Rule and Exemplar-based Transfer in Category Learning.

We compared the neural systems involved in transfer to novel stimuli via rule application versus exemplar processing. Participants learned a categorization task involving abstraction of a complex rule and then categorized different types of transfer stimuli without feedback. Rule stimuli used new features and therefore could only be categorized using the rule. Exemplar stimuli included only one of the features necessary to apply the rule and therefore required participants to categorize based on similarity to individual previously learned category members. Consistent and inconsistent stimuli w

Generalization of Conditioned Fear and Obsessive-Compulsive Traits.

Generalization of conditioned fear refers to the transfer of the conditioned fear response to stimuli that resemble the original conditioned stimulus. Overgeneralization of conditioned fear has been associated with panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder and may be relevant to obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms as well. This study represents the first attempt to determine the degree to which individuals with high versus low OC traits over generalize conditioned fear. We hypothesized that the high OC individuals, particularly those characterized by overestimation of threat, would show o

Massed amygdaloid kindling in encéphale isolé cats: its facilitation by naloxone.

The effect of repetitive administration of naloxone on the development of massed amygdaloid kindling in 'encéphale isolé' cats was studied. Electrical amygdaloid kindling was carried out with a 15 min inter-stimulus interval (ISI) in a control situation with intravenous (i.v.) naloxone administration (2, 4, and 8 mg/kg), 5 min prior to amygdaloid stimulation. It was found that it was possible to complete the amygdaloid kindling process in the encéphale isolé preparation reaching generalized electrographic tonic-clonic self-sustained seizures. The enhancement of the duration, frequency, and pro

Increasing spontaneous verbal responding in autistic children using a time delay procedure.

One oft-cited problem with teaching speech skills to autistic children is the failure of the speech to be spontaneous. That is, the children's speech often remains under the control of the verbal behavior of others rather than under the control of other nonverbal referents in the environment. We investigated the effectiveness of a time delay procedure to increase the spontaneous speech of seven autistic children. Initially, the experiment presented a desired object (e.g., cookie) and immediately modeled the appropriate response "I want (cookie)." Gradually, as the child imitated the vocalizati

Functional antagonism of the caffeine-discriminative stimulus by triazolam in humans.

Six healthy male volunteers (aged 21-31 yr) were trained to discriminate between the methylxanthine caffeine (320 mg/70 kg, p.o.; e.g. drug A) and placebo (drug B). Then dose-effect curves were determined for triazolam (0.1-0.56 mg/70 kg), alone and in combination with the caffeine training dose (n = 6), buspirone (1.0-32.0 mg/70 kg), alone and in combination with the caffeine training dose (n = 4), and caffeine (56-560 mg/70 kg), alone and in combination with a selected dose of triazolam (n = 5). Triazolam blocked the discriminative effects of the caffeine training dose in a dose-related mann

Specific, selective or preferential: comments on category specificity in neuroimaging.

An important goal of functional neuroimaging has been to localize stimulus-specific processes in the brain. Numerous studies have revealed particular patterns of brain activity in different cortical areas in response to different object categories such as faces, body parts, places, words, letters and so forth. However, quite different patterns of activation have been given a similar interpretation in terms of category or domain specificity. Other characteristics than the response to the target category have sometimes been used to address whether a cortical brain area is functionally specialize

Pre-stimulus alpha-band power and phase fluctuations originate from different neural sources and exert distinct impact on stimulus-evoked responses.

Ongoing oscillatory neural activity before stimulus onset influences subsequent visual perception. Specifically, both the power and the phase of oscillations in the alpha-frequency band (9-13 Hz) have been reported to predict the detection of visual stimuli. Up to now, the functional mechanisms underlying pre-stimulus power and phase effects on upcoming visual percepts are debated. Here, we used magnetoencephalography recordings together with a near-threshold visual detection task to investigate the neural generators of pre-stimulus power and phase and their impact on subsequent visual-evoked

A subject-specific mechanistic model of affect links electroencephalography, cardiorespiratory feedback, and monoaminergic dynamics.

INTRODUCTION: Affective experience emerges from interactions among cortical activity, bodily physiology, and contextual interpretation, yet the mechanisms linking these processes remain incompletely understood. Although EEG-based studies have advanced affect decoding, many data-driven approaches provide limited mechanistic insight into inter-individual variability. We developed a subject-specific, hypothesis-generating computational framework linking EEG-derived cortical activity and cardiorespiratory dynamics to subjective affect through putative neuromodulatory processes. METHODS: The frame

Discriminative-stimulus effects of triazolam and midazolam in rhesus monkeys.

The present study characterized the discriminative-stimulus effects of triazolam and midazolam in rhesus monkeys. Six monkeys discriminated 0.1 mg/kg of triazolam from vehicle under a fixed-ratio 5 (FR 5) schedule of stimulus-shock termination (SST). Four monkeys subsequently discriminated 0.56 mg/kg of midazolam from vehicle under the same schedule of reinforcement. Benzodiazepine (BDZ) agonists midazolam and diazepam, and the barbiturate pentobarbital, substituted for triazolam, and the non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist ketamine did not. D-amphetamine-like stimulus properties are produced by morphine injections into the ventral tegmental area but not into the nucleus accumbens.

We investigated whether injections of morphine into the ventral tegmental area (VTA) or the nucleus accumbens (NAS) could produce amphetamine-like stimulus properties and locomotor stimulant effects. Rats were trained to discriminate 1.0 mg/kg D-amphetamine from saline using both VI-30 and FR-16 reinforcement schedules and they were then tested following bilateral injections of morphine sulfate (2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 micrograms/side) either into the VTA or the NAS. Intra-VTA injections of morphine produced significant increases in amphetamine-lever responding that were comparable to increases obse

Role of training dose in drug discrimination: a review.

