Molecular interactions in juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma: preliminary signature and relevant review.

BACKGROUND: The molecular profile of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is extremely variable. In absence of established molecular signature the molecular targeting seems difficult for this heterogeneous disease. To establish a basic molecular signature, this paper analyses the interaction of 7 markers according to their ranks as per the decreasing scale of molecular expression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen samples of JNA were obtained following surgical excision and mRNA expressions were established through real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for vasculoendothelial growth

Nasal Septal Angiofibroma in a Post-Menopausal Woman: A Rare Entity.

Juvenile angiofibromas (JAs) are well-characterised in literature, arising typically in the posterolateral wall of the nasal cavity of young males. Numerous theories have been proposed to explain the occurrence of this unique and rare tumour. Angiofibromas originating in other sites within the head and neck have been described but this is exceedingly rare, constituting less than 2% of all diagnosed cases. Extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare lesion, and more importantly, controversial. It is not known whether it is actually a relative of the well-known JA that is seen exclusively in adol

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma: experience at a tertiary care centre in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Managed, feral and wild populations of European honey bee subspecies, Apis mellifera, are currently facing severe colony losses globally. There is consensus that the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, that switched hosts from the Eastern honey bee Apis cerana to the Western honey bee A. mellifera, is a key factor driving these losses. For >20 years, breeding efforts have not produced European honey bee colonies that can survive infestations without the need for mite control. However, at least three populations of European honey bees have developed this ability by means of natura

Transnasal endoscopic management of angiofibroma extending to pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical approaches to the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae are complex and cause significant morbidity. The commonest benign tumour to extend to the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae is angiofibroma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 15 male patients aged 12-27 years with recurrent, severe epistaxis. After computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, a modified Wormald and Robinson's two-surgeon approach was used. Follow up, with endoscopy and magnetic resonance imaging, ranged from two to five years. RESULTS: Twelve patients were cure

[Analysis of prognostic factors in endoscopic surgery for juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma].

OBJECTIVE: Analyzing the prognostic factors in endoscopic surgery of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas (JNA). METHOD: Forty-seven records of JNA, treated with the endoscopic, from 2002 to 2008 were reviewed retrospectively. Previous surgery in other hospitals, sites involved, whether selective embolization was performed before surgery, feeding vessels, operative techniques and follow-up results were recorded. Evaluated factors include previous surgery for resection of JNA, vascular supply from carotid artery, surgery after selective embolization, involvement of cavernous bone in the root

Treatment of facial angiofibroma of tuberous sclerosis using cultured epithelial autografts.

Treatment of facial angiofibroma of tuberous sclerosis is problematic, because the skin lesions involve entire dermis. Five patients aged from 14 to 33 (mean: 23.6) years old with angiofibroma of tuberous sclerosis were treated with cultured epithelial autografts between 1995 and 2004. The entire area of the facial lesions was excised using a razor to remove large nodules, and then the remaining lesions were further abraded to a rather deep layer of the dermis to smooth the skin and remove small nodules. Then a cultured autologous epithelium was grafted onto the wound. In all patients, epithel

Loss of reflex tearing: an expected consequence of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

OBJECTIVE: To report the loss of reflex tearing after surgical treatment of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA). STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective case series of 8 patients with surgical extirpation of JNA from 1995 to 2003 in a major teaching hospital setting was studied for symptomatic xerophthalmia. RESULTS: One patient was lost to follow-up. Four of the remaining 7 patients reported a dry ipsilateral eye after surgical treatment of JNA. CONCLUSION: The location of the pterygopalatine ganglion and its associated fibers in the pterygopalatine fossa is directly adjacent to t

A result of sublabial transnasomaxillary approach for nasopharyngeal angiofibroma--retrospective study.

