Donor issues in Indonesia: A developing country in South East Asia.

In most developing countries in South East Asia blood services have not been treated properly as an important service to support health program. Indonesia as a large archipelago country in South East Asia has specific obstacles in managing a blood service. To position the country blood service profile especially in term of donor issues, we compared our blood service with that in other South East Asia countries. Indonesia has 17 thousand islands with 220 million inhabitants. Blood services have been mostly run by the Indonesian Red Cross as a government assignment since 1950. Donor recruitment

Impact of HIV risk and infection and the role of prevention services.

Blood-borne infection associated with injection drug use is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Over the last decade, HIV infection and its clinical sequelae have had a significant impact on research and interventions involving injecting drug users (IDUs) in the United States and elsewhere. Discussed are some of the major intervention options for reducing blood-borne infections in general and HIV in particular. The use of multiple interventions is considered within the community context in which both IDUs and service providers operate. Intervention options discussed include treatme

Control of streptococcal throat infections in schools; a cooperative program followed in Orange County.

Attempts to identify streptococcal throat infections on clinical evidence alone do not provide an adequate or reliable index of the prevalence of these infections in the community. Epidemiologic information on streptococcal throat infections based on bacteriological identification permits a more accurate assessment of the situation and more logical and more effective control measures. Recent refinements in laboratory procedures have provided a simple, reliable and relatively inexpensive method for the identification of Group A beta hemolytic streptococci by public health or clinical laboratori

Adverse event profile and associated factors following surgical voluntary medical male circumcision in two regions of Namibia, 2015-2018.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring clinical safety of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) is critical to minimize risk as VMMC programs for HIV prevention are scaled. This cross-sectional analysis describes the adverse event (AE) profile of a large-scale, routine VMMC program and identifies factors associated with the development, severity, and timing of AEs to provide recommendations for program quality improvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2015-2018 there were 28,990 circumcisions performed in International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) supported regions of Namibia in co

Voluntary medical male circumcision for HIV prevention among adolescents in Kenya: Unintended consequences of pursuing service-delivery targets.

INTRODUCTION: Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) provides significant reductions in the risk of female-to-male HIV transmission. Since 2007, VMMC has been a key component of the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief's (PEPFAR) strategy to mitigate the HIV epidemic in countries with high HIV prevalence and low circumcision rates. To ensure intended effects, PEPFAR sets ambitious annual circumcision targets and provides funding to implementation partners to deliver local VMMC services. In Kenya to date, 1.9 million males have been circumcised; in 2017, 60% of circumcis

Perceptions of voluntary consent among jail diverted veterans with co-occurring disorders.

This study assessed perceptions of voluntary consent among 69 veterans who enrolled in a "jail diversion" program for co-occurring disorders. Perceptions were measured using modified items from the MacArthur Perceived Coercion and Negative Pressure Scales. A majority reported that they "chose to" (88.4%) or "felt free to" (85.5%) enroll. Most reported having "control over" (69.6%) and "more influence than anyone else" regarding (60.9%) their participation. About half reported that enrollment was "their idea" (49.3%). Fewer reported perceptions of negative pressure, including the feeling that s

Massachusetts General Hospital participation in Operation Unified Assistance for tsunami relief in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

When Project HOPE invited Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) to participate in a tsunami relief mission aboard the USNS Mercy hospital ship in January 2005, MGH responded swiftly and enthusiastically. Overcoming differences in medical styles and standards, as well as a variety of cultural and institutional differences, MGH volunteers collaborated successfully with Navy personnel and volunteers from other hospitals to deliver excellent care to a large number of tsunami victims. Lessons were learned regarding the need for better initial team orientation, more-open communication, and more-trans

Developing a Comprehensive, Interdisciplinary Concussion Program.

