Diagnosis and clinical significance of parainfluenza virus infections in children.

The diagnosis and clinical features of parainfluenza virus infections are described in 151 children admitted to hospital over a 2-year period. Immunofluorescence was the most sensitive method of laboratory diagnosis, while virus isolation in tissue culture was more often achieved from nasopharyngeal secretions than from cough/nasal swabs. Parainfluenza viruses were responsible for approximately 9% of 1603 acute respiratory admissions. Croup was the commonest of the wide range of respiratory illnesses associated with these infections; in a series of 132 children with croup, a parainfluenza viru

Pilot Videodermoscopic Examination of Hair and Skin in Arabian Mare Horses During the Winter Season.

Videodermoscopy is a novel, noninvasive technique used to examine the appearance of skin and its adnexa. The aim of this study was to assess specific dermoscopic parameters in Arabian purebred mares in particular areas of the body during the winter season. The study was performed in the winter season. Videodermoscopic evaluations of the hair and skin were performed over seven areas of the body: the forehead, mane, neck, chest, flank, croup, and tail. Twenty-one healthy, non-breeding Arabian mares aged 3 to 21 years were selected for the study. The Video-Dermatoscope Vidix 7 (Medici Medical SRL

Two cases of influenza with impaired ocular movement.

Complications of influenza include respiratory disorders (pneumonia, bronchitis and croup) and occasionally myocarditis, myositis, encephalitis, encephalopathy and Reye's syndrome, which may be life-threatening and cause various sequelae. We report two patients who developed unusual complications of influenza infection: one had ptosis and impaired ocular movement, and the other suffered from Guillain-Barré syndrome with paralysis of the extraocular muscles.

The prevalence of airway problems in children with Down's syndrome.

AIM: Airway disorders are common in children with Down's syndrome. We report the findings on airway endoscopy in a birth cohort of children from a well-defined geographical area, in order to estimate true population prevalence of airway problems in children with Down's syndrome. METHOD: Retrospective case note review over a 20-year period between 1993 and 2013 for all children in Greater Glasgow born with Down's syndrome, identified through the hearing surveillance programme. All children undergoing airway endoscopy under general anaesthesia for investigation of potential airway symptoms (str

[Management of children in respiratory distress].

Conditioning in respiratory distress in childhood requires a rapid evaluation of severity based on clinical examination in order to immediately start helpful care to improve respiratory status. Oximetry measurement is now integrated in this initial evaluation determining oxygen therapy. Etiologic orientation, quick and clinic, is precised by family questions. Adapted therapeutic will begin and we know that most frequently etiologies are: croup, bronchiolitis and asthma attack.

Upper Airway Obstruction in Children.

Children with upper airway obstruction are both unique and variable in their presentation and management, often posing a challenge to the pediatrician. Several anatomical and physiologic peculiarities make a child vulnerable to develop an obstruction of upper airways. The characteristic finding in upper airway obstruction is stridor-inspiratory, biphasic or expiratory. The etiologies vary widely throughout the age groups and according to the mode of presentation. The approach starts with suspicion, mandates careful clinical evaluation of the degree of obstruction and many a times emergency mea

An Unusual Cause for Intermittent Stridor and Dysphagia in an Infant.

Stridor is a common presenting symptom in young children and is produced by turbulent flow through the upper airway or trachea. In children under 12 months of age, stridor is commonly caused by laryngomalacia, tracheomalacia, croup, airway foreign body, and/or retropharyngeal abscess. In atypical presentations of stridor, soft tissue neck radiographs can be helpful to determine the underlying etiology. Occasionally, children will require bronchoscopy to determine the etiology and treatment.

[Heliox in pediatrics].

Heliox is composed of oxygen and helium and its low specific gravity allows a modification of the gas flow within the airway. Breathing heliox favors a laminar flow and therefore decreases the work of breathing. Its usefulness in the child is established in croup or in post-extubation stridor. It can be considered if conventional treatment fails to improve the child's breathing pattern. Its major goal is to avoid invasive manoeuvers as much as possible.

