Structural fat grafting: more than a permanent filler.

Grafted fat has many attributes of an ideal filler, but the results, like those of any procedure, are technique dependent. Fat grafting remains shrouded in the stigma of variable results experienced by most plastic surgeons when they first graft fat. However, many who originally reported failure eventually report success after altering their methods of harvesting, refinement, and placement. Many surgeons have refined their techniques to obtain long-term survival and volume replacement with grafted fat. They have observed that transplanted fat not only adjusts facial and body proportion but als

Dento-skeletal adaptation after bite-raising in growing rats with different masticatory muscle capacities.

The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of normal and hypofunctional masticatory muscles on dento-skeletal adaptation to posterior bite blocks in growing rats. Fifty-two young male rats were divided into two groups, fed a hard and soft diet, respectively, to develop different functional capacities in the masticatory muscles. Bone markers were inserted in the mandible on day 0. After two weeks, an appliance that raised the bite by 2 mm was inserted in half of each group. Lateral radiographs were taken on day 0, 14, 28, and 42 of the experiment. Images of the mandible were superimposed

5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(1B) receptors in the ventrolateral striatum differentially modulate apomorphine-induced jaw movements in rats.

The ability of serotonin 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(1B) receptors in the ventrolateral striatum to modulate dopamine receptor-mediated jaw movements was investigated in freely moving rats, using a magnet-sensing system combined with an intracerebral drug microinjection technique. Apomorphine (1 mg/kg i.v.) has been found to elicit repetitive jaw movements. Bilateral injections of the 5-HT(1A) receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT (1 and 4 microg/0.2 microl in each side) into the ventrolateral striatum partially but significantly reduced apomorphine-induced repetitive jaw movements. The 5-HT(1A) receptor antagonis

Radiofrequency Thermoablation of the Gasserian Ganglion Versus the Peripheral Branches of the Trigeminal Nerve for Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Randomized, Control Trial.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia is the most painful condition of facial pain leading to impairment of routine activities. Although radiofrequency thermoablation (RFT) of the Gasserian ganglion is widely used for the treatment of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia in patients having ineffective pain relief with medical therapy, the incidence of complications like hypoesthesia, neuroparalytic keratitis, and masticatory muscles weakness is high. Recent case reports have shown the effectiveness of RFT of the peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve for relief of refractory chronic facial pain con

The efficacy of combining pulsed radiofrequency with low-temperature continuous radiofrequency for the treatment of primary trigeminal neuralgia: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) combined with low-temperature continuous radiofrequency (CRF) might be a novel technique for relieving trigeminal neuralgia (TN). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of high-voltage PRF combined with low-temperature CRF in primary TN. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial was performed between December 2, 2020, and October 26, 2022. Eligible patients with TN were randomly assigned at a 1:1 ratio to receive either PRF with a voltage of 70 V at 42°C for 600 seconds followed by CRF at 60°C for 270 seconds (PRF+CRF group) or PRF with a v

Postnatal development of masseteric motoneurons in congenital hypothyroid rats.

It has been known that an intact thyroid hormone is obligatory for the attainment of the normal masticatory function at the time of weaning. Following induced maternal thyroid hypo-function, the development of masseter motoneurons was determined at postnatal days 1, 7, 15 and 23 (weaning time), using retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the normal and hypothyroid pups. Based on the HRP labeling profile (strong and weak), the soma area of the masseteric labeled motoneurons was measured in each group. No significant morphological differences were observed at the end of the fir

Midfacial soft-tissue changes after mandibular setback surgery with or without paranasal augmentation: cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) volume superimposition.

The aim of this article is to compare the soft-tissue changes in the midfacial areas of patients who had undergone mandibular setback sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) with that of mandibular setback SSRO with paranasal augmentation. The subjects included 15 patients (group I), SSRO with paranasal augmentation and 20 patients (group II), SSRO alone. To evaluate the difference of the midfacial soft-tissue changes between groups, cone-beam computed tomography superimposition was utilized and the soft-tissue changes were measured both preoperatively and postoperatively by a 10 × 27 grid. Mini-retromandibular approach to condylar fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Among maxillofacial surgeons, a general agreement exists that the therapeutic strategy for intracapsular condylar fractures is conservative, while the treatment of extracapsular fractures of the mandibular condyle is extremely controversial. The indications and choice of treatment are less than uniform, often relying on the surgeon's personal experience and beliefs. The literature increasingly suggests that the surgical management of these fractures is superior to conservative management in functional terms. Nonetheless, the indications for surgically treating condylar fractures

A potent and selective calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor antagonist, MK-8825, inhibits responses to nociceptive trigeminal activation: Role of CGRP in orofacial pain.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are orofacial pains within the trigeminal distribution, which involve the masticatory musculature, the temporomandibular joint or both. Their pathophysiology remains unclear, as inflammatory mediators are thought to be involved, and clinically TMD presents pain and sometimes limitation of function, but often appears without gross indications of local inflammation, such as visible edema, redness and increase in temperature. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) has been implicated in other pain disorders with trigeminal distribution, such as migraine, of whic

[Anesthetic complications. The incidence of severe anesthetic complications in patients and families with progressive muscular dystrophy of the Duchenne and Becker types].

UNLABELLED: During the last 30 years a great number of case reports presented severe anaesthetic complications with sudden cardiac arrest in patients with muscular dystrophies, mostly unsuspected at the time of the event. As succinylcholine was involved in the majority of the intractable incidents with lethal outcome the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States recommended a warning of the administration of succinylcholine in young children and adolescents in 1992 and an extensive international discussion on the routine use of succinylcholine in paediatric anaesthesia. Inhibition of rabies virus multiplication by siRNA delivered through adenoviral vector in vitro in BHK-21 cells and in vivo in mice.

To evaluate antiviral potential of adenoviral vector-delivered small interfering RNA (siRNA) against rabies, recombinant, replication-defective adenoviral vectors (rAdV) encoding siRNAs targeting rabies virus (RV) polymerase (L) and nucleoprotein (N) genes were developed. The siRNAs were delivered as small hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) through these vectors. Treatment of BHK-21 cells with rAdV expressing siRNA targeting L gene (rAdV-L) and N gene (rAdV-N) (100 MOI) and their subsequent infection with RV (0.001 MOI, RV PV-11), reduced RV fluorescent foci by 48.2% (mean±SEM; 48.17±0.6540, N=6) and 41.8%

Investigating skin penetration depth and shape following needle-free injection at different pressures: A cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The effectiveness of needle-free injection devices in neocollagenesis for treating extended skin planes is an area of active research. It is anticipated that needle-free injection systems will not only be used to inject vaccines or insulin, but will also greatly aid skin rejuvenation when used to inject aesthetic materials such as hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin, and placental extracts. There has not been any specific research to date examining how materials penetrate the skin when a needle-free injection device is used. In this study, we investigated how material i
