Accuracy of Diagnostic Tests for Schistosoma mansoni Infection in Asymptomatic Eritrean Refugees: Serology and Point-of-Care Circulating Cathodic Antigen Against Stool Microscopy.

BACKGROUND: The unprecedented increase in number of African refugees arriving in Europe is confronting clinicians and general practitioners with the question of whether or not and how to screen migrants from endemic regions for Schistosoma mansoni infection. METHODS: We assessed the accuracy of 3 different diagnostic tests for S. mansoni infection (stool microscopy [samples prepared by sedimentation technique], serology, and point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen [POC-CCA] urine cassette test) in 107 newly arrived asymptomatic Eritrean refugees in Switzerland. RESULT: Sixty-three study p

Performance of the point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (POC-CCA) urine cassette test for follow-up after treatment of S. mansoni infection in Eritrean refugees.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (POC-CCA) urine cassette testing has become a popular approach to screen for Schistosoma infection. Since the test is also increasingly used for following-up of treatment success, we assessed the assay's diagnostic accuracy after praziquantel treatment of S. mansoni infection among Eritrean refugees in Switzerland. METHODS: In our preceding study, 107 asymptomatic Eritrean refugees in Switzerland were screened for schistosomiasis by stool microscopy, serology, and POC-CCA urine testing. Individuals screened positive by any method were tre

Local variability in Pfhrp2 and Pfhrp3 gene deletions prevalence: Approaches, estimation methods, and reporting - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the widely used antigen-based malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) in sub-Saharan Africa primarily detect Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (PfHRP2). However, their diagnostic accuracy is being compromised by the increasing report of evolving parasite strains with deletion of pfhrp2 and pfhrp3 genes in malaria endemic regions. Therefore, elucidating local heterogeneity and addressing methodological variability are critical for guiding diagnostic strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed and Google Scholar for studies published be

Artemisinin-resistant malaria.

SUMMARYThe artemisinin antimalarials are the cornerstone of current malaria treatment. The development of artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum poses a major threat to malaria control and elimination. Recognized first in the Greater Mekong subregion of Southeast Asia nearly 20 years ago, artemisinin resistance has now been documented in Guyana, South America, in Papua New Guinea, and most recently, it has emerged de novo in East Africa (Rwanda, Uganda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and eastern DRC) where it has now become firmly established. Artemisinin resistance is asso

Sexual maltreatment of unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors from the Horn of Africa: a mixed method study focusing on vulnerability and prevention.

OBJECTIVES: The study described in this paper sought to identify the social, cultural, and political factors that effect African unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors' (UASM) vulnerability to sexual maltreatment in England. It aimed to illuminate how child protection measures could be strengthened for this highly marginalized group. METHODS: A mixed method approach was used. Former UASM from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia who had been sexually maltreated in the UK were interviewed in-depth. Prior to the interviews they all completed a questionnaire which captured their biographical details as we

The interlinked crisis: pharmaceutical pollution as a driver of antimicrobial resistance in East Africa: an urgent call for ecopharmacovigilance and one health approach.

Pharmaceutical pollution is a growing environmental and public health issue in East Africa. It is fueled by rapid population growth, increased pharmaceutical consumption, insufficient wastewater treatment, and pharmaceutical uses. Leftover pharmaceuticals enter into water and land ecosystems through human and animal waste, hospital and industry discharges, and inadequate waste management practices. These pollutants present ecological dangers and significantly contribute to the rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), posing a threat to both the environment and public health. This nar

Evaluation of vaccine immunity against tetanus, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella and varicella, in migrant adolescents aged 13 to 18 years arriving in Geneva in 2023.

The recent surge in unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (UMAS) arriving in Switzerland presents significant public health challenges, particularly regarding immunization. Many of these adolescents lack vaccination documentation, requiring catch-up vaccination strategies. This study aimed to evaluate immunity against tetanus, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella and varicella among UMAS upon arrival in Switzerland, to optimize vaccination strategies, and provide protection. This retrospective observational study included 100 UMAS patients followed at Geneva University Hospitals in 2023. Patients

Geographic disparities in hepatitis B vaccine coverage across Africa: Implications for targeted interventions and 2030 goals.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality in Africa. Reaching the World Health Organization (WHO) target of ≥90% third-dose (HepB3) coverage by 2030 demands precise, subnational intelligence. We mapped hepatitis B vaccination coverage, dropout, and projected trends. METHODS: We analyzed 245,168 child vaccination records from 89 nationally representative household surveys (2010-2022) covering 51 African countries. Bayesian geostatistical models were used to produce 5 × 5 km estimates of first-dose (HepB1) and HepB3 coverage, as

Accuracy of the estimation of dental age in comparison with chronological age in a Spanish sample of 2641 living subjects using the Demirjian and Nolla methods.

Age estimation is an important procedure in forensic medicine and is carried out for a number of reasons. For living persons, age estimation is performed in order to assess whether a child has attained the age of criminal responsibility, in scenarios involving rape, kidnapping or marriage, in premature births, adoption procedures, illegal immigration, pediatric endocrine diseases and orthodontic malocclusion, as well as in circumstances in which the birth certificate is not available or the records are suspect. According to data from the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), t

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Usage and co-prescription with other potentially interacting drugs in elderly: A cross-sectional study.

Globally, usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in elderly with chronic pain has been reported as frequent. Though NSAIDs are fundamental in maintaining their quality of life, the risk of polypharmacy, drug interactions and adverse effects is of paramount importance as the elderly usually require multiple medications for their co-morbidities. If prescriptions are not appropriately monitored and managed, they are likely to expose patients to serious drug interactions and potentially fatal adverse effects. This study was conducted to assess the appropriateness of NSAIDs use and

Evidence of artemisinin partial resistance in North-western Tanzania: clinical and drug resistance markers study.

BACKGROUND: Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are the recommended antimalarial drugs for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria. The recent emergence of artemisinin partial resistance (ART-R) in Rwanda, Uganda and Eritrea is of great concern. In Tanzania, a nationwide molecular malaria surveillance in 2021 showed a high prevalence of the Kelch13 (K13) 561H mutation in Plasmodium falciparum from the north-western region, close to the border with Rwanda and Uganda. This study was conducted in 2022 to evaluate the efficacy of artemether-lumefantrine (AL) and artesunate-amodiaquine (A

What is the situation of human T cell lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II) in Africa? Origin and dissemination of genomic subtypes.

Human T cell lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II) and its two genomic subtypes, A and B, which differ by 3 to 6% at the nucleotide level (depending on the gene studied), were until recently considered to be endemic only in certain Indian tribes in the Americas and were therefore considered mainly as a "New World virus." First, the evidence of HTLV-II antibodies and later characterization of isolates from sex workers or individuals living in large West and Central African cities suggested that HTLV-II subtype A could have been imported recently in Africa. However, the findings of HTLV-II infect
