We investigated pneumococcal carriage between children ≦5 years old with otitis media (OM) and those without. Non-PCV13 serotypes were common in both groups; 19A remained the second most common serotype among children with OM despite high PCV13 coverage. This is important when considering a schedule with reduced vaccine doses or reduced valency, and the modification of pneumococcal immunization schedule should be followed up closely to monitor the result of protection against pneumococcal infections.

The development of serum and nasopharyngeal antibody response, as well as the magnitude and temporal pattern of fecal shedding of vaccine and revertant polio-viruses, have been examined in infants previously immunized with one or more doses of orally administered live attenuated poliovaccine, enhanced potency inactivated polio-vaccine, or both. The nature of serum immune response appears to be similar after either immunization schedule, although the antibody titers are quantitatively higher after two doses of EP-IPV than those observed after a similar schedule with OPV. Highest antibody activi

The dependence of immune response on commonly observed immunity characteristics prior to immunization has been established on the basis of the study of the kinetics of immune response in adults receiving injections of adsorbed diphtheria-tetanus (DT) toxoid with reduced antigen content, both for routine immunization and on epidemiological indications. The necessity of the practical use of immunological screening for the differentiated approach to the choice of a suitable preparation (adsorbed diphtheria toxoid, adsorbed DT toxoid or adsorbed DT toxoid with reduced antigen content) and immuniza

An outbreak of adult measles in 2007 in Japan revealed the poor immunization strategy that active implementation has not been conducted for fear of prosecution in vaccine adverse events. After 2000, many amendments in immunization law were promulgated but did not always provide a favorable circumstance for immunization schedule. Especially, the discontinuation of recommendation of Japanese encephalitis vaccine was decided soon after the occurrence of serious neurological adverse event and seemed a big fault for the prevention of illness in a long run. These are liable to cause misunderstanding

BACKGROUND: The objective of this retrospective study was to assess protection against vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) in children treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
PROCEDURE: Clinical characteristics and vaccination records were collected. Antibodies against VPDs were measured after completion of chemotherapy and after a booster dose of vaccine. Immunization status of household members was evaluated.
RESULTS: Sixty children were included. Median interval between the end of chemotherapy and enrolment in the study was 13 months (range 1-145). At ALL diagnosis, 81.3% of the c

Recent federal changes to the U.S. childhood immunization schedule have restructured the schedule-moving the COVID-19 vaccine and the hepatitis B birth dose for infants born to mothers testing negative to shared clinical decision-making, changing the recommended toddler formulation for varicella, and proposing a "consensus" core of 11 diseases routinely recommended for all children, even as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization, and other major professional societies continue to endorse the full complement of pre

Physicians counseling patients who are planning major travels should make sure that baseline immunizations (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, polio, measles, rubella) and any necessary boosters are current. In addition, several other immunizations may be warranted (yellow fever, typhoid, and cholera), depending on destination(s) and itinerary, and prophylaxis for malaria may be advisable. As worldwide requirements for immunization do change, the physician should verify current requirements before planning an immunization schedule for a particular patient.

The adolescent period heralds the pediatric patient's transition into adulthood. It is a time of dynamic development during which effective preventive care measures can promote safe behaviors and the development of lifelong health habits. One of the foundations of preventive adolescent health care is timely vaccination, and every visit can be viewed as an opportunity to update and complete an adolescent's immunizations. In the past decade, the adolescent immunization schedule has expanded to include 2 doses of quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine, 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellula

BACKGROUND: The Plasmodium falciparum pre-erythrocytic stage candidate vaccine RTS,S is being developed for protection of young children against malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. RTS,S formulated with the liposome based adjuvant AS01(E) or the oil-in-water based adjuvant AS02(D) induces P. falciparum circumsporozoite (CSP) antigen-specific antibody and T cell responses which have been associated with protection in the experimental malaria challenge model in adults.
METHODS: This study was designed to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity induced over a 19 month period by three vaccination sched

JUSTIFICATION: Children with cancer need to be immunized against the common vaccine-preventable diseases after completion and sometimes during ongoing treatment of cancer. However, the immunization schedule for these children needs to be altered due to disease and treatment related immune-suppression. Consequently, there are many guidelines/practice statements from around the world to address this issue, however, there is no such comprehensive guideline from India catering to the need of Indian children with cancer.
PROCESS: A guideline was drafted after reviewing the available literature. Th