Infant health effects of a nurse-community health worker home visitation programme: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Home visiting is supported as a way to improve child health and development. Home visiting has been usually provided by nurses or community health workers (CHWs). Few studies compared the child health advantages of a nurse-CHW team approach over nurse prenatal and postnatal home visiting. METHODS: A randomized trial was conducted with Medicaid-insured pregnant women in Kent County, Michigan. Pregnant women were assigned to a team intervention including nurse-CHW home visitation, or standard community care (CC) including nurse home visitation. Morbidity was assessed in 530 infants

Etiology of acute lower respiratory tract infection in children at Srinagarind Hospital, Khon Kaen, Thailand.

We investigated the etiology of acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) in children under 5 admitted to Srinagarind Hospital. The causative bacteria and viruses were determined by hemoculture and viral isolation from blood and nasopharyngeal aspirate samples. Antigens of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Chlamydia trachomatis were detected using EIA. The 74 children less than 5 years of age with ALRI enrolled in our study were diagnosed with pneumonia (75.7%), croup (16.2%), and bronchiolitis (8.1%), respectively. Examination of blood or nasopharyngeal aspirate revealed viral or bacterial

Examining the Utility of Lateral Neck X-Rays in Pediatric Otolaryngology.

OBJECTIVE: The utility of lateral neck X-rays is unclear in pediatric otolaryngology. Past research showed that lateral neck X-ray did not change treatment decisions for children with suspected foreign body aspiration. This study examines the utility of lateral neck X-ray for patients also receiving otolaryngology consults for any indication. METHODS: This is a retrospective chart review of pediatric patients between 2012 and 2022 who received a lateral neck X-ray for any indication and an otolaryngology consultation at a tertiary pediatric hospital. X-ray indication, diagnosis, and influence

Respiratory distress.

Preparation for pediatric pulmonary emergencies in the office setting includes adequate training for all medical staff, properly sized and working equipment, and medications to help alleviate respiratory distress when indicated. Status asthmaticus, viral bronchiolitis, and croup account for the vast majority of respiratory emergencies encountered in the pediatric office setting. Timely application of proven approaches to assessment and treatment of these illnesses can prevent hospitalization, decrease length of hospitalizations, and save lives.

Pediatric otolaryngologic emergencies.

Anesthesiologists are often consulted to help in the management of pediatric otolaryngologic emergencies. These include airway obstruction in children suffering from acute epiglottitis and croup. Surgical otolaryngologic emergencies such as foreign body aspiration, post-tonsillectomy bleeding, obstructive laryngeal papillomatosis, peritonsillar abscess, and laryngeal trauma can be life threatening. The pathophysiology, clinical course, and anesthetic management of these conditions are addressed with special emphasis on the details of airway management in each case.

Differential diagnosis of upper airway disease in children.

Upper airway disease in childhood is very common and can be life-threatening. It is important to differentiate between the various causes of airway obstruction in children. A croupy cough can signal acute laryngotracheobronchitis (croup), acute epiglottitis, or aspiration of a foreign body. The problem must be quickly and accurately diagnosed, followed by appropriate management and careful monitoring. Morbidity and mortality can be high in certain instances. Therefore, the physician must know the indications for hospitalization.

A Rare Case of a Vocal Cord Foreign Body in an Infant: A Case Report.

A foreign body (FB) is an object or item that is foreign to the area in which it is found. FB in the airway, accompanied by the esophagus, is a common overnight emergency in pediatric otolaryngology. Here we report a case of a healthy 11-month-old girl who presented in the emergency room with stridor and a weak cry. The patient was admitted as a case of croup (laryngotracheobronchitis) and treated with multiple antibiotics for more than five days but showed no improvement, then consulted the ear, nose, and throat team (ENT).
