Methane conversion into methanol by biotechnological processes: Challenges and perspectives.

Methane is one of the most prominent greenhouse gases contributing to global warming. It is also a valuable source of energy and a raw material for the production of chemicals. Gas-to-liquid technologies for its conversion into methanol are particularly interesting, methanol being considered as a platform molecule for the chemical industry and a prospective fuel for low-emission transport. Methane oxidation into methanol is up to day carried out industrially under energy-consuming conditions, associated to significant CO2 emissions. Methanotrophic catalysis has arisen as a promising greener al

Electrochemically synthesized Cu-Mg mesh catalysts for methanol steam reforming.

Methanol steam reforming (MSR) represents a cost-effective method for hydrogen production. Structured catalysts, which exhibit strong resistance to frequent mechanical vibrations and suitability for on-board MSR, are somewhat complicated to fabricate. Herein, we synthesized and investigated copper-magnesium (Cu-Mg) mesh-type structured catalysts by a modified cycling chronopotentiometry method. The Cu-Mg-mesh catalyst was electro-synthesized in a Mg(NO3)2 electrolyte and achieved a H2 yield of 205.82 mmol (gcat h)-1 at 250 °C and a WHSVMeOH of 12 h-1, whereas the unpromoted Cu-mesh catalyst pr

Chain Formation and Addition Drive the Debye Relaxation of Methanol.

The Debye relaxation in alcohols has generally been attributed to "collective motion" driven by hydrogen bonding, but the molecular mechanism of relaxation has yet to be conclusively identified. Taking methanol as a model alcohol, we apply an oscillating electric field in molecular dynamics simulations to directly evaluate the molecular motions and identify the mechanism. Methanol forms short-lived chains of hydrogen-bonded molecules through the hydroxyl group. We find that the hydroxyl group rotates in response to the field with a frequency dependence that tracks the Debye peak, implicating t

Regulation of Relay Catalytic Mechanism for Efficient Methanol Oxidation Reaction.

The methanol oxidation reaction serves as a representative model for multistep catalytic processes involving diverse intermediates. Catalyst design strategies that spatially arrange discrete active sites, analogous to relay runners, facilitate the sequential activation of reaction steps, thereby enhancing overall catalytic efficiency compared to single-site catalysts. This approach effectively decouples complex reaction networks into a sequence of coordinated elementary steps, thereby enhancing the production efficiency of the target products. Here, we propose a relay catalysis paradigm throug

A nickel gallium oxide chlorophyll mimic for green methanol synthesis.

Light-driven methanol synthesis from CO2 provides a sustainable fuel source and approach to carbon neutralization. Mimicking natural photosynthesis could improve gas-solid photocatalytic efficiency, but it remains highly challenging due to the absence of well-organized mass and charge transfer networks in artificial materials. Herein, we report a chlorophyll-mimicking, nano-pigment nickel gallium oxide, which facilitates discrete light/dark reactions and proton-mediated charge transfer for efficient photocatalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. This nano-pigment features surface frustrated

Mechanism of methanol steam reforming with inverse ZrO2/Cu catalyst.

The highly active inverse ZrO2/Cu catalyst used in methanol steam reforming reaction was confirmed by XRD and HRTEM. Control experiments and characterization results consistently differentiated surface and interfacial hydroxyl groups. For the catalyst enriched in interfacial OH, the reaction preferentially proceeded through the formate pathway. However, for the catalyst enriched in surface OH, methyl formate pathway preferentially existed on its surface. This work reveals the role of OH plays in the methanol steam reforming reaction, preliminarily establishing foundation for the investigation

Methylations with methanol via bioinspired catalytic C-O bond cleavage.

Nature has a delicate system for catalysis due to optimization through evolution, which often displays unparalleled efficiency and selectivity. "Learning from nature" is a popular and effective approach in designing alternative reactions and catalysts when traditional strategies fail. Here, we demonstrate that it can be highly rewarding to consider nature's repertoire of catalysis during the effort to facilitate the challenging heterolytic C-O bond cleavage of methanol (MeOH). Inspired by MeOH metabolism by methyltransferase complex in certain methanogenic microorganisms that contain a Brønste

Carbon dioxide conversion to methanol on a PdCo bimetallic catalyst.

