Effects of acute alcohol consumption on executive cognitive functioning in naturalistic settings.

Laboratory studies have demonstrated that acute alcohol intoxication can disrupt performance on neuropsychological tests of executive cognitive functioning such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). However, the generalizability of such findings to typical self-regulated alcohol intake in social settings can be questioned. In the present study, 86 young adults were recruited at Australian bars to perform a computer version of the WCST. Participants displayed blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) across a range from 0 to 0.15%. Although self-report measures of typical alcohol consumption, im

[Neuropsychological aspects of delusional disorders. Characteristic attributional style or cognitive deficit?].

BACKGROUND: "Pure" delusional disorders are clinically rare, and the neuropsychology of such disorders is poorly understood. Whereas "deficit" models suggest a cognitive impairment accounting for the incorrigible fixation of false beliefs, cognitive models propose the existence of a characteristic attributional style in patients to stabilise a fragile self. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The cognitive flexibility and attributional style of 21 patients diagnosed with delusional disorder according to ICD-10 were compared with a group of healthy controls paralleled for age, sex, education, and intelligen

The neuropsychological phenotype of velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS): relationship to psychopathology.

Children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS; N=14) and a comparison group of siblings (N=8) underwent comprehensive neuropsychological assessment to examine the relationship between cognitive functioning and psychopathology. Significant group differences were obtained on tests of full scale and verbal intellectual functioning and perceptual-motor skills. With the exception of performance on tests of attention and executive functioning, children with VCFS displayed a profile consistent with nonverbal learning disability (NLD). However, within group comparisons revealed significantly poorer vi

Comparative Clinical and Cognitive Outcomes of rTMS and Vortioxetine in Major Depressive Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive dysfunction is a core feature of major depressive disorder (MDD). Although both repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and vortioxetine have demonstrated procognitive effects, direct comparative evidence remains limited. This study compared the clinical and cognitive outcomes of rTMS and vortioxetine in patients with MDD. METHODS: In this 8-week naturalistic study, 40 patients with MDD received either rTMS (n = 25) or vortioxetine (n = 15). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). Cognitive performance was

The story of memory and executive functions in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological findings in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are mainly clustered around the role of memory and executive functions. However, outcomes vary across different OCD populations. In addition, the extent to which each of these factors can distinguish patients with OCD (PwOCD) from healthy individuals remains uncertain and attracts great attention. The present study aims to investigate the above issues. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional study of 182 individuals (90 PwOCD and 92 matched healthy controls). After screening for inclusion and exclusion criteria, the part

Identifying neurofunctional domains across substance use disorders.

Background: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are heterogeneous across multiple functional domains. Various frameworks posit that domains (e.g., executive function) contribute to the persistence of SUDs; however, the domains identified in different studies vary. Objectives: We used factor analysis to identify the underlying latent domains present in a large sample (N = 5,244, 55.8% male) with a variety of SUDs to yield findings more generalizable than studies with a narrower focus.Method: Participants (1,384 controls and 3,860 participants with one or more SUDs including alcohol, cocaine, cannabis
