Early Vital Sign Differences in Very Low Birth Weight Infants with Severe Intraventricular Hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Severe intraventricular hemorrhage (sIVH, grades 3 and 4) is a serious complication for very low birth weight (VLBW) infants and is often clinically silent requiring screening cranial ultrasound (cUS) for detection. Abnormal vital sign (VS) patterns might serve as biomarkers to identify risk or occurrence of sIVH. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study was conducted in VLBW infants admitted to two level-IV neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) between January 2009 and December 2018. Inclusion criteria were: birth weight <1.5 kg and gestational age (GA) <32 weeks, at least 12 hours

Development and validation of a machine learning model for predicting positive blood cultures using vital signs in ICU patients.

Bloodstream infections require timely and appropriate diagnosis and treatment, as inadequate management is associated with higher mortality. Previous predictive models for bloodstream infection have generally incorporated laboratory test results in addition to vital signs, although laboratory results are not always immediately available in clinical practice. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning model to predict positive blood cultures using only vital signs in febrile intensive care unit (ICU) patients (maximum BT ≥ 38 °C). Clinical data from ICU patients at two universi

Neurocognitive performance in an Irish collegiate athlete sample: a comparison with normative data from the CNS vital signs test.

Neurocognitive function is an important element of academic and sports performance, which is often impaired following sport-related concussion. Neurocognitive assessment provides objective data that can be clinically valuable in the process of concussion diagnosis and management. However, the applicability of existing normative data to specific populations remains uncertain. This study investigated neurocognitive performance in an Irish collegiate athlete sample using the CNS Vital Signs (CNS VS) battery and compared results with the published normative data. A cross-sectional design was emplo

Vital Signs: Epidemiology and Recent Trends in Methicillin-Resistant and in Methicillin-Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Bloodstream Infections - United States.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens in health care facilities and in the community, and can cause invasive infections, sepsis, and death. Despite progress in preventing methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) infections in health care settings, assessment of the problem in both health care and community settings is needed. Further, the epidemiology of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) infections is not well described at the national level. METHODS: Data from the Emerging Infections Program (EIP) MRSA population surveillance (2005-2016) and from the Pr

Associations of personal temperature exposure in the preceding days with vital signs, biochemical, and hydration parameters in cystic fibrosis.

The impact of long-term exposure to natural high ambient temperatures on people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) is understudied. In a Mediterranean setting, characterized by prolonged high temperatures, we performed a pilot study to assess personal ambient temperature exposure in pwCF and healthy controls and its impact on physiological parameters. Utilizing a prospective case-control design, we recruited pwCF and paired family controls and assessed, via wearable sensors, personal temperature exposure and physical activity during three two-week periods: summer, early autumn and late autumn-early w

Wireless battery-free ultrathin lithium-niobate resonator as wearable and implantable electronics for continuous monitoring of mechanical vital signs.

Continuous monitoring of physiological parameters associated with dynamic biomechanics, such as intracranial pressure (ICP) and vital signs, is important for clinical diagnosis of brain diseases and timely medical intervention. Current skin-interfaced and implant technologies face challenges in terms of bulky tethers and/or percutaneous wires with high infection risks. Here, we report the wireless, battery-free, and lightweight devices for both wearable and fully implantable applications. The devices incorporate an ultrathin piezoelectric resonator with suspended lithium niobate thin film (LNT
