Loneliness Is Associated with Depressive Affect, But Not with Most Other Symptoms of Depression in Community-Dwelling Individuals: A Network Analysis.

There is a strong relationship between loneliness and depression, but depression is a heterogeneous disorder. We examined the profile of depressive symptoms most strongly related to loneliness. Study participants were 2007 community-dwelling individuals (median age 31 years, 70.4% women) who completed an online survey on loneliness (single-item question: "never", "sometimes", "often"), depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) and demographics. The relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms was evaluated with linear regression and network analyses. The prevalence of lon

A network approach to investigating the key microbes and stability of gut microbial communities in a mouse neuropathic pain model.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic pain is an abnormally increased sensitivity to pain, especially from mechanical or thermal stimuli. To date, the current pharmacological treatments for neuropathic pain are still unsatisfactory. The gut microbiota reportedly plays important roles in inducing neuropathic pain, so probiotics have also been used to treat it. However, the underlying questions around the interactions in and stability of the gut microbiota in a spared nerve injury-induced neuropathic pain model and the key microbes (i.e., the microbes that play critical roles) involved have not been answered.

Unravelling the importance of the eukaryotic and bacterial communities and their relationship with Legionella spp. ecology in cooling towers: a complex network.

BACKGROUND: Cooling towers are a major source of large community-associated outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease, a severe pneumonia. This disease is contracted when inhaling aerosols that are contaminated with bacteria from the genus Legionella, most importantly Legionella pneumophila. How cooling towers support the growth of this bacterium is still not well understood. As Legionella species are intracellular parasites of protozoa, it is assumed that protozoan community in cooling towers play an important role in Legionella ecology and outbreaks. However, the exact mechanism of how the eukaryot

The left middle temporal gyrus in the middle of an impaired social-affective communication network in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on patients diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) reported changed patterns of the resting-state functional connectivity network (rs-FCN) between the prefrontal cortices and other prefrontal, amygdalar or striatal regions. Using a graph theory approach, this study explored the modularity-based community profile and patterns of inter-/intra-modular communication for the rs-FCN in SAD. METHODS: In total, for 28 SAD patients and 27 healthy controls (HC), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were acquired in resting-state and subjected to a graph t

Social network assessment in community-dwelling older persons: results from a study of three European populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In clinical practice, the status of living alone is often used as the only measure describing an older person's social network. We evaluated whether additional use of a brief social network measure provides relevant additional information in relation to social support and engagement. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of 6982 community- dwelling adults 65 years or older living in London, UK; Hamburg, Germany; and Solothurn, Switzerland. Data were collected using the self-administered multidimensional Health Risk Appraisal Questionnaire. Multivariate models were used to analy

Serum thyrotropin measurements in the community: five-year follow-up in a large network of primary care physicians.

BACKGROUND: Subclinical thyroid disease is common; however, screening recommendations using serum thyrotropin (TSH) level determinations are controversial. METHODS: To study the use of serum TSH by primary care physicians and define populations at risk for having an abnormal TSH level at follow-up, based on initial TSH levels, we conducted an observational study of a large health care database in the setting of a health management organization. All outpatients without thyroid disease or pregnancy or taking medication that may alter thyroid function in whom the TSH level was measured in 2002 a

Structure aware graph community cluster pruning for efficient neural network compression in Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

Deep neural networks in medical and edge environments often face computational and memory constraints, which necessitate effective model compression. Neural network pruning is a widely used solution, but conventional methods often rely on magnitude-based or random criteria that can remove entire functional groups of neurons and reduce model performance. This study introduces Graph-Community Cluster Pruning (GCCP), a structured pruning framework that constructs neuron activation similarity graphs and employs Louvain community detection to identify functionally cohesive groups. Within each commu

Properties of free-living and particle-attached potentially pathogenic bacterial communities in a hypereutrophic urban river network.

Pathogenic bacteria are ubiquitously detected in various natural and artificial water systems, posing potential threats to public health and safety. To elucidate the structure of potentially pathogenic bacterial communities and their spatio-temporal patterns, a two-year study examined four contrasting land-use/land-cover types (urban, industrial, agricultural, natural forest) in a hypereutrophic urban river network of eastern China. Three predominant potentially pathogenic species appeared in both the particle-attached (PA) and free-living (FL) bacterial communities: Flavobacterium succinicans

Mitochondrial-centric regulatory networks in MASLD: Integrating quality control, organelle interactions, and gut-liver communication.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is closely related to liver mitochondrial dysfunction, which is driven not as an isolated event but by a self-amplifying injury loop involving impaired intrinsic quality control, aberrant organelle crosstalk, and dysregulated gut-liver signaling. This review summarizes findings in three interconnected regulatory layers: (1) intrinsic mitochondrial quality control (MQC) (PINK1/Parkin- and BNIP3/NIX-mediated mitophagy, Drp1/Mfn-driven dynamics, and chaperone/protease-maintained proteostasis); (2) organelle interactions (ER-mitochon

Bidirectional brain-heart communication in coronary heart disease: from coronary plaques to central autonomic networks.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is commonly conceptualized as a disorder of atherosclerotic plaque burden, myocardial oxygen supply-demand mismatch and thrombosis. This framework remains indispensable, yet it does not fully explain stress-induced ischemia, persistent symptoms in the absence of obstructive lesions, or neuropsychiatric and cognitive sequelae after acute coronary events. Evidence increasingly indicates that CHD is embedded in a bidirectional brain-heart axis in which central autonomic, neuroendocrine, immune, vascular, metabolic, sleep-circadian and extracellular vesicle-mediated si

Understanding Social Support and Opinion Leaders in a Tuberculosis-Related Online Community in China: Content and Network Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases. Yet, despite the growing role of online health communities (OHCs) as key sources of social support, research on TB-related online communities remains scarce. Network analysis has been increasingly used to study OHCs and identify opinion leaders (OLs), offering a valuable approach to advancing knowledge about TB-related online communities. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the types of social support and the influence of OLs in a prominent TB-related online forum in China, with a particular focus on its curate

Learning the therapeutic targets of acute myeloid leukemia through multiscale human interactome network and community analysis.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is caused by proliferation of mutated myeloid progenitor cells. The standard chemotherapy regimen does not efficiently cause remission as there is a high relapse rate. Resistance acquired by leukemic stem cells is suggested to be one of the root causes of relapse. Therefore, there is an urgency to develop new drugs for therapy. Repurposing approved drugs for AML can provide a cost-friendly, time-efficient, and affordable alternative. The multiscale interactome network is a computational tool that can identify potential therapeutic candidates by comparing mechanisms
