A 70-year-old woman presented with a corneal ulcer resulting from aberrant and exuberant eyelash growth. She had recently been diagnosed with recurrent non-small-cell lung cancer for which she had begun a chemotherapeutic regimen that included erlotinib HCl. After several months of treatment, she noted the onset of escalating ocular irritation, which culminated in her presentation. Examination of her ocular adnexa revealed coarse, brittle, irregular aberrant eyelash growth. She has been successfully treated with regular epilation and eyelash trimming and has remained symptom free.

The authors report a case of nonsurgical management of lash ptosis using eyelash lamination. A 36-year-old male presented with persistent foreign body sensation and visual obscuration. Slit lamp examination revealed elongated, ptotic upper eyelashes that rested on the cornea and extended into the pupillary axis. After thorough consultation, the patient declined surgical correction and instead elected to undergo a semipermanent eyelash lamination procedure, which relies on thioglycolic acid and polyacrylamide. This chemical treatment lifted and reshaped the lashes, which redirected them away fr

Prostaglandin analogs (bimatoprost, travoprost, tafluprost, etc.) have similar effects to prostaglandins and are effective drugs for treating glaucoma. These compounds exhibit abnormal reactions such as causing eyelash growth, with several cases being reported of people purchasing them to increase eyelash growth; however, some cases have reported side effects such as pigmentation and dry eyes. In the Republic of Korea, cosmetics are not medicines for treating diseases; therefore, cosmetics cannot contain drugs or have labels that could mislead people. However, there are cases in which products

Phthiriasis palpebrarum is a rare infestation of the eyelids caused by Phthirus pubis. This condition is particularly noteworthy as it is a rare cause of red eyes in children and can often be confused with other forms of blepharoconjunctivitis. In this study, we examined an 11-year-old male patient who was brought to our clinic by his family and presented with redness and itching in both eyes that had persisted for a month. Biomicroscopic examination revealed two live lice with mobile legs and a semi-transparent appearance on the eyelashes of both upper eyelids, together with a large number of

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies demonstrated the potential pathogenic relationship between infestation of the eyelashes by the parasite Demodex and chronic blepharitis, whereas other studies did not demonstrate such relations and concluded that Demodex is a normal eyelid flora.
AIMS: This study examines the prevalence of Demodex in patients with blepharitis compared to a healthy control group in Israel, in order to further explore and establish its pathogenic role in cases of chronic blepharitis.
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted including 110 participants: 60 patients with chronic

Setleis syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by "coarse" face, temporal cutis aplasia, double upper eyelashes, absent lower eyelashes, chronic conjunctivitis, and prominent thick lips, was reported previously in 8 Puerto Rican children. We report on 3 unrelated children (one mentally retarded) with Setleis syndrome who are not of Puerto Rican descent. Two of our patients had imperforate anus, which has not previously been reported. The evolution of the phenotype over time is illustrated.

A woman on erlotinib treatment for lung cancer presented with a corneal ulcer from aberrant eyelash touch. She developed coarse, hyperpigmented and irregular eyelash and eyebrow growth a few months following treatment. She was treated successfully with epilation, eyelash trimming, lid hygiene and intensive topical lubrication. This is the first case report in the UK of trichomegaly with associated corneal ulceration. Erlotinib is an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor that has recently been approved for use as a chemotherapeutic agent by the National Institute for

Demodex is an important pathogen in ophthalmology. It is believed to cause a variety of eyelid and eyelash diseases. Currently, light microscopes are being used for imaging demodex. However, microscopes are not available everywhere. Also, it is not cost-effective to perform light microscopy in every case. In this case, we demonstrate a new method: imaging demodex using cell phone. A 90-diopter noncontact double aspheric lens was attached to the posterior camera of the smartphone with clear tape. An eyelash of a patient with blepharitis was removed. A video was taken using smartphone. There was

A 7-year-old girl with a history of being in contact with a cat was referred to our department due to her 1-month unilateral blepharitis that was initially treated as a herpetic infection without amelioration. She experienced itching and loss of her right eyelashes (Figure 1). Her visual acuity was 20/20. The slit lamp examination revealed anterior blepharitis with madarosis, broken eyelashes, and lesions in right lower eyelid, while the left eyelids were normal.

Objective: To report the occurrence and management of an eyelashes infestation by Phthirus pubis. Methods: A 27-year-old female presented with itching in her right eye and head after she had been traveling in southern Italy five days earlier. Visual acuity (VA) was 20/20 in both eyes. Slit-lamp examination showed bilateral blepharitis. Moreover, mobile insects and eggs attached to the eyelashes were observed. A microbiological study was performed with a Phthirus pubis result. The patient was treated with mechanical dislodging. Results: The resolution of the infection was carried out removing e

Numerous cosmetic enhancements and augmentations to the natural appearance of the periorbital area are readily available today. Due to the increasing popularity of these cosmetic procedures, it is important for ophthalmologists to be aware of their potential risks, complications and adverse effects. The aim of this literature review was to introduce some of the most common ocular cosmetic enhancements and provide a comprehensive overview of their associated adverse effects reported in various medical journals. PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar were used to identify articles related to the fol

Demodex parasites may cause skin and eyelash lesions by settling on the pilosebaceous unit. This parasite plays a role in the pathophysiology of acne in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). We aimed to examine the relationship between Demodex folliculorum and blood glucose control in patients with PCOS with skin and eyelash lesions. Forty-four patients with PCOS with skin lesions were enrolled in the study. At least two specimens were taken from the skin lesions using the standard method and at least six epilated eyelashes were taken from both eyes under a biomicroscope and evaluated using a li

Phthiriasis palpebrarum (PP) is the infestation of eyelids caused by the ectoparasite Phthirus pubis, frequently misdiagnosed as allergic conjunctivitis, blepharitis or dermatitis. There is no standard treatment of choice although various treatment modalities have been described. A 6-year-old male child with PP was successfully treated with local application of 20% fluorescein solution over the eyelashes and eyebrows of both the eyes, followed by the mechanical removal of all parasites and trimming of the eyelashes from the base and application of ophthalmic ointment.

PURPOSE: To determine whether the Löffler's alkaline methylene blue staining method is better than no staining in detecting Demodex mites in the eyelashes of patients with blepharitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eyelashes were collected from 22 patients with blepharitis. The mean age of the patients was 82.5±6.2 years (± SD) with a range from 71 to 93 years. Eyelashes were epilated by forceps and placed individually on microscope slides. The number of Demodex mites was determined by conventional optical microscopy before and immediately after the addition of the methylene blue staining solution.
