INTRODUCTION: Internalized HIV stigma is a key risk factor for negative outcomes amongst adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV), including non-adherence to anti-retroviral treatment, loss-to-follow-up and morbidity. This study tested a theoretical model of multi-level risk pathways to internalized HIV stigma among South African ALHIV.
METHODS: From 2013 to 2015, a survey using total population sampling of ALHIV who had ever initiated anti-retroviral treatment (ART) in 53 public health facilities in the Eastern Cape, South Africa was conducted. Community-tracing ensured inclusion of ALHIV who wer

BACKGROUND: Identifying sexually transmitted infections (STI) in HIV-infected individuals has potential to benefit individual and public health. There are few guidelines regarding routine STI screening in sub-Saharan African HIV programs. We determined sexual risk behavior and prevalence and correlates of STI in a national survey of large HIV treatment programs in Kenya.
METHODS: A mobile screening team visited 39 (95%) of the 42 largest HIV care programs in Kenya and enrolled participants using population-proportionate systematic sampling. Participants provided behavioral and clinical data.

The aim of this study was to investigate the factors relating to CD4 level at HIV diagnosis and HIV testing behaviour. Participants were newly diagnosed patients (n = 654) in Japan from 2000 to 2005. Around 75% of participants were diagnosed at hospital and clinics. Mean CD4 counts at diagnosis through voluntary HIV testing, screening tests and testing due to concomitant sexually transmitted infection (STI) were 368, 336 and 316 cells/μL, respectively. In contrast, the mean CD4 count where testing was due to the presence of HIV-related clinical symptoms was 151 cells/μL (P < 0.0001). Compared

The oral cavity is rarely reported to be a site of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission, despite detectable virus in saliva and relatively frequent prevalence of periodontal disease in HIV-infected persons yielding increased excretion of mononuclear-cell-enriched gingival fluid. To search for possible sources of HIV in saliva, and using the polymerase chain-reaction technique, we sought the presence and shedding patterns of proviral HIV-1 DNA in gingival crevicular fluid in a group of patients previously determined as HIV-1-seropositive. Periodontal status at the collection sites wa

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Myeloid vs. CD4 + T-cell reservoirs have received less attention for HIV cure strategies, mainly due to more limited access to tissues andchallenging in vitro and in vivo models, including modeling how myeloid cells affect HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). This review highlights recent studies providing insights intomyeloid viral reservoirs, new methods to study them, and the strategies to target them.
RECENT FINDINGS: In addition to studies describing replication competent virus derived from blood monocytes, which correlates with HAND, myeloid-derived virus ca

The global prevalence of resistance to antiviral drugs combined with antiretroviral therapy (cART) emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring to better understand the dynamics of drug-resistant mutations to guide treatment optimization and patient management as well as check the spread of resistant viral strains. We have recently integrated next-generation sequencing (NGS) into routine HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) monitoring, with key challenges in the bioinformatic analysis and interpretation of the complex data generated, while ensuring data security and privacy for patient information. HIV is a retrovirus that affects the body's immune system, primarily dendritic cells, macrophages, and CD4+ T cells. As a result, several opportunistic infections are associated with HIV infection, including Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP), Toxoplasma gondii (toxoplasmosis), Cryptococcus (cryptococcosis), and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection. HIV is also associated with acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. The classic kidney disease related to HIV is HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN). HIVAN pathogenesis is linked to glomerular and renal tubular epithelial cell inf

Nationally representative surveys provide an opportunity to assess trends in recent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection based on assays for recent HIV infection. We assessed HIV incidence in Kenya in 2018 and trends in recent HIV infection among adolescents and adults in Kenya using nationally representative household surveys conducted in 2007, 2012, and 2018. To assess trends, we defined a recent HIV infection testing algorithm (RITA) that classified as recently infected (<12 months) those HIV-positive participants that were recent on the HIV-1 limiting antigen (LAg)-avidity assay wi