The incidence of measles in the United States dramatically increased in the 1980s, from a low of 1,497 cases in 1983 to over 17,000 cases in 1989. Family physicians can help reverse this trend by following the revised immunization schedule, which includes a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) booster for preschool-age children. New guidelines also recommend that either the two-dose MMR schedule or serologic evidence of immunity be required for all persons entering college or employed in the medical field. Immunization policies for physician's offices should ensure that all office staff have acquired m

OBJECTIVES: Vaccines for prevention against varicella are important for adolescents and adults, who have an increased risk of severe varicella. This study aimed to evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of a two-dose immunization schedule of a live-attenuated varicella vaccine (VarV) manufactured by Sinovac (Dalian) in healthy adolescents and adults.
METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trial was conducted in healthy population aged ≥ 13 years old in China. Participants in block 1 were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive two doses of either the test vaccine or an active con

Even though we have already covered 99% of the path to eradicate poliomyelitis from the world, this disease is still causing paralysis in children. Its eradication means not only the end of wild poliovirus circulation, but vaccine-derived poliovirus circulation as well. Taking into account different factors such as: current epidemiological data, adverse events of the attenuated oral poliomyelitis vaccine (OPV), the availability of an injectable inactivated vaccine (IPV) without the potential of causing the severe adverse events of the oral vaccine (OPV), the efficacy and effectiveness of the I

As key stakeholders in immunization policy decisions, the Pediatricians of Ontario held an accredited conference on January 18, 2014, to discuss prevention of invasive meningococcal disease. Five key recommendations were put forth regarding immunization strategies to protect children from meningococcal serogroup B disease. The recently approved four-component meningococcal B (4CMenB) vaccine should be recommended and funded as part of Ontario's routine immunization schedule and should also be mandated for school attendance. Public funding for 4CMenB immunization is justified based on current M

Although vaccines based on outer membrane vesicles (OMV) of Neisseria meningitidis have been developed and administered to children, little is known about the magnitude and quality of the immune response in animal models of early life immunization. We investigated the immunogenicity of meningococcal OMV, and the influence of route and immunization schedule, in neonatal mice. The administration of two intraperitoneal doses of OMV, given at 7 and 14 days after birth, induced a significant antibody response and was highly effective in conferring protection against bacteremia in 21-day-old mice ch

BACKGROUND: Childhood immunization is a critical public health intervention, yet timeliness remains a challenge in post conflict affected settings like Iraq. This study assessed timeliness of immunization, missed doses, and associated factors with delay among children aged 18-24 months in Baghdad, Iraq.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 11 primary healthcare centers in Baghdad between May and July 2025. Data were collected from 168 children using documented immunization cards. Immunization delay was defined as vaccination administered beyond >28 days of the scheduled date. Mul

Estimates are made of monetary savings associated with measles eradication in seven industrialized countries. Three scenarios were studied: First, changing from the present two-dose measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) immunization schedule to one-dose of MMR; second, the use of an MMR and mumps-rubella schedule; or third, continuing the present schedule. Results show that the largest savings (US $623 million) would be achieved by changing to a one-dose MMR schedule with an assumption of a 3% discount rate and measles eradication in 2010. The smallest overall savings would result from option 3, by use

The feasibility of inducing rheumatic myocarditis lesions in Lewis rats by immunization with formalin-killed group A Streptococcus was evaluated. The rats were divided into three groups. Group A was immunized by injecting formalin-killed group A Streptococcus suspended in complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the hind-foot pads and repeat immunization was given 1 week later by subcutaneous injection into the belly. The rats were then sacrificed 3 weeks after the initial immunization. In group B, the rats received the same initial immunization as group A, but the repeat immunization was carried

BACKGROUND: We assessed immunity against polioviruses induced with a new Pakistani poliovirus immunization schedule and compared it to alternative poliovirus immunization schedules.
METHODS: Newborns were randomized to undergo vaccination based on 1 of 5 vaccination schedules, with doses administered at birth and at 6, 10, and 14 weeks of age. Arm A received inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) at all time points. Arm B received bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV) at all time points. Arms C and D received bOPV at the first 3 time points and bOPV plus IPV at the final time point (the curre

BACKGROUND: During the past two decades the number of injections that are required per office visit to fulfill the recommended childhood immunization schedule has increased dramatically.
METHODS: By reviewing the literature, the principles associated with pediatric combination vaccines are discussed, and practical issues related to their use in clinical practice are evaluated.
RESULTS: The ideal combination vaccine is safe, effective and easy to store and use, and its antigenic components fit within the recommended immunization schedule. The ideal combination is associated with fewer adverse
