Exposure to suicide and suicide bereavement among women firefighters: Associated suicidality and psychiatric symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To examine experiences with suicide exposure and bereavement among women firefighters. METHODS: Women firefighters (N = 266, Mage  = 37.64y) completed self-report measures assessing their experiences with suicide exposure, history of suicidality, current psychiatric symptoms, and suicide risk. RESULTS: Three-fourths (74.4%) of participants reported knowing someone who had died by suicide; of these participants, 31.3% reported losing a fellow firefighter to suicide. Exposure to suicide during one's firefighting career was associated with more severe psychiatric symptoms and suicide

Maternal Antenatal Bereavement and Neural Tube Defect in Live-Born Offspring: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal emotional stress during pregnancy has previously been associated with congenital neural malformations, but most studies are based on data collected retrospectively. The objective of our study was to investigate associations between antenatal maternal bereavement due to death of a close relative and neural tube defects (NTDs) in the offspring. METHODS: We performed a register-based cohort study including all live-born children (N = 1,734,190) from 1978-2008. Exposure was bereavement due to loss of a close relative from one year before conception to the end of the first tri

DSM-V diagnostic criteria for bereavement-related disorders in children and adolescents: developmental considerations.

Two bereavement-related disorders are proposed for the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V): Adjustment Disorder Related to Bereavement, to be located in the main body of the text as an official diagnostic entity; and Bereavement-Related Disorder, including a Traumatic Death Specifier, to be located in the Appendix as an invitation for further research. These diagnoses currently do not include developmentally informed criteria, despite the importance of developmental processes in the ways children and adolescents grieve. In this article, we draw up

Social rhythm stability following late-life spousal bereavement: associations with depression and sleep impairment.

The aim of this study was to investigate changes in social rhythm stability and sleep in spousally bereaved subjects (n = 94) and in nonbereaved elderly control subjects (n = 45). Social rhythm stability and activity level were measured with a diary-like instrument, the Social Rhythm Metric (SRM). We observed that spousal bereavement, per se, was not associated with a lower social rhythm stability or activity level except in the presence of a major depressive episode. We also observed an inverse correlation between severity of depression and social rhythm stability, and a positive correlation

A protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial of an online cancer bereavement group.

BACKGROUND: The loss of a loved one to cancer brings unique difficulties that affect the bereavement experience. Mixed evidence exists for the effectiveness of in-person group interventions for bereaved caregivers, with barriers to accessing support including perceived stigmatisation and geographical constraints. Online bereavement interventions offer an accessible means of providing grief support at the individual and group level. Research supports the effectiveness of online groups for those bereaved by cancer although most existing studies have examined peer-led online groups only, while em

Dyadic daily examination of repetitive thought and well-being in bereaved parents.

We aimed to investigate the bidirectional associations of repetitive thought (i.e., rumination, yearning) with individual (grief levels, depressive symptoms) and relational well-being in bereaved parents who lost their child during pregnancy, labor, or afterward. The Response Styles Theory posits a reciprocal link between repetitive thought and well-being. However, past studies provided mixed evidence for this claim for individual well-being, and no study has yet examined this claim for relational well-being. Moreover, reciprocal associations have not been investigated within dyads. In total,

Support Experiences and Wishes of Bereaved Parents After the Loss of Their Child to Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The death of a child has a tremendous impact on parents' lives. The experience of parents who have lost a child to cancer may differ from other bereavement experiences, including other childhood and adulthood causes of death, because of the uncertainty of the prognosis, the aggressive treatment, and the potential for regret about treatment decisions. Bereavement care remains scarce, and effective interventions to meet the diverse needs of parents have not been defined. OBJECTIVE: To provide insights on bereaved parents' experiences, their needs, and wishes of support following t

Predictors of Stigma, Guilt, and Shame among Adults Bereaved by Fatal Overdose.