BACKGROUND: Despite the overrepresentation of immigrants and refugees (newcomers) in the HIV epidemic in Canada, research on their HIV treatment outcomes is limited. This study addressed this knowledge gap by describing treatment outcomes of newcomers in comparison with Canadian-born persons living with HIV in Manitoba.
METHODS: Clinical data from 1986 to 2017 were obtained from a cohort of people living with HIV and receiving care from the Manitoba HIV Program. Retrospective cohort analysis of secondary data was completed using univariate and multivariate statistics to compare differences in

INTRODUCTION: HIV-positive children are possibly more prone to developing cholesteatoma. Chronic inflammation of the middle ear cleft may be more common in patients with HIV and this may predispose HIV-positive children to developing cholesteatoma. There are no studies that describe the radiological morphology of the middle ear cleft in HIV-positive compared to HIV-negative children with cholesteatoma.
OBJECTIVES: Compare the radiological differences of the middle ear cleft in HIV-positive and HIV-negative children with cholesteatoma.
METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional, observational

BACKGROUND: Internalized HIV-related stigma acts as a barrier to antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, but its effects on other HIV care continuum outcomes are unclear.
METHODS: Among 196 HIV clinic patients in Birmingham, AL, we assessed internalized HIV-related stigma and depressive symptom severity using validated multi-item scales and assessed ART adherence using a validated single-item measure. HIV visit adherence (attended out of total scheduled visits) was calculated using data from clinic records. Using covariate-adjusted regression analysis, we investigated the association between

Incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) among HIV-infected children is 20-40 fold greater compared to HIV-uninfected children, including among HIV-infected children on antiretroviral therapy (ART). Also, HIV-exposed, uninfected children have 2.7-fold greater risk of IPD compared to HIV-unexposed children. Areas covered: We reviewed studies identified on Pubmed database with the terms 'PCV' and 'HIV'; studies involving adults only were excluded. Expert commentary: While ART and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) have reduced IPD morbidity and mortality in HIV-infected children, ART-

BACKGROUND: Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is one of the most devastating fungal diseases in patients with impaired immunity. Effective antiviral therapies have reduced the burden of PCP among AIDS patients, but an increase in the prevalence of this disease among persons receiving immunosuppressive therapies has been reported.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed HIV and non-HIV PCP patients diagnosed in our department during a nine year period. Data were collected from the local database completed during the diagnosis procedure. For each patient, demographic, clinical, radiological, biological

Although opioids have been extensively studied for their impact on the immune system, limited information is available about the specific actions of opioids on intracellular antiviral innate immunity against HIV infection. Thus, we investigated whether heroin, one of the most abused drugs, inhibits the expression of intracellular HIV restriction microRNA (miRNA) and facilitates HIV replication in macrophages. Heroin treatment of macrophages enhanced HIV replication, which was associated with the downregulation of several HIV restriction miRNAs. These heroin-mediated actions on the miRNAs and H

BACKGROUND: This is one of the three Cochrane reviews that examine the role of the telephone in HIV/AIDS services. Although HIV infection can be prevented, still a large number of new infections occur. More effective HIV prevention interventions are needed to reduce the number of people newly infected with HIV. Phone calls can be used to potentially more effectively deliver HIV prevention interventions. They have the potential to save time, reduce costs and facilitate easier access.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of voice landline and mobile telephone delivered HIV prevention interve

AIMS: Cannabinoids have been proposed for treating various neurodegenerative disorders and as adjunct therapy for HIV+ patients with neurologic sequelae. The expression of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) has been reported in neurodegenerative diseases and in simian immunodeficiency virus encephalitis, yet the receptor expression in the central nervous system of HIV+ individuals is not known.
METHODS: An anti-CB1 antibody and two anti-CB2 antibodies were employed for immunohistochemistry in the cerebral cortex and white matter of HIV encephalitis (HIVE) and HIV-associated comorbidities, as

OBJECTIVES: There exists a strong relationship between gender and HIV/AIDS, with gender inequalities contributing to HIV, and HIV/AIDS in turn worsening gender inequality. In Sub-Saharan Africa only few studies have examined gender differences in HIV status disclosure. Therefore this study explores gender differences in HIV-positive status disclosure.
METHODS: A facility based cross-sectional study using qualitative and quantitative data collection methods was conducted among 70 randomly selected HIV positive service users in South West Ethiopia. Data were collected using a pre-tested intervi
