Adult trauma and HIV status among Latinas: effects upon psychological adjustment and substance use.

Latinas have unique cultural factors that can contribute to their health, including recent immigration, documentation status, and language barriers. Additional stressors and experiencing traumatic events can further compromise their psychological adjustment and substance use. This study tests the differential contribution of adult trauma and other life stressors to psychological adjustment and substance use among Latinas who differ in their HIV status and level of acculturation. Baseline and 1-year follow-up data on a community sample of 113 (79 HIV-positive and 34 HIV-negative) 1 to 50 year o

Sex differences in subjective cognition among middle-aged and older Hispanic/Latino adults: Findings from the HCHS/SOL and SOL-INCA.

INTRODUCTION: Sex differences in subjective cognitive decline (SCD) exist, yet the extent to which these differences generalize to underrepresented groups is unknown. Therefore, we investigated relationships between sex and SCD among Hispanic/Latino adults. METHOD: Participants were 5985 Hispanic/Latino adults from the Study of Latinos - Investigation of Neurocognitive Aging. We performed survey-adjusted linear regressions to test the associations between sex (male/female) with SCD and modifications by cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, social and language acculturation. SCD was measured usin

Gene-by-Environment Interactions on Alcohol Use Among Asian American College Freshmen.

OBJECTIVE: Among northeast Asians, the variant aldehyde dehydrogenase allele, ALDH2*2 (rs671, A/G, minor/major), has been inversely associated with alcohol dependence. The strength of the associations between ALDH2*2 and drinking behaviors depends on the developmental stage, the phenotype studied, and other moderating variables. This study examined ALDH2 gene status as a moderator of the associations between parental drinking, peer drinking, and acculturation with alcohol use among 222 Chinese American and Korean American college freshmen. METHOD: Negative binomial regressions were used to te

Premarital sexual behavior among Chinese college students in the United States.

Little is known about sexuality among Chinese in the U.S. There are reasons to believe that their sexual attitudes and behaviors would differ from those of Chinese in Asia as well as other groups in the U.S. This survey of ethnic Chinese college students in the U.S. examined the permissiveness of their attitudes toward premarital sex and their premarital sexual behavior with an eye toward their levels of acculturation. Over 60% approved of premarital sexual intercourse when the partners were in love or engaged. There was no significant gender difference in sexual permissiveness. Most of the me

Psychosocial predictors of emotional labour among employees of merged and acquired banks in Ibadan, South-West, Nigeria.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are common among financial institutions. This process often exerts immense pressure on employees of these institutions. Hence, this study touches on the significant but neglected human angle aspect of M&A. Therefore, the study examined psychosocial predictors of emotional labour among employees of merged and acquired banks in Ibadan. The study design is cross-sectional, which involves using a quantitative data collection method to elicit responses from the participants. Furthermore, the convenience sampling method was used and selected four hundred, and twenty-t

An Examination of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder-Related Symptoms Among a Sample of Latinx Sexual- and Gender-Minority Immigrants.

Latinx sexual- and gender- minority (SGM) immigrants experience stress across multiple axes of identity, which can lead to negative health consequences. Using an intersectional-cultural theory of stress, the current study sampled 194 Latinx SGM immigrants to examine the association between intersectional discrimination (i.e., race- and sexual orientation-based), acculturative stress, symptoms related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and somatic distress. We used moderated hierarchical linear regression analysis to determine whether social support moderated the associations among inters

Culturally related risk and protective factors for alcohol and marijuana use among Latinx college students.

College students indicate high use of alcohol and marijuana; cultural influences may affect substance use. This study assessed the associations between alcohol and marijuana past 30-day use, and microaggressions, acculturation, and familism among Latinx college students. Participants (n = 484) completed measures, and structural equation modeling was used to yield results. Findings suggested that microaggressions were a risk factor for alcohol use, (B = -1.29, p = .007) while acculturation was a risk factor for marijuana use (B = 1.06, p = .011). No other statistically significant associations

Breast Cancer Screening Among Dominican Latinas: A Closer Look at Fatalism and Other Social and Cultural Factors.

With the marked increase of the Latino population in the United States during the past 20 years, there has been growing interest in the social, cultural, and structural factors that may impede breast cancer screening among Latino women, especially among those subgroups that have been understudied. Acculturation and fatalism are central cultural constructs in these growing fields of research. However, there is great debate on the extent to which acculturation and fatalism affect breast cancer screening among Latinas relative to other social or structural factors or logistical barriers. Moreover

Health Literacy Within a Diverse Community-Based Cohort: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Health literacy has yet to be described in a non-clinical, racially diverse, community-based cohort. METHODS: Four questions assessing health literacy were asked during annual phone encounters with Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) participants between 2016 and 2018 (n = 3629). We used prevalence ratios (PRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to characterize how demographic and acculturation factors related to limited health literacy. Models adjusted for age, sex, and race/ethnicity, and race/ethnicity-stratified models were also examined. RESULTS: Limited health lit
