Effect of volatile constituents from Securidaca longepedunculata on insect pests of stored grain.

Securidaca longepedunculata Fers (Polygalaceae) is commonly used as a traditional medicine in many parts of Africa as well as against a number of invertebrate pests, including insects infesting stored grain. The present study showed that S. longepedunculata root powder, its methanol extract, and the main volatile component, methyl salicylate, exhibit repellent and toxic properties to Sitophilus zeamais adults. Adult S. zeamais that were given a choice between untreated maize and maize treated with root powder, extract, or synthetic methyl salicylate in a four-way choice olfactometer significan

High efficacy of integrated preventive measures against zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in northern Afghanistan, as revealed by Quantified Infection Rates.

Following an outbreak of more than 200 cases of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) during 2004 and 2005 among International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops stationed in the Mazar-e Sharif (MeS) airport area, epidemiological investigations indicated the presence of a local high-density ZCL focus. Based on ZCL's specific transmission modes, density and seasonality, integrated preventive measures were continuously implemented from February 2006 at a German military camp constructed at MeS. Preventive techniques included such synergistic measures as skin repellents and insecticide-impr

Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding tick-borne disease prevention in endemic areas.

As part of a TickNET collaboration we evaluated the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to tick-borne disease (TBD) prevention among persons living in endemic areas of Connecticut (CT) and Maryland (MD). Up-to-date information on the use of various prevention methods, as well as attitudes toward available and potential prevention options, is critical for effective promotion of recommended behaviors. During 2016-2017, printed invitations were mailed via the post office to 27,029 households requesting participation in an online survey regarding knowledge of TBD, risk perceptions, and pre

Morphological and Chemical Changes in the Hemolymph of the Wax Moth Galleria mellonella Infected by the Entomopathogenic Fungus Conidiobolus coronatus.

Hemolymph enables communication between organs in insects and ensures necessary coordination and homeostasis. Its composition can provide important information about the physiological state of an insect and can have diagnostic significance, which might be particularly important in the case of harmful insects subjected to biological control. Galleria mellonella Linnaeus 1758 (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a global pest to honey bee colonies. The hemolymph of its larvae was examined after infection with the soil fungus Conidiobolus coronatus (Constantin) Batko 1964 (Entomophthorales). It was found

The effect of anti-sandfly saliva antibodies on Phlebotomus argentipes and Leishmania donovani.

A study was undertaken to find the effect of repeated bites of the sandfly, Phlebotomus argentipes, on its host as well as on the vector itself. The study also aimed to find the effect of the immune serum on the parasite, Leishmania donovani, naturally transmitted by the vector. The hamster which was exposed to sandfly feeding showed good antibody titre against the sandfly salivary-gland secretion, which indicates that the salivary-gland secretion is immunogenic in nature. The result also revealed that the feeding attraction of the females, which has been expressed as the percentage of engorge

Temperature-dependence of life history in an edible cricket: Implications for optimising mass-rearing.

Optimisation of life history and organismal performance underlies success in insect mass-rearing. Rearing schedules, resource use and production yield depend on many aspects of insect fitness and performance within and across generations, such as growth, development, longevity, and fecundity, which are all temperature dependent. Despite this general understanding, we often lack species-specific information needed to make informed decisions about manipulating rearing temperatures to optimise insect growth and development. Here, we characterise the effects of rearing temperature on nymph to adul

Transcriptomic Insights into the Insect Immune Response to Nematode Infection.

Insects in nature interact with a wide variety of microbial enemies including nematodes. These include entomopathogenic nematodes that contain mutualistic bacteria and together are able to infect a broad range of insects in order to complete their life cycle and multiply, filarial nematodes which are vectored by mosquitoes, and other parasitic nematodes. Entomopathogenic nematodes are commonly used in biological control practices and they form excellent research tools for understanding the genetic and functional bases of nematode pathogenicity and insect anti-nematode immunity. In addition, cl

Body condition constrains immune function in field populations of female Australian plague locust Chortoicetes terminifera.

The insect innate immune system comprises both humoral and cellular defence responses. In the laboratory, the insect immune system is well characterized. In the field, however, little is known about the role of constitutive insect immune function and how it varies within and between populations. Laboratory studies suggest that host nutrition has significant impact upon insect immune function. Thus, the rationale for this study was to sample natural populations of the Australian Plague Locust Chortoicetes terminifera to establish whether locust body condition (as determined by protein and lipid

Transgenic Metarhizium rapidly kills mosquitoes in a malaria-endemic region of Burkina Faso.

Malaria control efforts require implementation of new technologies that manage insecticide resistance. Metarhizium pingshaense provides an effective, mosquito-specific delivery system for potent insect-selective toxins. A semifield trial in a MosquitoSphere (a contained, near-natural environment) in Soumousso, a region of Burkina Faso where malaria is endemic, confirmed that the expression of an insect-specific toxin (Hybrid) increased fungal lethality and the likelihood that insecticide-resistant mosquitoes would be eliminated from a site. Also, as Hybrid-expressing M. pingshaense is effectiv

Protective netting as a barrier against the X-disease phytoplasma vector Colladonus reductus (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) in cherry orchards.

