The digital workflow to fabricate an integrated hollow bulb obturator prosthesis with a metal framework for a patient with soft palate defect is described. The framework was digitally designed with an open lattice denture base connector to facilitate the assembly of the hollow bulb obturator and printed with titanium. A functional impression of the palatopharyngeal area was made, and an integrated 3-dimensional (3D) cast was obtained by aligning the data of the functional impression to the preliminary intraoral scan data. The hollow bulb obturator and a palatal cover were designed based on the

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to identify failures and to assess rate for fixed partial dentures constructed 20 years earlier by general practitioners in Sweden.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The original group consisted of 164 patients who had received prosthodontic treatment in 1974 comprising fixed partial dentures with at least five units. They had all been selected at random from the files of the Swedish Federal Dental Insurance Register. Twenty years later, 98 of them could be located and 72 of them agreed to participate in a clinical examination. The majority of drop-outs of the or

BACKGROUND: Total tooth loss (edentulism) can be a debilitating condition, impacting on ability to chew, speak and interact with others. The most common treatment is with complete removable dentures, which may be successful, but in the lower jaw, bone resorption that worsens over time makes denture-wearing difficult. Two dental implants in the mandible to retain the lower denture has been advocated as the gold standard of treatment, but has not been universally provided due largely to financial constraints and also patient fear. Mini implants (MI) are cheaper and less invasive than conventiona

Background: Tooth loss remains a major clinical challenge, affecting mastication, speech, facial aesthetics, and oral health-related quality of life. Prosthetic rehabilitation must therefore balance functional demands, biological limitations, patient preferences, maintenance capacity, and cost. Implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) have emerged as a practical alternative to conventional removable partial dentures (RPDs) and full-arch fixed implant prostheses, particularly in distal-extension cases where conventional RPDs often demonstrate greater displacement and unfavorable str

PURPOSE: The double system of support, in which the distal-extension removable partial denture adapts, causes inadequate stress around abutment teeth, increasing the possibility of unequal bone resorption. Several ways to reduce or more adequately distribute the stress between abutment teeth and residual ridges have been reported; however, there are no definitive answers to the problem. The purpose of this study was to analyze, by means of photoelasticity, the most favorable stress distribution using three retainers: T bar, rest, proximal plate, I bar (RPI), and circumferential with mesialized

OBJECTIVES: Mini implant retained overdentures have been treated in edentulous patients with promising long-term results. However, various attachment systems in this process remain insufficiently investigated. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of the ball and other attachments used in mini-implant overdentures. Marginal bone loss, bite force, implant survival rate, prosthetic maintenance, and complications were assessed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases until 25th February 2025. T

BACKGROUND: Attachment material is one of the contributing factors to the degree of wear of the attachment components in mandibular implant-retained overdentures. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the wear behavior of 2 different attachment systems of dissimilar materials in mandibular implant-retained overdentures by qualitative and quantitative methods.
METHODS: Two attachment systems of different materials were utilized (n = 16); Titach (Dental Evolutions Inc, Beverly Hills, CA, USA) with a titanium-to-titanium interface and Locator R-Tx (Zest Anchors Inc, Escondido, CA, US

OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence of prosthodontic maintenance events and complications during 4 years of follow-up after mandibular overdenture treatment with one or two implants.
METHODS: Participants received one or two implants inserted in the midline (1-IOD group) or the lateral incisor-canine area bilaterally (2-IOD group). Implants were loaded with an early loading protocol after 3 weeks. Programmed recall visits were scheduled at the 6-, 12-, 36-, and 48-month follow-ups and nonprogrammed visits in case of prosthodontic complaints. The type of maintenance was registered, and the fina

Removable maxillary prostheses (n = 31) rigidly retained on either a one-piece anteriorly located milled bar fixed on four implants located in the anterior maxillary region (group 1, n = 15) or on two bilaterally placed milled bars fixed on six to eight implants located in the posterior maxillary region (group 2, n = 16) were evaluated for prosthodontic maintenance and the calculated bar-generated supporting area. Comparisons of the incidence of prosthodontic maintenance and the supporting area generated by the bars did not differ between groups. Evident advantages were noted for the anterior

PURPOSE: We investigated and compared the stress distribution within one- and two-piece mini-implants for overdentures with three different attachments (ball, Locator, and magnet) and two different diameters using three-dimensional finite element (3D FE) analysis and a monotonic bending test. The goal was to identify the most beneficial implant attachment system design for mini-implant overdentures with a lower risk of implant fracture.
METHODS: Twelve 3D FE models simulating a mandible segment with one- and two-piece mini-implants with different attachment systems, diameters, and overdenture

BACKGROUND: Fractures in mandibular implant-retained overdentures are a common complication. However, little is known on the related risk factors and outcome differences when using two conventional diameter or two mini implants.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was first, to evaluate the required maintenance and complications with the overdentures and second, to analyze risk factors for overdenture fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study was conducted in edentulous patients with complete dentures. Patients received either two conventional (4.1 mm in diameter) and two mini (2.9

The goal of modern implant dentistry is to return patients to oral health in a rapid and predictable fashion, following a diagnostically driven treatment plan. If only a limited number of implants can be placed, or some fail and the prosthetic phase of implant dentistry is chosen to complete the patient's treatment, the final outcome may result in partial patient satisfaction and is commonly referred to as a "compromise." Previous All-on-4 implant treatment for the patient presented here resulted in a compromise, with an inadequate support system for the mandibular prosthesis and a maxillary c

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: There is little information as to how the number and distribution of implants affect the amount of load transmitted to the palate in implant-retained maxillary overdentures.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the number and distribution of dental implants on the load transmitted to the palate.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eight implant analogues were placed in a replica of an average sized edentulous maxilla corresponding to the position of canines, first and second premolars, and first molars. The anteroposterior distance between the centers of i

The presence of a large palatal or maxillary defect after partial or total maxillectomy for tumor, trauma or congenital deformation poses a challenge to prosthodontists, particularly when the use of an implant cannot be considered. This case report described the use of an air valve in a hollow silicone obturator to manufacture an inflatable obturator that could be extended further into undercut area to retain itself. The inflatable obturator exhibited adequate retention, stability and border sealing, thereby improving the masticatory, pronunciation and swallowing functions of patients. It may b

Although porcelain and zirconium oxide might be used for fixed partial dental prostheses instead of conventional dental metals in the near future, removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks will probably continue to be cast with biocompatible metals. Commercially pure (CP) titanium has appropriate mechanical properties, it is lightweight (low density) compared with conventional dental alloys, and has outstanding biocompatibility that prevents metal allergic reactions. This literature review describes the laboratory conditions needed for fabricating titanium frameworks and the present status of

A 41-year-old man with cleft palate presented with a wide dehiscence and missing teeth. Six implants had been placed for fabrication of an overdenture, which was unsatisfactory. A bar was waxed and cast for connection to the implants; precision attachments were placed laterally for retention. A fixed partial denture was fabricated, and milled crowns were fabricated at the molar region to provide a guiding plane for insertion of a removable palatal obturator. Good swallowing and speech outcomes were achieved. This technique provided functional and esthetic benefits, enhanced oral hygiene, and i

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Tooth-to-implant-supported fixed partial dentures (TI-FPDs) are a valuable treatment option for the shortened dental arch. For naturally healthy abutment teeth or abutment teeth with small restorations, inlays or adhesive wings present - as opposed to complete crowns - minimally invasive FPD retainer elements. Data on TI-FPDs with minimally invasive retainer designs are sparse.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare test forces correlating with fracture (ultimate load, Fu) or formation of initial damage (force at first damage, F1d) and the failure mod
