REPORT: Five voluntary treatment-refractory migraine patients, referred from Medicine, Neurology, and Neurosurgery departments with mean duration of 11.8 years of migraine, not

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation as Treatment of Poststroke Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed that the application of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) during stroke rehabilitation improve the depression symptoms in poststroke depression (PSD). However, some studies showed inconsistent results. The study was designed to make a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of noninvasive brain stimulation (tDCS and rTMS) on PSD. METHODS: Articles published before July 2021 were searched in databases: PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. STATA 12.0 software was utilized to make meta-an

Efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation in focal hand dystonia: Systematic review of intervention trials.

We reviewed trials examining the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) (seven trials) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) (seven trials) in focal and dystonia (FHD). Among tDCS trials, one randomized controlled trial and three quasi-experimental studies showed evidence of efficacy; these trials combined different types of stimulations or used tDCS along with neurorehabilitation. Four rTMS trials showed evidence of efficacy but differed in stimulation parameters. Risk of bias was noted in nearly all the trials. There is weak and inconsistent evidence for

The use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and vagal nerve stimulation in the treatment of depression.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Patients with depressive disorders often fail to respond to standard antidepressant medications and have few available treatment alternatives. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and vagal nerve stimulation have been developed and investigated over the last 10 years as potential treatment options for this and other psychiatric conditions. The aim of this paper is to review recent therapeutic trials of these techniques. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies appear to have confirmed that standard left-sided repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation has antidepressant ef

Acupuncture combined with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation vs repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation alone for recovery of hemiparesis after ischemic stroke: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety of acupuncture combined with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) versus rTMS alone for recovery of limb motor function in patients with post-ischemic stroke hemiparesis. METHODS: Eight databases were searched up to September 25, 2025, for randomised controlled trials comparing the combination therapy with rTMS alone. The primary outcome was recovery of motor function, assessed by the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) total, upper-extremity, and lower-extremity scores. Secondary outcomes included activities of daily living, assessed by th

Time perception in stimulant-dependent participants undergoing repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The dopaminergic (DA) system is an important neural system for the modulation of time perception and the timing of motor actions. Dysregulation of the DA system is related to chronic use of stimulant drugs, which lead, among others, to executive dysfunctions. Little is known instead about the potential deficiencies in temporal processing of stimulant-dependent individuals. The present study aimed to investigate temporal processing using a time bisection task with different temporal intervals in chronic cocaine users undergoing repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). Evaluation and Utility of Submaximal Stimulation Intensity in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in the Standing Horse☆.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been successfully used in horses to evaluate function and integrity of descending motor pathways in patients affected by neurological gait abnormalities. In preceding studies, lengthening latency times (LT) of cranially evoked limb muscle potentials have been considered a reliable diagnostic parameter. Standardized settings use device output signal intensities of 100%. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of submaximal stimulation intensities (SI) and to determine the minimum coil output necessary to evoke motor unit potentials. As an ad

Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the brain: What is stimulated? - A consensus and critical position paper.

Transcranial (electro)magnetic stimulation (TMS) is currently the method of choice to non-invasively induce neural activity in the human brain. A single transcranial stimulus induces a time-varying electric field in the brain that may evoke action potentials in cortical neurons. The spatial relationship between the locally induced electric field and the stimulated neurons determines axonal depolarization. The induced electric field is influenced by the conductive properties of the tissue compartments and is strongest in the superficial parts of the targeted cortical gyri and underlying white m

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Cocaine Use Disorder: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine use disorder (CUD) presents high relapse rates and limited treatment options. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown promise, but evidence in clinical practice is scarce. METHODS: We conducted a naturalistic retrospective study using medical records of patients with CUD (n = 93) who received rTMS treatment in a private clinic between October 2018 and 2021. Thirty-two (rTMS) sessions were administered: 2 daily sessions in the first week and 2 sessions per week at a high-frequency (10 Hz) stimulation at 120% motor threshold to the left dorsolateral pre

Corticospinal conduction in RFC1-related disease: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

BACKGROUND: Biallelic intronic expansions in RFC1 cause cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS), which may present with hyperreflexia despite the coexistence of severe sensory neuropathy. The mechanism of this apparent corticospinal involvement remains unclear. METHODS: We assessed corticospinal tract integrity by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in 18 patients with genetically confirmed RFC1-related disease. Resting motor threshold (RMT), central motor conduction time (CMCT), and motor evoked potential/compound muscle action potential (MEP/CMAP) ampli

A Rare Case of Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizure Following Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), also referred to as functional seizures, are events that mimic epileptic seizures but are not triggered by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. According to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD)-11, PNES are classified as dissociative disorders. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation therapy commonly used to treat major depression, particularly in cases where other treatments have not been effective. PNES has not been associated with TMS previously. Here, we describe a 52-year-old Cauc

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for post-traumatic stress disorder in adults.

BACKGROUND: The estimated lifetime prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults worldwide has been estimated at 3.9%. PTSD appears to contribute to alterations in neuronal network connectivity patterns. Current pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments for PTSD are associated with inadequate symptom improvement and high dropout rates. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive therapy involving induction of electrical currents in cortical brain tissue, may be an important treatment option for PTSD to improve remission rates and for people who ca

Cortical plasticity in AQP4-positive NMOSD: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Aquaporin-4 antibody-positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4-NMOSD) is an autoimmune disease characterized by suboptimal recovery from attacks and long-term disability. Experimental data suggest that AQP4 antibodies can disrupt neuroplasticity, a fundamental driver of brain recovery. A well-established method to assess brain LTP is through intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS). This study aimed to explore neuroplasticity in AQP4-NMOSD patients by examining long-term potentiation (LTP) through iTBS. We conducted a proof-of-principle study including 8 patients with AQP4-NMOSD

Adverse childhood experiences and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation outcomes for depression.

BACKGROUND: History of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is associated with poorer treatment outcomes in depression. How ACEs affect outcomes from repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is not well-defined. The primary aim was to investigate whether ACEs affect depression outcomes in patients receiving high frequency rTMS, either deep TMS (dTMS) or intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS), to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. METHODS: The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) was collected at baseline and every 2 weeks for 4-6 weeks. Outcomes included improvemen