X-disease, caused by "Candidatus Phytoplasma pruni," poses a significant economic threat to the stone fruit industry, causing the removal of vast cherry acreage in Washington State. The most abundant vector in these orchards is the leafhopper Colladonus reductus (Van Duzee). Growers need season-long preventative alternatives to insecticides for a robust integrated pest management program. Thus, this study evaluated the efficacy of protective netting as a barrier to C. reductus. Between 2024 and 2025, 3 field trials were conducted testing 4 types of netting (20% shade, 30% shade, Mesh 25, and M

Bacteriocyte-specific antimicrobial peptides regulate the Rhynchophorus ferrugineus-Nardonella symbiosis and represent novel targets for symbiosis-based pest control.

BACKGROUND: Many beetles require tyrosine supplementation from endosymbiotic bacteria for exoskeleton synthesis. Weevils harbor the ancient endosymbiont Nardonella within specialized bacteriocytes, a mutualistic association maintained for >125 million years in which the bacterium exclusively preserves tyrosine biosynthetic capability. The red palm weevil, one of the world's most destructive invasive pests causing widespread devastation to palm industries across continents, depends on its Nardonella endosymbiont for survival. Disrupting this obligate symbiosis represents a promising pest contro

Factors influencing vector control for onchocerciasis in Sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review.

Onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness, remains a significant public health challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the blackfly serves as its primary vector. This review synthesizes evidence on the factors influencing vector control programs in the region. A search was conducted in the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus to identify factors which influence the successful implementation of vector control programs in sub-Saharan Africa, covering studies published between 1 January 2000 and 31 March 2025, including both experimental and quasi-experimental designs. Novel methyl salicylate derivatives containing nerol and citronellol moieties for improved Acyrthosiphon pisum management.

BACKGROUND: Aphids have primarily been controlled by traditional chemical insecticides over the past decades, leading to health risks for honey bees. By contrast, plant volatiles such as methyl salicylate (MeSA) can not only repel aphids, but also attract their natural enemies, while being safe for bees, thus showing a promising prospect in aphid management. Our research group has previously discovered more active compounds for aphid management based on MeSA. Therefore, further structural optimization with MeSA as the lead compound is worth investigating. RESULTS: Through the structural combi

Modelled impact of Tiny Targets on the distribution and abundance of riverine tsetse.

BACKGROUND: The insecticide-treated baits known as Tiny Targets are one of the cheapest means of controlling riverine species of tsetse flies, the vectors of the trypanosomes that cause sleeping sickness in humans. Models of the efficacy of these targets deployed near rivers are potentially useful in planning control campaigns and highlighting the principles involved. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To evaluate the potential of models, we produced a simple non-seasonal model of the births, deaths, mobility and aging of tsetse, and we programmed it to simulate the impact of seven years of targ

Effectiveness of orally-delivered double-stranded RNA on gene silencing in the stinkbug Plautia stali.

Development of a reliable method for RNA interference (RNAi) by orally-delivered double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is potentially promising for crop protection. Considering that RNAi efficiency considerably varies among different insect species, it is important to seek for the practical conditions under which dsRNA-mediated RNAi effectively works against each pest insect. Here we investigated RNAi efficiency in the brown-winged green stinkbug Plautia stali, which is notorious for infesting various fruits and crop plants. Microinjection of dsRNA into P. stali revealed high RNAi efficiency-injection o

Fifty years of tsetse control in Tanzania: challenges and prospects for the future.

Tsetse flies are the vectors of trypanosomes, the causative organisms of trypanosomiasis, nagana, in animals and sleeping sickness in man. In Tanzania, tsetse transmitted trypanosomiasis is one of the most important disease affecting both animals and humans. About 40% of land suitable for grazing and areas with high agricultural potential are currently tsetse infested. It is estimated that about 4.4 million livestock and 4 million people are at risk of contracting tsetse borne trypanosomiasis. African animal trypanosomiasis (AAT) causes loss in animals due to mortality and reduced milk yield,

Environmental management for the control of Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811), (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) in Costa Rica: a pilot project.

An ecological control method, using environmental management operations, based on biological and behavioral characteristics of Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811), was implemented as a pilot project in an area of Costa Rica where the bug is prevalent. The sample was represented by 20 houses with peridomestic colonies (two also had indoor infestation), divided in two equivalent groups of 10 each. In one group we intervened the houses, i.e. all objects or materials that were serving as artificial ecotopes for the bugs were removed, and the second group was used as control houses. After a year o

Breeding habitats of vector sandflies and their control in India.

In India Phlebotomus argentipes and Phlebotomus papatasi are the proven and suspected vectors of visceral leishmaniasis respectively. In the past, only a few samples from the field yielded sandfly immatures though there were many adults in the vicinity. This might be because of dearth of information on the various factors influencing the oviposition of the gravid females as well as survival and development of immatures. Therefore, available information on these aspects has been reviewed so as to highlight the imperative of undertaking further studies on the ecology of immatures in field condit