To evaluate the result of sublabial transnasomaxillary approach (STA) as a route for removal of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA). Eleven young male patients with angiofibroma underwent removal via the sublabial transnasomaxillary approach. This technique is described in detail. There was neither major operative nor postoperative complication. One patient developed dacryocystitis. Long term follow-up longer than 18 months in 5 patients, showed no recurrence. This technique is useful for removal of angiofibroma because it enables the surgeon to gain extensive exposure of maxillary, eth

Cellular senescence of angiofibroma stroma cells from patients with tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by epilepsy, mental retardation and hamartomatous lesions in multiple organs. It has been shown that the genes responsible for TSC, TSC1 and TSC2, act as tumor suppressors, but the mechanism of hamartomatous growth in several tissues is not completely understood. The TSC hamartomas are essentially benign and they rarely progress to malignant tumors. In this report, we cultured the angiofibroma stroma cells of three adult TSC patients and compared these cells with normal skin fibroblasts for their proliferative cap

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma presenting as a facial swelling. A case report.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign neoplasm occurring almost exclusively in adolescent males. When it is confined to the nasopharynx, surgery is often curative. In 20% of cases, there is intracranial extension, and radiotherapy may be used to avoid the risk of life-threatening haemorrhage. The authors report an unusual case which presented with a swelling of the cheek and an abducens nerve palsy. The lesion extended from the nasopharynx across the pterygomaxillary fissure, as well as intracranially. Radiotherapy was given, and the patient remains disease-free after one year.

Angiofibroma of the maxillary gingiva: a rare case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Angiofibromas are benign fibrovascular neoplasms that rarely involve the oral cavity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old female presented with a painless swelling on the buccal gingiva adjacent to the right maxillary second molar. Examination revealed a solitary, sessile, oval mass measuring 1.5 cm × 1.2 cm × 1.0 cm. The lesion was excised under local anesthesia. Histopathology confirmed an angiofibroma, showing non-keratinized hyperplastic epithelium overlying a fibrous stroma containing numerous newly formed capillaries. Healing was uneventful, with no recurrence at 1 year. CLI

A Rare Association of Pituitary Macroadenoma With Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma: A Case Report.

Pituitary macroadenoma and angiofibroma are two distinct and diverse types of tumors that can develop in different anatomical locations and clinical characteristics and are not typically related to each other in terms of their hormonal or developmental aspects. This case describes an adult male with pituitary macroadenoma with nasal angiofibroma. A 35-year-old male was diagnosed with pituitary macroadenoma and incidentally found to have juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (NPA). The patient underwent a diagnostic workup, including imaging studies and hormonal assays, which confirmed the conco

Angiofibroma of the external auditory canal: a rare case with literature review.

Angiofibromas represent <1% of all head and neck tumors and occur primarily in the nasopharynx. Extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibromas are rarer. Remarkably, only a case of external auditory canal location has been reported. We present a case of an angiofibroma in this unique location in a female who presented with fullness of right ear and hypoacusis for 6 months. The clinical examination found a mass in the right external auditory canal attached to the posterosuperior wall. Preoperative audiometry revealed average right conductive hearing loss of 37.5 dB. A computed tomography scan revealed a ma

Transperineal excision of a sizeable angiofibroma of the ischiorectal fossa. A case report.

Cellular angiofibroma is a recently described rare benign soft-tissue tumor more commonly presenting in middle-aged women, often mimicking malignancy. The vulva is most common location. Complete local excision is the best curative treatment and usually there is no recurrence after surgery. We describe a 49-year-old woman with a painless tumor in the left ischiorectal fossa. It was a random finding in a routine computed tomography (CT) scan after resection of ear melanoma 3 years previously. Ultrasonography showed a solid mass, and further magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested a rhabdomyos

Extranasopharyngeal Angiofibroma Localized in the Nasal Dorsum: A Rare Location for This Tumor.

Although extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma (ENA) is a rare condition, its diagnosis should be considered during differential diagnosis of nasal masses. We report a rare case of ENA originating from the left lateral side of nasal tip. A 43-year-old man with an ENA mass located on the left lateral side of the nasal tip presented to our hospital. The nasal mass caused nasal obstruction and swelling at the nasal tip and was surgically removed. Histopathological examination revealed ENA. The patient is being followed up and remains free of disease. ENAs are rare and differ from nasopharyngeal angiof

A rare case of extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibroma of the septum in a female child.

BACKGROUND: Extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare but distinct clinical entity, different from juvenile angiofibroma. METHODS: This clinical record elucidates the only case of extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibroma arising from the septum in a female child, who presented with epistaxis. RESULTS: The histopathological diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry, and the case was managed surgically with no recurrence. CONCLUSION: In a female paediatric patient presenting with epistaxis, extra-nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (of the inferior turbinate) is a rare albeit important differential
