Gait characteristics and influence of fatigue during the 6-minute walk test in patients with post-polio syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate gait in patients with post-polio syndrome, using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) combined with three-dimensional kinematic analysis. DESIGN: Descriptive study. SUBJECTS: Eighteen patients and 11 healthy controls. METHODS: Kinematic data were obtained during a 6MWT by a Vicon motion capture system. Distance, heart rate, leg tiredness, dyspnoea and exertion were also recorded. RESULTS: Patients with post-polio syndrome showed larger increases in leg tiredness (p < 0.001) and dyspnoea (p < 0.05) as a result of the 6MWT than did controls. Walking speed decreased by 14.1% i

The 6-minute walk test does not reliably detect changes in functional capacity of patients awaiting cardiac transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Peak oxygen consumption (Vo(2)peak) is a strong independent predictor of prognosis in patients with severe chronic heart failure (CHF) and is used to guide optimal timing of transplantation. However, its assessment is relatively expensive and time-consuming and requires sophisticated equipment and highly trained personnel. The purpose of this study was to determine whether changes in 6-minute walk test (6WT) distance, a simple, inexpensive potential alternative measure of functional capacity, can predict changes in Vo(2)peak in patients with severe CHF. METHODS: Sixteen subjects (

Ability of walking without a walking device in patients with spinal cord injury as determined using data from functional tests.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: More than half of independent ambulatory patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) need a walking device to promote levels of independence. However, long-lasting use of a walking device may introduce negative impacts for the patients. Using a standard objective test relating to the requirement of a walking device may offer a quantitative criterion to effectively monitor levels of independence of the patients. Therefore, this study investigated (1) ability of the three functional tests, including the five times sit-to-stand test (FTSST), timed up and go test (TUGT), and 10-m

In adults with advanced lung disease, the 1-minute sit-to-stand test underestimates exertional desaturation compared with the 6-minute walk test: an observational study.

QUESTION: In adults with advanced lung disease, do the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and 1-minute sit-to-stand test (1minSTS) elicit similar cardiorespiratory responses? Can the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) be estimated from the 1minSTS result? DESIGN: Prospective observational study using data collected during routine clinical practice. PARTICIPANTS: Eighty adults (43 males) with advanced lung disease, a mean age of 64 years (SD 10) and a mean forced expiratory volume in 1 second of 1.65 L (SD 0.77). OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants completed a 6MWT and a 1minSTS. During both tests, oxygen satu

A comparative study of lactate threshold testing outcomes: walking vs. running.

BACKGROUND: Although lactate threshold (LT) tests are widely used by athletes to evaluate endurance performance, such tests are not commonly applied in health controls among recreationally active subjects. This study aimed to investigate the test-retest reliability of walking as an exercise modality during LT testing and compare the test outcomes with those obtained during running. METHODS: Twenty-three male and female participants (25±3 year, 172±8 cm, 70±13 kg, and maximal oxygen consumption [VO<inf>2max</inf>] 51±5 mL·kg-1·min-1) performed four LT tests within 2-3 weeks, either using walki

Narrow Walk, Condition II, Semi-Tandem, Tandem, and Single Leg Stance Test Failure Could Predict Falls in Older Adults.

Current fall prevention guidelines are largely reactive to a history of falls and are thus an ineffective approach to primary fall prevention. This work aims to identify objective measures that predict fall risk to facilitate broader implementation in primary care settings. Longitudinal data were available from 952 men (48%) and women aged 60 to 97 enrolled in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging who had an index and subsequent visit approximately 2.5 years apart. Participants received objective measures at index visit and answered "yes" or "no" to the question "Have you fallen in the pas

Heart rate recovery in 1 minute after the 6-minute walk test predicts adverse outcomes in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Heart rate recovery in 1 minute (HRR1) after the end of the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) is a non-invasive method of determining autonomic dysfunction. This parameter remains largely unexplored in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) registries. We aimed to define the cut-off value and accuracy for abnormal HRR1 after the 6MWT and to investigate the association between HRR1 and clinical worsening in patients with PAH. This composite outcome was defined as first occurrence of all-cause death OR hospitalization from any cause OR disease progression characterized by decreased ≥ 15% in six-minute wa
