[On The Threshold between Birth and Release: an Integrative Obstetrics Intervention].

Over the past decade, complementary medicine services have been increasingly integrated into departments of obstetrics (i.e., Integrative Obstetrics) throughout Israel. This case report is presented with the goal to learn about a collaborative treatment setting involving a team of obstetric and integrative medicine practitioners. The narrative-qualitative case report analyzed the response of a woman who had been referred to an Integrative Obstetrics service after giving birth. The patient was hospitalized in the postnatal obstetric department, where she was referred by the chief department nur

Enhancing the care of children with chronic diseases through the narratives of patient, physician, nurse and carer.

We tested the hypothesis that a narrative approach may enhance a bio-psycho-social model (BPS) in caring for chronically ill children. Forty-eight narratives were collected from 12 children with six different medical conditions, their mothers, physicians, and nurses. By a textual analysis, narratives were classified on their predominant focus as disease (biological focus), illness (psychologic focus), or sickness (social focus). Sixty-one percent of narrative' text were classified as illness, 28% as disease and 11% as sickness. All narratives had a degree of illness focus. Narratives by patien

Memoirs of amnesia: filial narratology of contemporary amnesiac writing in Taiwan.

Contemporary Taiwanese literature has witnessed an emergence of narratives addressing cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease, constituting a significant literary phenomenon that merits scholarly attention. These narratives often delve into intergenerational dynamics between ageing parents, whose stories are untold, and their adult children, who emerge as literary voices. Through the filial narratives of amnesia, writers reveal the relational nature of memory itself. Through theoretical frameworks of Asian gerontology and narrative medicine, this study examines how Taiwanese dementia narrati

Tibetan 'wind' and 'wind' illnesses: towards a multicultural approach to health and illness.

This article discusses the Tibetan notion of rlung, usually translated as: 'wind', but perhaps better understood as a close equivalent of pneuma in the Greek tradition, or qi in the Chinese tradition. The article focuses on the way rlung provides a useful prism through which concepts of health, illness and disease may be observed in a cross-cultural perspective. An analysis of syndromes linked with rlung in a Tibetan cultural context illuminates some of the ways in which culture determines particular syndromes. The article raises a number of questions which are relevant for a more general mult

Racial and Ethnic Patient Care Disparities in Anesthesiology: History, Current State, and a Way Forward.

Disparities in patient care and outcomes are well-documented in medicine but have received comparatively less attention in anesthesiology. Those disparities linked to racial and ethnic identity are pervasive, with compelling evidence in operative anesthesiology, obstetric anesthesiology, pain medicine, and critical care. This narrative review presents an overview of disparities in perioperative patient care that is grounded in historical context followed by potential solutions for mitigating disparities and inequities.

Facilitating self-healing in anthroposophic psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The fields of complementary and alternative medicine and psychotherapy have many similar characteristics. This study investigates the self-healing capacity of the patient as one shared characteristic and as an important mechanism of change. CASE REPORT: This investigation adopts naturalistic qualitative case study methodology to describe the treatment of a patient in his late fifties who also had an adjustment disorder with mixed anxiety and depressed moods. The data was collected retrospectively from existing data sets and was analysed using narrative analysis and the analysis of

Fertility planning for women in medicine: a call for an active approach.

BACKGROUND: Women in medicine often delay childbearing due to the competing priorities of training, finding a partner, and waiting for the "right time." Unfortunately, the steep decline in female fertility during a woman's mid to late 30s also often coincides with the completion of residency and/or fellowship training. Data show that women in medicine elect to have children later in life and that at least 1 in 4 female physicians suffer from infertility, a higher rate than in nonphysicians. It is essential to escalate the dialogue regarding family planning for female physicians and trainees.

[Narrative Ethicsfrom the Three Attributes of Life: Conceptual Analysis and Principle Construction].

