Working in preschool increases the risk of hearing-related symptoms: a cohort study among Swedish women.

PURPOSE: To assess whether working in preschools increases the risk of hearing-related symptoms and whether age, occupational noise, and stressful working conditions affect the risk. METHODS: Questionnaire data on hearing-related symptoms were analysed in women aged 24-65 (4718 preschool teachers, and 4122 randomly selected general population controls). Prevalence and risk ratio (RR) of self-reported hearing loss, tinnitus, difficulty perceiving speech, hyperacusis and sound-induced auditory fatigue were assessed by comparing the cohorts in relation to age and self-reported occupational noise

Tinnitus and neural plasticity (Tonndorf lecture at XIth International Tinnitus Seminar, Berlin, 2014).

Ten years ago, animal models of noise-induced hearing loss predicted three cortical neural correlates of tinnitus resulting from noise-induced hearing loss: increased spontaneous firing rates, increased neural synchrony, and reorganization of tonotopic maps. Salicylate also induces tinnitus, however, the cortical correlates were reduced spontaneous firing rates, unchanged neural synchrony but some change to the tonotopic map. In both conditions increased central gain, potentially a correlate of hyperacusis, was found. Behavioral animal models suggested that tinnitus occurred, albeit not in all

The role of hidden hearing loss in tinnitus: Insights from early markers of peripheral hearing damage.

Since the presence of tinnitus is not always associated with audiometric hearing loss, it has been hypothesized that hidden hearing loss may act as a potential trigger for increased central gain along the neural pathway leading to tinnitus perception. In recent years, the study of hidden hearing loss has improved with the discovery of cochlear synaptopathy and several objective diagnostic markers. This study investigated three potential markers of peripheral hidden hearing loss in subjects with tinnitus: extended high-frequency audiometric thresholds, the auditory brainstem response, and the e

Does Chronic Neck Pain Matter? Auditory Function in Individuals With Forward Head Posture: An Exploratory Cross-Sectional Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that neck pain and cervical pathologies may contribute to auditory disorders; however, auditory functions in individuals with forward head posture (FHP) have been insufficiently studied. This study aimed to explore hearing thresholds, self-reported auditory difficulties, central auditory processing measures, and the presence of tinnitus and hyperacusis in individuals with FHP with and without chronic neck pain compared with controls. METHODS: Fifty individuals with FHP were included and classified into two groups according to the presence of nonspecific chronic n

Synaptic zinc plasticity shapes adaptive and maladaptive cortical plasticity following cochlear injury.

Cochlear damage triggers compensatory primary auditory cortex (A1) plasticity that amplifies responses to residual sensory inputs, thereby contributing to the restoration of both cortical responsiveness to sound and perceptual sound detection threshold. However, this adaptation can become maladaptive, producing neuronal hyperactivity that contributes to tinnitus and hyperacusis. The neuromodulatory mechanisms governing these adaptive and maladaptive changes remain unknown. Here, we demonstrate that noise-induced cochlear injury triggers bidirectional synaptic zinc signaling plasticity that pot

Mutation in GM2A Leads to a Progressive Chorea-dementia Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of many cases of childhood-onset chorea remains undetermined, although advances in genomics are revealing both new disease-associated genes and variant phenotypes associated with known genes. METHODS: We report a Saudi family with a neurodegenerative course dominated by progressive chorea and dementia in whom we performed homozygosity mapping and whole exome sequencing. RESULTS: We identified a homozygous missense mutation in GM2A within a prominent block of homozygosity. This mutation is predicted to impair protein function. DISCUSSION: Although discovered more tha

Tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the perception of sound without a corresponding external sound source. This condition affects approximately 14% of adults, with approximately 2% experiencing severe symptoms. Underlying mechanisms of tinnitus suggest involvement of both peripheral and central processes, in which cochlear injury and deafferentation may trigger maladaptive plasticity, increased central gain, and thalamocortical dysrhythmia, modulated by limbic and salience networks. Neuroinflammation, somatosensory-auditory coupling and other factors, such as stress, may contribute to chronicity. Clinical expression

Misophonia and Hearing Comorbidities in a Collegiate Population.

OBJECTIVES: Misophonia is a little-understood disorder in which certain sounds cause a strong emotional response in those who experience it. People who are affected by misophonia may find that noises like loud chewing, pen clicking, and/or sniffing trigger intense frustration, anger, or discomfort. The relationship of misophonia with other auditory disorders including loudness hyperacusis, tinnitus, and hearing loss is largely underexplored. This project aimed to investigate the prevalence and hearing-health comorbidities of misophonia in a college-aged population by using an online survey. D

Sound hypersensitivity phenotypes and sound hypersensitivity disorder.

This paper proposes an overarching definition for sound hypersensitivity, a common symptom frequently observed in patients with hearing loss, tinnitus and other neurological and psychiatric disorders. This multifaceted condition includes several phenotypes, which may exist in isolation or combination in the same individual: loudness hypersensitivity (hyperacusis), noxacusis, misophonia, phonophobia and noise-induced cognitive symptoms. Some individuals with sound hypersensitivity may develop a resultant sound hypersensitivity disorder, a clinically heterogeneous syndrome defined by recurrent e

Gabaergic modulation alleviates auditory hypersensitivity and neuroinflammation in sodium salicylate-treated male mice.

Auditory hypersensitivity, or hyperacusis, is characterized by increased sensitivity to sound and is often associated with tinnitus, yet its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the mechanisms of sodium salicylate-induced auditory hypersensitivity in mice, focusing on neuroinflammation, microglial activation, and neuronal excitability. Male C57BL/6 mice were used to establish the model, and auditory sensitivity was evaluated by behavioral testing. Inflammatory cytokines, excitatory receptor expression, and microglial activation in the auditory cortex were assessed usin

Sensory hypersensitivities are associated with post-traumatic headache-related disability.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether sensory hypersensitivity contributes to headache-related disability in a secondary analysis of patients with post-traumatic headache. BACKGROUND: Up to one-third of individuals with traumatic brain injuries report persistent headache 3 months post-injury. High rates of allodynia and photophobia have been observed in clinical studies and animal models of post-traumatic headache, but we do not fully understand how sensory amplifications impact post-traumatic headache-related disability. METHODS: We identified a cross-sectional sample of patients from the American

Psychosocial and Audiological Characteristics in Misophonia: An Interdisciplinary Comparison Study of Adults with Misophonia to Healthy Controls.

Despite the increasing investigation into misophonia, its classification remains debated due to symptom overlap with audiological and psychological conditions, as well as methodological limitations in existing studies. In the present study, we compared a clinical sample of adults seeking treatment for misophonia with a non-treatment-seeking sample of age- and gender-matched healthy controls. In these two samples, we examined the psychological and audiological features of misophonia by assessing key psychological processes (anger, disgust, OCD symptoms, anxiety, depression, stress, well-being,