The CO2 conversion to methanol (CO2-to-CH3OH conversion) is a promising way to resolve greenhouse gas emissions and global energy shortage. Many catalysts are of interest in improving the efficiency of the conversion reaction. The PdCo alloy is a potential catalyst, but no research is available to clarify the CO2-to-CH3OH reaction mechanism of this alloy. Here, using density functional theory combined with the thermodynamic model, we elucidated the reaction mechanism of the CO2-to-CH3OH conversion on the Pd-skin/PdCo alloy catalyst via thermo- and electro-catalytic processes. The adsorption of

Process Optimization for Production of Persimmon Wine with Lower Methanol.

Persimmon wine has various nutritional elements and high commercial potential. However, the high content of methanol, which is derived from the fruit's pectin, always hinders persimmon wine production. To reduce the methanol level in the wine, the effects of persimmon cultivar, starter, pectinase, and pretreatment methods were investigated via single-factor and orthogonal experiments. The persimmon cultivar 'MaoKui' was finally used throughout the study owing to its lowest pectin concentration (24.5 g/kg). The best treatment conditions against the persimmon pulp were pectinase (0.04 g/kg) at 3

Methanol extract of Elsholtzia fruticosa promotes 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation.

Elsholtzia fruticosa (EF) is present in tropical regions throughout South Asian countries as well as the Himalayas. Although it has been used as a traditional medicine to treat digestive, respiratory, and inflammatory issues, its effect on preadipocyte differentiation is unknown. In this study, we examined the effects of a methanol extract prepared from EF on the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Cell differentiation was assessed by microscopic observation and oil-red O staining. The expression of adipogenic and lipogenic genes, including PPARγ and C/EBPα, was measured by western blot a

Amino Acid-Based Ionic Liquids-Aided CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol.

This study explored the use of amino acid-based ionic liquids to facilitate the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into methanol through catalytic hydrogenation. Combining tetrabutylammonium L-argininate (TBA⋅Arg) with the ruthenium Ru-MACHO-BH complex allowed achieving significant yields of methanol under optimized conditions, with a turnover number (TON) up to 700. By systematically varying key reaction parameters, we demonstrated that the TBA⋅Arg ionic liquid promotes the efficient hydrogenation pathway leading to methanol formation, thus offering a sustainable approach to CO2 valorization.

Engineering Metal-MOF Interfaces for Selective CO₂ Hydrogenation to Methanol.

The hydrogenation of CO₂ to methanol is a promising pathway toward sustainable fuel production and carbon recycling. A key factor in the efficiency of this process lies in the interaction between the metal catalyst and its support. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly effective platforms due to their tunable structures, large surface areas, and ability to form stable interfaces with single-atom metals or metal nanoparticles. These metal-MOF interfaces are crucial for stabilizing active sites, preventing sintering, and enhancing catalytic performance. In this concept paper, we

Photosynthetic microbial fuel cells for methanol treatment using graphene electrodes.

Photosynthetic microbial fuel cells (pMFC) represent a promising approach for treating methanol (CH3OH) wastewater. However, their use is constrained by a lack of knowledge on the extracellular electron transfer capabilities of photosynthetic methylotrophs, especially when coupled with metal electrodes. This study assessed the CH3OH oxidation capabilities of Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1 in two-compartment pMFCs. A 3D nickel (Ni) foam modified with plasma-grown graphene (Gr) was used as an anode, nitrate mineral salts media (NMS) supplemented with 0.1% CH3OH as anolyte, carbon brush as cathode

Biosensor-Based Directed Evolution of Methanol Dehydrogenase from Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus.

Methanol dehydrogenase (Mdh), is a crucial enzyme for utilizing methane and methanol as carbon and energy sources in methylotrophy and synthetic methylotrophy. Engineering of Mdh, especially NAD-dependent Mdh, has thus been actively investigated to enhance methanol conversion. However, its poor catalytic activity and low methanol affinity limit its wider application. In this study, we applied a transcriptional factor-based biosensor for the direct evolution of Mdh from Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus (Lxmdh), which has a relatively high turnover rate and low KM value compared to other wild-type N
