While normal human body temperature is often cited as 36.1-37.2 °C, there is high-quality evidence demonstrating that older adults typically have lower baseline body temperatures. In contrast to hypothermia (< 35 °C) which is well recognized as a medical emergency, there is emerging evidence that low body temperature (35.0-36.0 °C) may predict poor outcomes in the geriatric population. This narrative review synthesizes the current literature on the association between low body temperature in adults aged ≥ 65 years and common geriatric co-morbidities. Across observational and cohort studies, lo

Minimising suffering is an ethical and legal requirement in animal research. This is particularly relevant for research on animal models of sepsis and septic shock, which show rapid progression towards severe stages and death. Specific and reliable criteria signalling non-recovery points can be used as humane endpoints, beyond which a study cannot be allowed to progress, thus preventing avoidable suffering. Body temperature is a key indicator for assessing animal health and welfare and has been suggested to have potential for monitoring the status of mouse models of sepsis. In this study, we m

The skeletal muscle plays a key role in thermogenesis and energy homeostasis in endotherms. Therefore, reduced skeletal muscle mass and function are closely associated with health disorders such as obesity and hypothermia. In humans, inactivity and nutritional deficiencies can lead to skeletal muscle atrophy. However, hibernating mammals, which can greatly suppress their metabolic rate, can maintain significant skeletal muscle mass even during prolonged periods of inactivity and nutritional restriction. This review focuses on how skeletal muscle contributes to maintaining body temperature as t

Although evidence-based practices exist for preventing hypothermia in patients during surgery, few studies have focused on this concern in postoperative patients. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the most challenging issues experienced by surgical ward nurses while managing the body temperature of adult surgical patients. To address this research gap, this study used a qualitative descriptive design to document barriers to body temperature management as reported by a sample of 16 perioperative nurses. The semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were digitally recorded, transcr

OBJECTIVE: To determine if lower ambient temperatures in computed tomography (CT) rooms contribute to accidental hypothermia (≤35°C) in trauma patients.
METHODS: Prospective, observational study of trauma patients undergoing a CT scan at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
RESULTS: Among a cohort of 81 trauma patients, 54 met level 1 call-out criteria. Mean time in CT was 11 min. Longer time spent in CT contributes to greater decrease in body temperature (∆T/t = -0.1483°C/min, P = 0.0026).
CONCLUSION: Increasing time spent in CT leads to a decrease in body temperature in trauma patients. Clinician

Spending the winter in northern climes with short days and cold ambient temperatures (Ta) can be energetically challenging for small birds that have high metabolic and heat loss rates. Hence, maintaining body temperature (Tb) in Ta below thermoneutrality can be energetically costly for a small bird. We still know little about how increased heat production below thermoneutrality affects the level at which Tb is maintained, and if these patterns are age specific. To test this, we measured subcutaneous body temperature (Ts) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) simultaneously in blue tits (Cyanistes c

Global warming increasingly challenges thermoregulation in endothermic animals, particularly in hot and dry environments where low water availability and high temperature increase the risk of hyperthermia. In birds, un-feathered body parts such as the head and bill work as 'thermal windows', because heat flux is higher compared to more insulated body regions. We studied how such structures were used in different thermal environments, and if heat flux properties change with time in a given temperature. We acclimated zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) to two different ambient temperatures, 'col

Previous studies reported that low temperatures result in increases in both cell size and body size in ectotherms that may explain patterns of geographic variation of their body size across latitudinal ranges. Also, polyploidy showed the same effect on body size in invertebrates. In vertebrates, despite their having larger cells, no clear effect of polyploidy on body size has been found. This article presents the relationship between temperature, cell size, growth rate, and body size in diploid and polyploid hybridogenetic frog Pelophylax esculentus reared as tadpoles at 19° and 24°C. The size

Narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) is a sleep disorder caused by the loss of the hypothalamic neurons producing hypocretin. The clinical hallmarks of the disease are excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, other rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phenomena, and a fragmented wake-sleep cycle. Experimental data suggest that the hypocretin system is involved primarily in the circadian timing of sleep and wakefulness but also in the control of other biological functions such as thermoregulation. The object of this study was to determine the effects of the hypocretin deficit and of the wake-sleep cycle fr

