In a comparative study, 18 patients presenting with progressive mental deterioration were investigated by means of radio-isotopic cisternography and by computerized axial tomography (CAT) in order to establish morphological criteria for CAT which would enable malresorptive hydrocephalus and atrophic hydrocephalus to be differentiated. To determine the respiratory effects of inhibiting carbonic anhydrase in brain tissue, we infused acetazolamide (ACZ) into the cisterna magna in anesthetized rats. Three concentrations, 4.5, 45 and 450 microM in artificial cerebrospinal fluid, were infused continuously at 2 microliter/min for 20 min and the responses to CO2 rebreathing trials were compared to sham CSF infusions without ACZ. The recently introduced rabbit blood shunt subarachnoid haemorrhage model is based on the two standard procedures of subclavian artery cannulation and transcutaneous cisterna magna puncture. Oculoectodermal syndrome (OMIM 600268) is rare and characterized by aplasia cutis congenita, epibulbar dermoids, and other abnormalities. We report herein on a newly recognized patient with oculoectodermal syndrome, which is the 19th reported patient with OES. The boy aged six years demonstrated a broad clinical spectrum of this condition, including aplasia cutis congenita, epibulbar dermoids, hyperkeratotic papule, mildly enlarged cisterna magna, and an enlarged fluid space in the quadrigeminal cistern, suggesting a cyst. We report 2 cases of arachnoid cysts, one with a retrocerebellar and the other with a left temporal localization, in which immunohistochemical studies had been conducted. The results of the immunohistochemistry on the presence of carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and of the scanning- and transmission electron microscopy revealed the cyst lining to be identical to subdural neurothelium. Intravenous enzyme replacement therapy with iduronate-2-sulfatase is an approved treatment for Hunter syndrome, however, conventional intravenous delivery cannot treat the neurologic manifestations of the disease due to its limited central nervous system penetration. Intrathecal administration of iduronate-2-sulfatase for delivery to the central nervous system is currently under investigation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of idursulfase in the central nervous system of cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fasicularis) after intravenous and intrathecal administration.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in the currents of voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs) in smooth muscle cells of basilar artery in a rabbit model of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
METHODS: New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into five groups: sham (C), normal (N), 24 hours (S1), 48 hours (S2) and 72 hours (S3) after SAH. Non-heparinized autologous arterial blood (1 ml/kg) was injected into the cisterna magna to create SAH after intravenous anesthesia, and 1 ml/kg of saline was injected into cisterna magna in the sham group.