There has been a growing trend of local and national coverage of and interest in concussion injuries over the past 2 decades. Increasing public concern over potential catastrophic and unknown long-term effects of sports-related concussion injuries has led to an acknowledgment of the strong public health need for addressing all concussion injuries, regardless of mechanism of injury. In efforts to address this need for concussion prevention and management, both in sports and nonsports, The University of Kansas Health System initiated the interdisciplinary Center for Concussion Management program

A prospective observational study examining weight and psychosocial change in adolescent and adult eating disorder inpatients admitted for nutritional rehabilitation using a high-energy re-feeding protocol.

BACKGROUND: High-energy re-feeding protocols are increasingly utilised for nutritional rehabilitation in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN), however, concern persists that adults with AN may be at greater risk of developing complications. In addition, research on psychological outcomes of eating disorder (ED) inpatient treatment programs, and outcomes of high-energy protocols in avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and bulimia nervosa (BN), is limited. This study of an ED inpatient program using a high-energy protocol, compared changes in weight and psychosocial outcomes betwe

Association between social skills and mental health outcomes in Health Science Residents in Brazil.

Residency programs play a crucial role in the development and technical training of young health professionals. However, mental health issues such as psychological distress, anxiety, and depression are prevalent, often influenced by work satisfaction and the learning environment. Despite their relevance, studies investigating the prevalence and associated factors of these conditions across medical, multidisciplinary, and veterinary residency programs remain scarce. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of psychological distress, anxiety, and depression, and to examine their association

Entrepreneurial ventures and whole-body donations: a regional perspective from the United States.

Human cadavers are crucial to medical science. While the debate on how to secure sufficient cadavers has focused primarily on donors' behaviors, procuring organizations' roles in increasing donations remain less explored. The United States offers a unique setting in which to examine this question since entrepreneurial ventures supplying cadavers for medical science have recently emerged alongside traditional academic-housed programs, raising both hopes and fears about their impact on whole-body donations. To assess their potential impact, an archival survey of voluntary, in-state whole-body do

EEG oscillations: how are they modulated during different phases of repetitive movements?

Voluntary movements are planned through the relative timing between submovements of movement sequences as part of the motor program. Different movement phases are characterized by specific amplitude modulation of cortical oscillations. The latter represent neurophysiological correlates of specific synchronization or desynchronization of different neuronal groups. In this Neuro Forum, we review recent evidence regarding the temporal relation between neurophysiological correlates of different phases of a repetitive motor task using electroencephalography and source localization using individuali

Psychiatric illness in U.S. Air Force Viet Nam prisoners of war: a five-year follow-up.

The U.S. Air Force prisoners of war (POWs) experienced a profound degree of stress during the Viet Nam War. The psychiatric status of this population has been monitored by an ongoing voluntary follow-up program from the time of repatriation through the following five years. Data indicate a significant degree of psychiatric readjustment problems, which were greatest among POWs captured before 1969. These findings support the association of an unusually stressful environment with an increased incidence of psychiatric illness.

Efficacy and acceptability of rapid, point-of-care HIV testing in two clinical settings in Ghana.

This study assessed the efficacy and acceptability of two rapid point-of-care HIV assays used in a voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) and a tuberculosis (TB) clinic in Kumasi, Ghana. Over a 4-week period in 2007, 95 individuals attending the VCT clinic and 35 patients with newly diagnosed TB were offered a rapid HIV test. Rates of return for positive results and attendance at the HIV clinic were compared with 471 individuals (395 attending the VCT clinic and 76 patients with TB), tested during an 8-week period 6 months earlier using standard testing procedures. All patients offered a rapid

Recent progress and concerns regarding the Japanese immunization program: addressing the "vaccine gap".

Recent progress in the Japanese immunization program has partially closed the "vaccine gap," i.e., the deficiencies in that program relative to immunization programs in other developed countries. During the last several years, seven new vaccines (12 new products, excluding influenza vaccines) have been introduced in Japan. Five of these new vaccines are produced outside Japan and four are now included as routine vaccines in the National Immunization Program, which is a new development in the licensing and financial support of imported vaccines. However, along with this progress, important conc