The emergence of narrative medicine offers new possibilities for the research of bioethics. This paper proposes the concept of "life narrative ethics" and uses the three life attributes-natural life, spiritual life, and social life-as an analytical framework to reveal the ethical demands of life narratives in the finiteness of the physical body, the rupture of self-identity,and the transformation of social roles. On this basis, this paper distills four core principles:centering on life stories, dignity integration, interpretive humility, and reciprocal narrative relationships. These principles respectiv

Myth and medicine: a historical perspective on caesarean section in Ferdowsi's Shahnameh.

Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, composed around 1000 CE, contains a remarkable narrative of the birth of the Persian hero Rostam, which describes a procedure resembling a caesarean section, termed 'Rostam-zad' or 'Rostamina'. This account, predating Roman associations with the procedure, offers insights into ancient Persian medical practices, including surgical techniques, anaesthetic methods and postoperative care. The story details a lateral incision, the use of a cannabis and camphor concoction for pain management and suturing with a healing salve, culminating in maternal survival-a rare outcome in a

When psychedelic discourse meets local narrative: Selective uptake of psychedelic meanings surrounding mad honey in Nepal.

AIMS: 'Mad honey' is produced when bees collect nectar from Rhododendron species containing grayanotoxins, naturally occurring diterpenoid toxins that can produce dose-dependent intoxication. It has long been embedded in Nepalese medicinal and ritual practices but has recently become part of global psychedelic discourse. This study examined how globally circulating discourse and local narrative practices interact in shaping meanings of intoxication, using mad honey as a case. More broadly, it assessed the analytical value of distinguishing between discursive circulation and narrative uptake.

Narrative pedagogies in cranial nerve anatomy: Comparing mythological and sports-based approaches with traditional teaching.

This study used a mixed methods randomized controlled experimental design to evaluate the effectiveness of narrative-based versus traditional pedagogy in teaching cranial nerve anatomy to medicine students. Eighty-eight students who had completed a previous course on the nervous system were randomized into three groups: a control group receiving standard theoretical and practical anatomy instruction, a group using a mythological narrative ("Supper of Gods"), and a group using an animated sports-themed narrative ("Head Coach Hypoglossus"). Knowledge acquisition was assessed using pre- and post-

Psychosomatic Futurities: Cripping the Future of Cultural Psychiatry in a Posthuman Landscape.

This paper explores the ways in which cultural psychiatry can contribute to the understanding of the larger culture of medicine, through critical engagements with dualisms that structure medicine's curative imaginary-a social imaginary that positions disability as a deviation, a tragedy, and a problem to be solved. Developed as an experimental form of image/text analysis from a sensory ethnographic study of solid organ transplantation and drawing on ethnographic interviews, art workshops, and visual fieldnotes, our analysis tracks the bifurcated logic of cure through vignettes and fragments, b

PSMA-Targeted Theranostics in Glioblastoma Multiforme: Current Evidence and Future Perspectives.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common brain tumor in the adult population, and it is characterized by poor prognosis; thus, new treatment strategies are strongly needed. Precision medicine is a rapidly growing field in oncology that identifies specific molecular features of tumor cells and allows theranostic strategies (combining diagnosis and therapy). In nuclear medicine, prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) represents an interesting molecular target in theranostics, considering its involvement in the neoangiogenesis of many kinds of tumors, including GBM. In this narrative r

Seeing pain, trauma and anxiety: the visual politics of credibility in the Really Strange series.

Steve Haines' and Sophie Standing's Really Strange comics (Pain is Really Strange (2015), Trauma is Really Strange (2015) and Anxiety is Really Strange (2018)) blend graphical narrative with medical science to tackle phenomena often deemed 'invisible' or medically perplexing. Using a visual medical humanities lens, the article situates the Really Strange series in the context of graphical medicine and explores how visual and narrative strategies can both democratise medical knowledge and inadvertently reinforce certain 'regimes of proof'. A core focus is the credibility problem surrounding chr
