Viscosity of high-alcohol content fuel blends with water: subsurface contaminant transport implications.

In the United States, a gasoline fuel blend with alcohol volume fractions of 85% or more is considered (among other fuels) an alternative fuel. As the popularity and usage of high-alcohol content gasoline fuel blends increase, subsurface contamination from these fuels will be of great environmental concern. An important parameter governing the movement of these contaminants in unsaturated porous media is the liquid viscosity. In this study, five sets of experiments are conducted to determine viscosity variations of (a) blends of 15% gasoline with various alcohol mixtures, and (b) mixtures of h

Reducing ultra-high particulate number (PN) emissions from high-mileage vehicles: The effective role of compressed natural gas (CNG).

Vehicle particle number (PN) emissions pose a serious threat to human health and the environment, making it crucial to investigate their emission characteristics and control strategies in depth. In this study, high- and low-mileage bi-fuel (gasoline/CNG) taxis that use conventional gasoline, ethanol-containing gasoline, and CNG were tested via a chassis dynamometer. The results indicate that the PN emission factor is significantly affected by the fuel type and driving conditions. Compared with conventional gasoline, both ethanol-containing gasoline and CNG effectively reduce PN emissions, with

Fuel forensics: Recent advancements in profiling of adulterated fuels by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and chemometric approaches.

Gasoline and diesel are the main petroleum products used for road transportation in India. Due to this reason, adulteration can be done by fraudsters using different miscible substances such as kerosene, turpentine, thinner, ethanol etc. In this work, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square regression (PLSR) were used to investigate adulteration in petroleum products and to design an adulterant profiling. ATR-FTIR has an advantage over other traditional methods as it is less time-consuming and needs no extraction p

Effect of background interference on accelerant detection by canines.

Additional studies were performed with respect to examining the lower limits at which canines can reliably detect products commonly used as accelerants and distinguish them from pyrolysis products or background hydrocarbons. As part of a testing exercise performed in conjunction with a national conference of the Canine Accelerant Detection Association (CADA), 34 canines were subjected to a series of tests, some of them were a recertification proficiency. In one of the tests, the dogs were nearly unanimously successful in locating one can (out of five) containing 50% evaporated gasoline at the

Changes in motor vehicle emissions on diurnal to decadal time scales and effects on atmospheric composition.

Emissions from gasoline and diesel engines vary on time scales including diurnal, weekly, and decadal. Temporal patterns differ for these two engine types that are used predominantly for passenger travel and goods movement, respectively. Rapid growth in diesel fuel use and decreasing NOx emission rates from gasoline engines have led to altered emission profiles. During the 1990s, on-road use of diesel fuel grew 3 times faster than gasoline. Over the same time period, the NOx emission rate from gasoline engines in California was reduced by a factor of approximately 2, while the NOx emission rat

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography analysis of high-ethanol containing motor fuels.

A comprehensive 2-D GC (GC x GC) instrument equipped with a flow-switching modulator was used to determine the concentration of ethanol and eight other alcohols in a retail pump sample of E85 fuel. E85 is a mixture of ethanol and gasoline where the ethanol concentration can range from 70 to 85 vol%. The increased peak capacity and selectivity generated by GC x GC analysis allowed the alcohols to be fully resolved from the gasoline hydrocarbons. GC x GC analysis was compared to the performance obtained with the standard analytical method for determining ethanol in fuel ethanol (ASTM D5501) and

Allocating petroleum products during oil supply disruptions.

Four options for allocating a long-term, severe shortfall of petroleum imports are analyzed: oil price and allocation controls, coupon gasoline rationing, variable gasoline tax and rebate, and no oil price controls with partial rebates. Each of these options is evaluated in terms of four criteria: microeconomic effects, macroeconomic effects, equity, and practical problems. The implications of this analysis for energy contingency planning are discussed.

The Effect of Ethanol Fuel on the Emissions of Vehicles over a Wide Range of Temperatures.

The emissions from a fleet of 11 vehicles, including three from the State of Alaska, were tested at 75, 0, and -20 °F with base gasolines and E10 gasolines, that is, gasolines with 10% by volume ethanol added. The data for the changes in emissions for the test run at 75 °F are included, since most other studies on the effects of E10 gasoline on emissions were run at that temperature. The three Alaskan vehicles were also tested at 20 °F. The testing followed the Federal Test Procedure, and regulated emissions-CO, total hydrocarbons (THC), and nitrogen oxides (NOx)-CO2, speciated organics, and f

Source and composition analysis of petroleum hydrocarbons in the refinery circulating water.

Oil leakage from water coolers in refinery circulating water occurs from time to time, which affects the long-term and stable operation of refinery units. So far, workers in the refineries still adopt manual check methods, opening water coolers one by one and checking the water's smell and color to find out the spilled water coolers. In this study, a more rapid method of source appointment of oil spill in the circulating water by combining chemical fingerprinting with model recognition was developed. Firstly, chemical fingerprints including benzene/naphthalene series, and light hydrocarbon (C3

A High-Resolution VOC Emission Inventory for Gas Stations in a Typical Yangtze River Delta City: Implications for Ozone Formation, Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation, and Health Risks.

Gasoline evaporation is a significant source of urban volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, we selected Nanjing, a major city in the Yangtze River Delta of China, and developed a high-resolution (1 km × 1 km) gridded VOC species emission inventory for gas stations based on measured VOC emission characteristics and statistical data on gasoline and diesel sales. The results show that VOC emissions from gas stations were correlated with population density and road networks, and were mainly concentrated in the downtown area. The emitted VOCs were dominated by alkanes (58%) and oxygenat

Identification of major water-soluble fluorescent components of some petrochemicals.

The chemical identities of several organic compounds that dominate the ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence of water after exposure to gasoline, diesel fuel and crude oil are presented. A combination of high-performance liquid chromatography with UV-fluorescence detection, fluorescence spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is used to show that naphthalene, methylnaphthalene and methylstyrene are the major fluorescent species in water following exposure to gasoline. These compounds are not dominant in water exposed to other petrochemicals we studied.

Remote sensing of ammonia and sulfur dioxide from on-road light duty vehicles.

This study reports the largest data set of on-road, fuel-based mass emissions of ammonia and sulfur dioxide from vehicles of known make, model year, and fuel type. Ammonia is the first pollutant observed for which the emissions decrease with increasing fleet age from 10 to 20 years. The fixed nitrogen emission ratio is 15.0% by mass and 24.7% by mole, larger than current models predict. Diesel fueled vehicles emit more SO2 than gasoline, and unexpectedly, gasoline SO2 emissions decrease continuously with newer model year vehicles.