CONTEXT: Impaired vigilance and sleepiness are two majordaily complaints of patients with narcolepsy. We previously showed their sleepiness to be correlated to an abnormally regulated skin temperature, i.e., increased distal skin temperature compared with proximal skin temperature.
OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to investigate a possible causal contribution of skin temperature disturbances to impairments in the ability to maintain vigilance and wakefulness in narcolepsy.
DESIGN: In a modified constant routine protocol, the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) and the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MW

In the present study, diurnal rhythm and regulation of body temperature were monitored during and several weeks following pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD group, n=8) or pairfeeding (control group, n=9). A significant decline of core body temperature and a disruption of its diurnal rhythm were observed at varying stages of PTD treatment. Following thiamine administration and return to thiamine-fortified chow, body temperature continued to fall and several days transpired before body temperature and its diurnal rhythm were returned to normal. When exposed to warm and cold environme

A young male survived hyperpyrexia (42.9 degrees C) following MDMA ("Ecstasy") ingestion. He developed convulsions, rhabdomyolysis, metabolic acidosis, and respiratory failure. This was successfully managed by assisted ventilation, aggressive fluid therapy, and the early administration of dantrolene, in addition to cooling measures. This is the first report of a survivor with such a severe hyperpyrexia.

It is generally believed that the effectiveness of salicylates, such as aspirin (ASP), is restricted to the lowering of the body temperature (BT) previously elevated by pyrogens and that salicylates have no effect on normal BT. We present here evidences which demonstrate that ASP does lower the normal BT of mice kept in a 24 degrees C environment. Male ICR mice, housed under a light-dark cycle (LD 12:12h) at a room temperature of 24 +/- 1 degree C and a humidity of 60 +/- 10% with food and water ad libitum, received intraperitoneal injections of ASP 25, 100 and 200 mg.kg-1. We examined the role of fever as a host defense in experimental pneumococcal meningitis in rabbits. Twelve hours after intracisternal inoculation of an encapsulated type 3 Streptococcus pneumoniae strain, body temperature was manipulated by using two different anesthetic drugs: pentobarbital, which did not affect temperature, and urethane, which mitigated the febrile response to infection. Growth rates of pneumococci in cerebrospinal fluid were dramatically influenced by modification of the febrile response. Rabbits whose fever was not suppressed had mean bacterial doubling times of 2.76 +/- 1

In mice, changes of body temperature and concentration of lactic acid in the blood were studied after three modes of barochamber hypoxia (altitude 8000 m) at the temperatures +10, +20 and +36 degrees C. The greatest drop of body temperature occurred at +10 degrees C, the least one at +36 degrees C. The lactic acid concentration was the greatest (up to 3.6 mM/l) at 2-min ascend and 2-min descend as well as at 2-min ascend, 15-min "altitude", 2-min descend, the temperatures being +20 and +36 degrees C. At 15-time 2-min ascend-descend, the concentration was the least (no more than 2 mM/l). Mechan

Prolonged glucocorticoid exposure induces skeletal muscle atrophy through suppression of protein synthesis and activation of catabolic signalling pathways. Although exercise attenuates glucocorticoid-induced muscle loss, whether exercise-induced increases in body temperature contribute remains unclear. In this study, we examined whether exercise in different thermal conditions modulates skeletal muscle atrophy and intracellular signalling during glucocorticoid exposure. Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 48) were assigned to six groups: control (CON), dexamethasone-treated (DEX), cold exercise (∼

Homeotherms maintain a steady body temperature through thermoregulation, a process critical for survival during fasting, in which the brain has to defend energy-costly body temperature while reducing energy expenditure to conserve energy reserve; however, the neural basis for defending body temperature remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that AgRP neuron lesion led to lethality during time-restricted feeding but no obvious impact on HFD-induced obesity or obesity-reducing responses to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonism. The lesion disrupted adaptive feeding behaviors during time-restr
