In 1977, outbreaks of disease associated with serious losses occurred on twenty cattle farms. This disease was due to the fact that the animals had been fed brewers' grains. The clinical picture was marked by anorexia, profuse salivation, regurgitation and dehydration. The course of the disease varied with the severity of the attack. Toxicological tests were negative. Cl. botulinum type B as well as toxin type B were found to be present in the brewers' grains fairly often. As a rule, Cl. botulinum was also detected in the rumen contents and faeces. The treatment of the animals is described; th

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dried fish sold in informal markets is an affordable source of protein but may be vulnerable to microbial contamination because of inadequate hygiene and handling practices. This study aimed to assess microbial contamination levels, identify bacterial isolates using 16S rRNA sequencing, and determine the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles of bacteria recovered from sun-dried, smoked, and salted fish sold in informal markets in Gauteng Province, South Africa. The research addressed limited information on the microbiological quality and AMR of dried fish sold in South Af

Gluten cross-contamination in gluten-free food may jeopardize treatment of celiac patients. Considering the deficit of appropriate instruments to enable the implementation of safe production practices for gluten-free food, this study aimed to evaluate the application of a check-list elaborated for gluten cross-contamination prevention in food services. The instrument was applied in 60 Brazilian food services. Interobserver reproducibility and internal consistency of the check-list were tested. A score classification was created for establishments according to the food contamination risk assess

DNA walkers are a type of programmable, dynamic DNA nanomachine composed of synthetic oligonucleotides that move in a controlled manner along specific nucleic acid tracks through strand displacement or catalytic cleavage reactions. Among the various methods used to power them, DNAzyme-driven DNA walkers have attracted increasing interest because they combine enzyme-like catalytic functions with the inherent advantages of DNA materials. DNAzymes are single-stranded DNA molecules capable of catalyzing precise cleavage of DNA or RNA substrates in the presence of metal ion cofactors. They offer be

Thermochemical conversion of food waste into biochar offers a compelling circular economy pathway for soil amendment, yet comprehensive safety assessments remain limited. This study assessed the stability, contaminant fate, nutrient leaching, and microbial compatibility of bone and mixed vegetable biochars pyrolyzed at 300-600 °C. Feedstock identity dominated variance in yield, ash, and carbon (η2 = 0.73-0.91), whereas temperature governed the volatile heteroatoms H, O and N (η2 = 0.44-0.74; all p < 0.001). At 600 °C, bone retained higher yield (60.3 ± 0.7 % vs 34.4 ± 0.7 %) and appreciable po

Food contamination poses a significant global health threat with carcinogenic potential, though the molecular pathways connecting contaminants to cancer remain poorly understood. This study sought to identify key molecular targets mediating the carcinogenic effects of nine prevalent dietary contaminants: glyphosate, perfluorooctane sulfonate, nitrosamines, pentabromodiphenyl ethers, methylmercury, dioxins, acrylamide, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and aflatoxin. Using multiple online databases, we identified target genes associated with these contaminants and pan-cancer, then conducted protein-prot

Moringa stenopetala is considered a superfood due to the many bioactive compounds that it provides to the diet. However, like all edible plants, it is mandatory to guarantee food safety. Thus it is necessary to develop analytical methods that can rapidly and accurately determine hazardous pollutants, to evaluate compliance with food regulations. In this regard, two multi-component procedures were developed trying to cover some of the main organic and inorganic potential contaminants. A microwave-assisted digestion followed by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was used for arsenic,

Unknown or unexpected chemical contaminants and/or their transformation products in food that may be harmful to humans need to be discovered for comprehensive safety evaluation. Liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) is a powerful tool for detecting chemical contaminants in food samples. However, identifying all of peaks in LC-HRMS is not possible, but if class information is known in advance, further identification will become easier. In this work, a novel MS2 spectra classification-driven screening strategy was constructed based on LC-HRMS and machine learning. Fir

Obesogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) belong to the group of environmental contaminants, which can adversely affect human health. A growing body of evidence supports that chronic exposure to EDCs can contribute to a rapid increase in obesity among adults and children, especially in wealthy industrialized countries with a high production of widely used industrial chemicals such as plasticizers (bisphenols and phthalates), parabens, flame retardants, and pesticides. The main source of human exposure to obesogenic EDCs is through diet, particularly with the consumption of contaminated