With the spectacular rise of US overdose deaths, bereavement for these affected families has become a matter of increasing concern. Qualitative research has highlighted the role of stigmatization as well as guilt and shame among this population. However, the magnitude and pre-death predictors of stigmatization, guilt, and shame have yet to be assessed quantitatively. In the current study, we assess the magnitude of stigmatization, guilt, and shame among 115 adults bereaved by overdose by drawing comparisons with 185 adults bereaved by suicide. Results revealed no significant differences regard

Individual counseling in mothers bereaved by pregnancy loss: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The loss of a pregnancy can result in grief, guilt, self-doubt, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Considering the side effects mentioned for mental health and the fact that the symptoms will linger if left untreated and even adversely affect the subsequent pregnancies. The current study was designed to assess the impact of individual counseling on stress, anxiety, and depression in mothers with pregnancy loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study commenced 100 women who experienced pregnancy loss (in Urmia/2018-2019); they were enrolled using convenience sampling and

My Grief App for Prolonged Grief in Bereaved Parents: A Pilot Study.

The death of a child is a devastating experience for most parents. Consequently, bereaved parents are at risk to develop physical and mental health problems, including prolonged grief disorder. Nevertheless, there is a lack of evaluated psychosocial interventions for bereaved parents. The primary aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of the My Grief app for bereaved parents. The secondary aim was to evaluate the potential reduction of symptoms of prolonged grief, depression and post-traumatic stress, and cognitive-behavioral processes proposed to prolong grief reactions. The study w

Grief Reactions of Potential Organ Donors' Bereaved Relatives: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Most family members of potential organ donors experience the death of their relative in an intensive care unit. While under an emotional burden, bereaved relatives must make a decision that will affect the life of other patients. A better understanding of grief within the context of organ donation will help intensive care unit staff better support families during this process. OBJECTIVES: To empirically describe the emotional reactions of potential organ donors' family members facing a loved one's death and analyze the relationship of these reactions to factors that occur in the p

The effect of metoprolol and aspirin on cardiovascular risk in bereavement: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease; however, no reports exist of interventions to reduce risk. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 85 recently bereaved participants, we determined whether β-blocker (metoprolol 25 mg) and aspirin (100 mg) reduce cardiovascular risk markers and anxiety, without adversely affecting bereavement intensity. METHODS: Participants were spouses (n = 73) or parents (n = 12) of deceased from 5 hospitals in Sydney, Australia, 55 females, 30 males, aged 66.1 ± 9.4 years. After assessment within 2 w

Bereaved Family Members' Perceptions of the Distressing Symptoms of Terminal Patients With Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Few data are available on bereaved family members' perspective on the frequency of symptoms and degree of distress among terminal patients with cancer. METHODS: We sent a questionnaire to 1472 bereaved family members of terminal patients with cancer in 20 general hospitals. The questionnaire asked them (1) to indicate which symptoms the patients had, (2) to rate on a 4-point scale the extent to which the symptom was distressing, as follows: 1 = not distressing, 2 = slightly distressing, 3 = quite distressing, and 4 = very distressing at the point of 2 weeks before the patient had

Stigmatization and receptivity to mental health services among recently bereaved adults.

Severe grief symptoms, treatment receptivity, attitudes about grief, and stigmatization concerns were assessed in a community-based sample of 135 widowed participants in the Yale Bereavement Study. There was a statistically significant association between the severity of grief symptoms and reported negative reactions from friends and family members. However, more than 90% of the respondents with complicated grief, a severe grief disorder, reported that they would be relieved to know that having such a diagnosis was indicative of a recognizable psychiatric condition, and 100% reported that they

Coming to terms with grief and loss. Can skills for dealing with bereavement be learned?

To provide optimum patient care, physicians often need to actively work with persons who experience an acute loss or terminal illness. Physicians who are aware of and open to the issues involved in the grief process are likely to maintain healthier lives and be more available to their patients and their patients' loved ones at times of loss. However, physicians must also have a way to process the losses they themselves face. Thus, self-care is an important aspect of grieving for both physician and patients. Although the experience of loss is often painful and emotionally charged, it can provid

Life-Course Timing of Family Bereavement and Cognitive Impairment in Midlife to Later Life.

Objectives. To examine whether the timing of family member deaths across the life course is associated with cognitive impairment and dementia in midlife to later life. Methods. Using 20 years of longitudinal data (2000-2020) from the US Health and Retirement Study and competing risks models, we examined how age at the time of a parent's, child's, or spouse's death is associated with the onset of mid-to-later-life cognitive impairment with or without dementia. Results. Among individuals who experienced family member deaths, losses occurring at younger ages were associated with higher risks of c
