The uncanny valley effect describes a phenomenon where humanoid, almost lifelike virtual agents evoke feelings of discomfort in the observers. The Pathogen Avoidance Hypothesis proposes that these feelings are based on a cognitive mechanism that originally evolved to motivate pathogen avoidance. Slight imperfections in virtual agents are thereby misconceived as cues of communicable diseases that elicit disgust and avoidance behavior. Whether uncanny entities also increase mucosal immune responses, particularly when immediate avoidance is impossible, currently remains elusive. The present study

The anatomical complexity of the thyroid region presents significant challenges in surgical training, particularly regarding the identification and preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid glands. We present a prototype of a virtual reality simulator designed to support thyroidectomy training by enabling the immersive, interactive exploration of CT-derived, deformable anatomical models in a photorealistic operating room environment. Structures not detectable in CT, such as nerves and glands, were manually integrated. The simulator was evaluated qualitatively by three surge

Virtual reality (VR) is a technology that allows to interact with recreated digital environments and situations with enhanced realism. VR has shown good acceptability and promise in different mental health conditions. No systematic review has evaluated the use of VR in Bipolar Disorder (BD). This PRISMA-compliant systematic review searched PubMed and Web of Science databases (PROSPERO: CRD42023467737) to identify studies conducted in individuals with BD in which VR was used. Results were systematically synthesized around four categories (cognitive and functional evaluation, clinical assessment

Virtual reality therapy has been shown to be effective in coping with psychological disorders accompanied by cardiovascular disease. Age appears to be a factor that can affect the effectiveness of psychological therapy in a virtual environment. Therefore, the aim of the study was to explore whether there are age-related differences in the effectiveness of reducing levels of depression and anxiety during a virtual reality psychological intervention implemented for rehabilitation. The study included 25 younger (< 65 years) and 25 older (65 +) patients with cardiovascular disease who participated

In this article, we present a novel approach to performing engineering simulation in an interactive environment. A synesthetic design approach is employed, which enables the user to gather information about the system's behaviour more holistically, at the same time as facilitating interaction with the simulated system. The system considered in this work is a snake robot moving on a flat surface. The dynamic simulation of the robot's movement is realised in dedicated engineering software, whereas this software exchanges information with the 3D visualisation software and a Virtual Reality (VR) h

Rumination syndrome (RS) is the repeated, effortless food regurgitation during or immediately after eating or drinking, which could be followed by rechewing, reswallowing, or spitting out of the regurgitant gastric contents. The mechanism by which RS ensues is because of the habitual contraction of the abdominal wall muscles leading to increased intra-abdominal pressure and regurgitation of gastric contents. Therefore, diaphragmatic breathing techniques and biofeedback are helpful in these patients to counteract the habitual abdominal contractions. We present a case of a 26-year-old woman diag

Tooth extraction is one of the most common causes of dental anxiety and pain, leading to the elevation of blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR). Such effects may be exaggerated and cause life-threatening accidents in patients with hypertension. Therefore, the pain and anxiety management of these patients is imperative. Virtual reality (VR) has been demonstrated to be a distraction method to relieve anxiety and pain in clinical operations. Thus, we hypothesized that VR can control the elevation of BP and HR in patients with hypertension. In this study, 96 eligible patients with controlled hyp

IMPORTANCE: Virtual reality in head-mounted displays (HMD-VR) may be a valuable tool in occupational therapy to address anxiety. Findings from the virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) literature may facilitate translation of HMD-VR to occupational therapy psychosocial practice.
OBJECTIVE: To explore how HMD-VR has been used to treat anxiety through VRET and could be translated to occupational therapy.
DATA SOURCES: We searched seven electronic databases for articles published between 2000 and 2020: CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, ERIC, Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Search

The purpose of this study was (1) to implement a test for binocular imbalance in a Virtual Reality headset, (2) to assess its testability, reliability and outcomes in a population of clinical patients and (3) to evaluate the relationships of interocular acuity difference, stereoacuity and binocular imbalance to amblyogenic risk factors. 100 volunteers (6 to 70 years old, mean 21.2 ± 16.2), 21 with no amblyogenic risk factors and 79 with amblyopia or a history of amblyopia participated. Participants were classified by amblyogenic risk factor (24 anisometropic, 25 strabismic and 30 mixed) and, f

The current meta-analysis aims to investigate and clarify existing research on virtual reality (VR) as a medium to elicit empathy. An exhaustive literature search (updated to February 29, 2020) enabled us to locate seven published articles, yielding a total of nine independent samples. The results reveal statistically significant positive changes in perspective-taking outcomes after VR exposure (d+ = 0.51 [95 percent CI: 0.15-0.88]) but they did not note in empathy (d+ = 0.21 [95 percent confidence interval, CI: -0.37-0.79]). A potential limitation of this work is the low number of studies inc

Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR) programs, focused on improving the health trajectory of patients with cardiovascular disease, strive to increase physical activity (PA) and cardiorespiratory fitness. However, historically low compliance with recommended PA has prompted exploration of alternatives to traditional courses of exercise therapy. One alternative, exergaming, or the requirement of physical exercise inherent to a video game's activities, has shown to have a promising impact in improving patient self-efficacy for exercise training using digital hardware (eg, the Wii or the Xbox Kinect). There is often a need to more precisely identify the extent of pathology and the fine elements of intracranial anatomic features during the diagnostic process and during many operations in the nose, sinus, orbit, and skull base region. In two case reports, we describe the methods used in the diagnostic workup and surgical therapy in the nose and paranasal sinus region. Besides baseline x-ray, multislice computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, operative field imaging was performed via a rapid prototyping model, virtual endoscopy, and 3-D imaging. Different head tissues were visuali

The urge to gamble is a psychological, physiological, and emotional state involved in the maintenance of pathological gambling. The ability of repeated exposure to a virtual gambling environment to modify the urge to gamble and perceived self-efficacy (PSE) is investigated. Ten video lottery players move throughout a virtual bar with five video lottery terminals five times. The urge to gamble and PSE do not significantly vary during exposure to the gambling environment. However, the desire to gamble significantly increases when passing from the practice environment to the gambling environment.

We describe a robotic and virtual reality system for the rehabilitation of the forearm. It consists of a robotic arm and VR scenarios with a dynamic model of the human upper limb. The system allows to assign specific tasks to perform within the virtual environments. The system simulates the actions of the patient limb and allows exhaustive exercising and motor control, giving visuomotor and haptic feedback and trajectory positioning guidance. The system aids to evaluate the mobility condition of the patient, to personalize the difficult level of the therapy and provides kinematic measures of t

The use of virtual reality to treat anxiety disorders in adults is gaining popularity and its efficacy is supported by numerous outcome studies. Similar research for children is lagging behind. The outcome studies on the use of virtual reality to treat anxiety disorders in children currently address only specific phobias, and all of the available trials are reviewed in this article. Despite the limited number of studies, results are very encouraging for the treatment of school and spider phobias. A study with adolescents suggests that, at least for social anxiety, exposure stimuli would be mor