UNLABELLED: Consumers, especially those with allergies and/or intolerances, should have confidence in two critical areas of food safety: foods should be correctly labelled and free from contamination. To this end, global proteomic analysis employing LC-MS/MS of gluten-enriched extracts derived from 12 barley cultivars was undertaken, providing a foundation for the development of MS-based quantitative methodologies that would enable the detection of barley contamination in foods. Subsequently, a number of candidate barley-specific peptide markers were evaluated by multiple-reaction monitoring M

It is difficult to carry out multiple detection of different type of chemicals because of the different chemical microenvironment requirements. Herein, a low-cost and simple paper-based microfluidic device integrated with fluorescence labeled single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) functionalized graphene oxide sensor was developed for the multiplex determination of different types of chemical contaminants in food. In this work, Cy5 labeled corresponding functional ssDNA for different analytes associated with graphene oxide (ssDNA-GO) were employed as core detection sensors to sensitively report the prese

BACKGROUND: Pesticide poisoning remains a major global health concern contributing to an estimated 371,594 deaths annually. Both accidental and deliberate pesticide exposure, particularly in developing countries, pose challenges to public health systems. In KSA, pesticide poisoning is prevalent, and insecticides such as carbamates and organophosphates are the primary culprits.
CASE PRESENTATION: Four cases of acute poisoning caused by the ingestion of contaminated shawarma sandwiches containing carbofuran and bifenthrin, a carbamate and pyrethroid mixture, respectively, are described. The aff

BACKGROUND: The EAT-Lancet diet was created to support dietary transition towards sustainable diets. Current evidence indicates that adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet may reduce mortality risk, yet how adherence may impact dietary exposure to food contaminants remains unexplored. We aimed to estimate the association between adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet and i) all-cause, cardiovascular-, and cancer-mortality and ii) predicted dietary exposure to the following food contaminants: cadmium, methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and pesticide residues.
METHODS: We used self-reported d

Globally, soil contamination threatens ecosystems and food security. This study examines the contamination of soils intended for agri-food initiatives by Indigenous communities across New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, and Newfoundland and subarctic Ontario, Canada. Soils from 47 sites were tested for metals, metalloids, organochlorine (OC) pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to assess ecological risks and compare against national guidelines. Australian soils were primarily contaminated with lead (Pb) and to a lesser extent with other metals and metalloids, whereas subarct

IntroductionPesticides pose a risk for cancer development and progression. People are continuously exposed to such substances by several routes, including daily intake of contaminated food and water, especially in countries that are highly pesticide consumers and have very permissive legislation about pesticide contamination as Brazil. This work investigated the relationship among pesticides, food contamination, and dietary cancer risk.MethodsAnalyzed two social reports from the Brazilian Government: the Program for Analysis of Residues of Pesticides in Food (PARA) and The National Program for

SCOPE: Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium species. In mammals, this toxin causes widespread organ-specific damage; it promotes hepatotoxicity, is immunotoxic, alters intestinal functions etc. Despite its inhibitory effect on de novo ceramide synthesis, its molecular mechanism of action and toxicity is not totally elucidated.
METHODS AND RESULTS: To explore the mechanism of FB1 toxicity, we analyzed the transcriptome and the kinome of two organs targeted by FB1: the liver and the jejunum. Pigs were fed for 4 weeks a control diet or a FB1-contaminated diet (10 mg/kg). As exp

A case of acute toxoplasmosis in an adolescent girl, almost certainly related to the consumption of raw sausage, is described. The girl suffered of fever and weakness and presented a swollen lymph node in the submandibular region. Serology analysis was positive for Toxoplasma gondii and excluded other infections. Further analysis, with avidity test and immunoblot, confirmed the acute toxoplasmosis. She reported that about a month before the appearance of the symptoms, she had eaten a piece of raw sausage while it was being prepared by her father. We analyzed sausage samples prepared from this

In Ghana, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and smallholder vegetable farming occupy the same landscapes, and in many communities the same households combine both livelihoods, yet no systematic account has previously quantified how much potentially toxic element (PTE) contamination travels from mine waste into food. This review addresses that gap for the pre-harvest and post-harvest stages of the value chain for the four vegetables that define Ghanaian diets: tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), pepper (Capsicum annuum), garden egg (Solanum aethiopicum), and onion (Allium cepa).
