The use of silicone oil-RMN3 (Oxane HD) as heavier-than-water internal tamponade in complicated inferior retinal detachment surgery.

BACKGROUND: Conventional silicone oil provides suboptimal support of the inferior retina. In this study we evaluated the efficacy of Oxane HD in the management of complex retinal detachments involving lower quadrants of the retina. METHODS: A prospective, interventional, comparative study. Eighteen patients were recruited. Treatment outcomes were compared with a historical control group of 14 patients. Patients with grade C3 PVR or greater and inferior retinal breaks, recurrent inferior retinal detachments (with or without PVR) and giant retinal tears were included. In those patients who re-d

Corneal Anterior Power Calculation for an IOL in Post-PRK Patients.

PURPOSE: After corneal refractive surgery, there is an overestimation of the corneal power with the devices routinely used to measure it. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine whether, in patients who underwent photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), it is possible to predict the earlier preoperative anterior corneal power from the postoperative (PO) posterior corneal power. A comparison is made using a formula published by Saiki for laser in situ keratomileusis patients and a new one calculated specifically from PRK patients. METHODS: The Saiki formula was tested in 98 eyes of 9

Contemporary Trends for the Treatment of In-Stent Restenosis in the United States, 2009 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: In-stent restenosis (ISR) remains an important cause of repeat revascularization despite advances in drug-eluting stent technology. Contemporary adoption patterns and outcomes of adjunctive plaque-modification strategies for ISR are incompletely characterized. We evaluated national trends and in-hospital outcomes of ISR percutaneous coronary intervention treated with adjunctive plaque-modification devices versus conventional plain old balloon angioplasty. METHODS: All ISR percutaneous coronary intervention procedures in the National Cardiovascular Data Registry CathPCI Registry fr

Are Coronary Calcium-Modifying Techniques Levelling the Playfield?

Patients with heavily calcified coronary arteries represent a challenge in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), as severe calcification impairs device delivery and limits optimal stent expansion, leading to higher risks of stent thrombosis, restenosis, and adverse clinical outcomes. Approximately 20% of patients undergoing PCI exhibit severe coronary calcification, which independently predicts incomplete revascularization, increased mortality, and higher rates of major adverse cardiovascular events over mid-term follow-up. Recent advances have focused on improving the assessment and manag

Pathogenesis, clinical features and management of recurrent corneal erosions.

Recurrent corneal erosions (RCE) are common. They are characterised by repeated episodes of pain, difficulty in opening the eyes, watering, and photophobia resulting from poor epithelial adhesion. In the majority of patients with RCE, trauma is the initiating factor. Epithelial, stromal, and endothelial corneal dystrophies have all been described in association with RCE. Other causes that may lead to RCE include chemical and thermal injuries, previous herpetic keratitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, ocular rosacea, diabetes mellitus, Salzmann's nodular degeneration, band keratopathy, previous

Corneal melts associated with topically applied nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

PURPOSE: Topically applied nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are frequently used to prevent miosis during cataract surgery, to treat ocular allergies, to prevent excessive postoperative inflammation following cataract surgery, and to treat cystoid macular edema following cataract surgery. They have also been used to control pain and photophobia following radial keratotomy and excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy. During August of 1999, severe complications following topical NSAID use including corneal melting, were reported by members of the American Society of Cataract and Re

[Astigmatism in corneal graft. Prevention and treatment].

The tremendous development of the photokeratoscope and corneal topography analysis explains the development of corneal astigmatism study in corneal graft. Our study consists in a review of the bibliography. The prevention of the astigmatism needs the following: before the trephination, the astigmatism has to be treated (correction of against the rule astigmatism which is usual in the aphake people); during the trephination, to minimize the deformation of the eye ball, to choose a good diameter for the keratoconus case, to use a pneumatic trephine in order to have a perpendicular cut (the use o