Drug discrimination has been an important technique in behavioural pharmacology for at least 40 years. The characteristics of drug-produced discriminative stimuli are influenced by behavioural and pharmacological variables, including the doses used to establish discriminations. This review covers studies on the effects of varying the training dose of a drug in a search for general principles that are applicable across different drug classes and methodological approaches. With respect to quantitative changes, relationships between training dose and the rate of acquisition or magnitude of stimul

Are Fear Learning Processes Altered in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Social Anxiety, and Specific Phobia? Insights From the Late Positive Potential, Fear-Potentiated Startle, and Ratings.

Fear learning processes are often considered underlying mechanisms in the development and maintenance of anxiety- and stress-related disorders. However, limited attention has been paid to whether these changes are shared across disorders or certain symptoms. In this context, transdiagnostic research on symptom dimensions is especially relevant, as it addresses the significant symptom overlap and heterogeneity observed in these disorders. In the current study, we investigated the late positive potential, fear-potentiated startle, and subjective ratings (US-expectancy) in a transdiagnostic sampl

Discriminative stimulus properties of the atypical antipsychotic clozapine and the typical antipsychotic chlorpromazine in a three-choice drug discrimination procedure in rats.

RATIONALE: The atypical antipsychotic drug (APD) clozapine elicits a robust discriminative cue that is generally selective for other atypical APDS in two-choice drug discrimination (DD) procedures. OBJECTIVES: The present study determined whether a three-choice DD procedure with the atypical APD clozapine (CLZ) versus the typical APD chlorpromazine (CPZ) versus vehicle (VEH) could provide greater selectivity between atypical and typical APDs. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were trained to discriminate 5.0 mg/kg CLZ from 1.0 mg/kg CPZ from VEH in a three-lever DD task with an FR30 food reinforc

Shifts in stimulus control over opioid use with increasing periods of recovery.

BACKGROUND: Periods of engaging in an alternative behavior diminishes behavioral control by stimuli occasioning alcohol use. This increase in relapse resistance with increasing recovery suggests that changing stimulus control over substance use may be a mechanism responsible for decreased relapse rates with longer recovery. However, the generality of this phenomenon to other drugs of abuse, including opioid self-administration, remains unclear. This study tests the generality of these findings with etonitazene to determine whether the shift in attention represents a behavioral process that gen

ICER-Controlled inhibitory plasticity of amygdala engram neurons regulates fear memory precision.

Fear discrimination-the ability to distinguish threatening stimuli from non-threatening ones-is an essential adaptive behavior, yet the neural mechanisms underlying individual differences in discrimination precision remain unclear. Here, we show that parvalbumin-positive interneuron (PV-IN)-mediated feedforward inhibition to fear engram neurons (ENs) in the lateral amygdala is selectively enhanced following auditory fear conditioning, driven by increased postsynaptic expression of α1 subunit (Gabra1)-containing GABAA receptors. Disruption of PV-IN activity during fear retrieval-via optogenetic

Social behavior of students who are seriously emotionally disturbed. A quantitative analysis of intervention studies.

The social behavior of students who are seriously emotionally disturbed sets them apart from their normative classroom peers. This article provides a quantitative analysis of intervention studies dealing with the social behavior of seriously emotionally disturbed students. Social behavior was broadly defined as including social skills deficits, behavior under inadequate stimulus control, and inappropriate behavior in the classroom. Of the 28 studies located, 11 dealt with some aspect of social skills and 17 with inappropriate classroom behavior. Each study was analyzed with respect to (a) the

The effects of differential training procedures on linked perceptual class formation.

When the stimuli in one perceptual class (A') become related to the stimuli in another perceptual class (B'), the two are functioning as a single linked perceptual class. A common linked perceptual class would be the sounds of a person's voice (class A') and the pictures of that person (class B'). Such classes are ubiquitous in real world settings. We describe the effects of a variety of training procedures on the formation of these classes. The results could account for the development of naturally occurring linked perceptual classes. Two perceptual classes (A' and B') were formed in Experime

Involvement of dopamine D2 receptor signal transduction in the discriminative stimulus effects of the κ-opioid receptor agonist U-50,488H in rats.

We have reported previously that the inhibition of both dopaminergic and psychotomimetic/hallucinogenic components plays a role in the discriminative stimulus effects of U-50,488H. However, the mechanisms that underlie the discriminative stimulus effects of U-50,488H, and especially the component that plays a significant role, have not yet been clarified. The present study was designed to further investigate the mechanism(s) of the discriminative stimulus effects of the κ-opioid receptor agonist U-50,488H in rats that had been trained to discriminate between 3.0 mg/kg U-50,488H and saline. Classification of vowels and consonants by individuals with moderate mental retardation: development of arbitrary relations via match-to-sample training with compound stimuli.

This study explored whether an identity-matching-based stimulus equivalence procedure could be used to teach vowel and consonant stimulus classes to 2 adolescent females with moderate mental retardation. Delayed match-to-sample trials presented a compound sample stimulus consisting of printed letters and a spoken word ("vowel" or "consonant"). The correct comparison stimulus matched only one of the letters in the compound sample. Subsequently, test trials assessed whether arbitrary relations had formed among the individual stimuli from each compound sample and whether stimuli from different co
