BACKGROUND: High-pressure injection injuries are rare injuries and are frequently underestimated due to the limited external damage. Because of their association with occupational activities, these injuries are predominantly seen in hands. Facial involvement in such traumas is extremely rare. The difference in facial anatomy compared to the extremities demands careful consideration of both associated complications and treatment options.
CASE: A 6-year-old girl with no significant medical history was presented to the Emergency Department with a high-pressure injection injury to her right eye w

While abroad, a healthy 36-year-old woman slammed head-on into a rock wall at high speed, resulting in significant facial trauma. The initial trauma care and first aid took place abroad. In the Netherlands, the woman was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) for reconstruction of her face and alveolar processes, gingiva and dentition. In view of the seriousness of the injuries, a 3D treatment plan was drawn up in a multidisciplinary collaboration with an OMF surgeon, an implantologist, dentist and dental technician. By making a digital setup of both the top and bo

PURPOSE: Interpersonal violence is a relatively infrequent cause of injury to the craniofacial skeleton in the pediatric population. The presentation of fractures as a result of different causes varies dramatically and can have a direct impact on management. The current study compares facial fractures in a pediatric population as a result of interpersonal violence with other mechanisms of injury.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all of the facial fractures at a level 1 trauma center in an urban environment was performed for the years 2000 to 2012. Patients ≤18 years were included. Patient d

Mechanisms causing facial fractures have evolved over time and may be predictive of the types of injuries sustained. The objective of this study is to examine the impact of mechanisms of injury on the type and management of facial fractures at our Level 1 Trauma Center. The authors performed an Institutional Review Board-approved review of our network's trauma registry from 2006 to 2010, documenting age, sex, mechanism, Injury Severity Score, Glasgow Coma Scale, facial fracture patterns (nasal, maxillary/malar, orbital, mandible), and reconstructions. Mechanism rates were compared using a Pear

Temporal artery biopsy is considered the gold standard investigation of giant cell arteritis and is recommended in suspected cases despite a sensitivity of 81-91%. This review highlights the potential risk of facial nerve injury during temporal artery biopsy and introduces recent advances in the emerging role of imaging modalities. When these non-invasive techniques are used in conjunction with American College of Rheumatology scoring, which includes clinical features and biochemical test results, temporal artery biopsy may be avoided in selected cases.

INTRODUCTION: Given the morbidity caused by facial nerve paralysis, there have been consistent approaches to treatment over the past 20 years in reanimation of the facial nerve. Treatment depends on accurate clinical examination, a good understanding of the anatomic course, and appropriate diagnostic tests. There are various options when it comes to dynamic facial nerve reanimation that range from nerve grafting, nerve anastomosis, crossover techniques and muscle transfer to microneurovascular muscle flaps, and-recently-potentially new concepts with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) techno

Facial perforation injuries are very rare. We describe a case of a 48-year-old man who sustained a perforation trauma from an 11 cm long wooden tree branch in the middle of the face in a skiing accident. He suffered from additional injuries, such as fractures of the ribs and hand, but was neurologically without pathologic findings and was cardiopulmonary stable. The branch penetrated the head from the sinus maxillaris through the maxilla just missing the internal and external carotid arteries and ending just short of the cervical vertebra. The patient was transported to a center for oral and ma

Foreign bodies can present a diagnostic challenge to the maxillofacial surgeon. Three patients, who suffered from a penetrating injury with a wooden foreign body, were examined and treated. Their preoperative CT and MRI scans were evaluated. In an acute case, the penetrating wooden body mimicked air bubbles. In the other two patients, the wood was retained for several months and appeared with a much higher density on CT. In MRI the wooden foreign bodies gave a low signal intensity. In all injuries removal of the foreign body was delayed, because it was initially radiologically missed or misdia
