This case report describes an adolescent patient with an open bite and severely narrowed maxillary dentition and hypertrophic palatine tonsils, treated efficiently with rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and subsequent orthodontic tooth alignment using fixed appliances. The treatment demonstrates that RME can be effective for the correction of a severely narrowed maxillary arch, as well as, in this case, the correction of an anterior open bite in an adolescent patient where no substantial vertical skeletal discrepancy existed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the movement of the tip and the dorsal surface of the tongue during deglutition in patients with anterior open bite using cineradiography. The subjects were 10 female patients with anterior open bites and 10 female controls with normal overbites. By cineradiography we established 7 stages of tongue movement and bolus position during deglutition and analyzed the tongue position, tongue movement and the time. The tongue-tip position was more protrusive during deglutition in anterior open bite than in the controls. After the head of the bolus arrived a

Dental malocclusions are deviations from normalities due to the inadequate growth and development of the dental arch which provides functional changes to the stomatognathic system. The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the electromyographic activity (EMG) the masseter and temporalis muscles, strength of the orofacial tissues and occlusal force of children with anterior open bite (n = 15) and posterior crossbite (n = 20), 7 days after the removal of the orthodontic apparatus. A fixed horizontal palatal crib was used in the treatment of anterior open bite and the fixed appliances Hy

AIM: To evaluate the maxillary dentition effects of the extrusion arch for anterior open bite (AOB) correction in mixed dentition patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen subjects with an initial mean age of 9.17 ± 1.03 years presenting with dentoalveolar AOB (mean - 1.28 ± 1.46 mm) and normal facial pattern (FMA = 25.76°) were treated with an extrusion arch. The mean treatment period was 7.79 ± 2.58 months. Lateral cephalograms and dental models were taken before (T0) and after the correction of AOB (T1). Data were analyzed using paired t test to evaluate differences between T0 and T1. For

There have been few reports of mouth closing disturbances in the final phase of occlusion caused by the posterior thickness of the retrodiscal tissue. Two such cases are described here. The first was a 70-year-old female suffering from a painless mouth closing disturbance on the right side of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). She complained of a feeling like there was an air cushion. The second case was a 51-year-old male with a painless mouth closing disturbance on the left side of the TMJ. In both cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed enlargement of the posterior joint space on t

A previous attempt to locate the root canal system in the maxillary left central incisor with a bur created a perforating root defect at the level of the alveolar crest. The patient received root canal therapy. Next, vertical root extrusion was chosen to expose sound tooth structure apical to the defect so that a crown could be constructed. With an anterior open bite, the natural crown was left intact and it was possible to position the anchor bar in an incisal and lingual position, maintaining esthetics for the patient during both the extrusive and stabilization phases of treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Determine the association between nun-nutritive sucking habits and anterior open bite in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the PRISMA guidelines. A systematic searched of four databases was conducted through the end of February 2025. Study designs included observational and interventional studies. Nun-nutritive sucking habits was evaluated in three categories: (1) ever versus never; (2) longer periods versus shorter periods; (3) daily versus not daily. We considered anterior open bite as the outcome. Based on meta-analyses, the poole

A 26-year-old woman had a masticatory dysfunction, straight profile, retrognathic maxilla and mandible, and Angle's class I with a tendency to class III malocclusion on both sides, with bilateral posterior crossbites and a 4 mm anterior open bite. Orthognathic surgery and orthodontic camouflage with and without tooth extraction were considered as treatment options. The patient's preferred method of treatment was orthodontic camouflage without extraction. The transpalatal arch had been placed for the bilateral molars' derotation. After 3 months, the upper segmented fixed appliance was implanted

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Newly developed temporary anchorage devices (TADs) serve a strong orthodontic anchorage to intrude molars for correction of anterior open bite (AOB). We measured cephalometric changes in skeletal open bite patients which developed subsequently to temporomandibular joint disorders with bilateral point contacts at terminal molars.
METHODS: We retrospectively recruited 32 patients who had been treated their TMD before orthodontic correction (overbite: -3.14 ± 1.86 mm). Partial orthodontic appliances were used to intrude posterior teeth using TADs until positive OB obtained (T

PURPOSE: This systematic review aimed to assess the effects of orthopedic functional appliances for anterior open bite (AOB) in primary or mixed dentition children.
METHODS: A search for randomized controlled trials (RCT) was conducted in November 2020 in electronic databases with no data or language restrictions. Primary outcomes were skeletal cephalometric variables and adverse events. We used the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool to assess methodological quality and the GRADE approach to assess the certainty of the evidence.
RESULTS: We identified five RCTs (220 participants). Very low certainty

Amelogenesis imperfecta is a rare hereditary disorder that affects dental enamel and is often associated with an anterior open bite. Orthodontic treatment of a 16-year-old female patient with hypocalcified amelogenesis imperfecta and a 9-mm anterior open bite was presented. Radiographic examination revealed a steep mandibular plane angle, an increased lower face height, a Class II skeletal pattern, and a convex profile. Additionally, the patient had stainless steel crowns on all upper and lower posterior teeth and composite veneers on the upper anterior teeth. The patient was treated nonsurgic

INTRODUCTION: Amelogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disease, characterized by a structural defect of the enamel and has variable clinical expressions. It can be isolated or associated as part of a syndrome. Three clinical forms exist: hypoplastic, hypomature and hypomineralized.
DISCUSSION: Enamel fragility involves dentin exposure and dental hypersensitivity as frequent consequences. Some severe forms are mainly associated with an anterior open bite. The care of these patients constitutes a real challenge for the dentist. Materials et Methods: A literature review was carried out using the Pub

Skeletal Class II high-angle open bite is often accompanied by osteoarthrosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ-OA). This type of malocclusion is challenging to correct, and it has been reported that patients with TMJ-OA treated with orthognathic surgery often experience skeletal relapse and a poor prognosis. This case report describes the treatment of a 25-year-old woman with retrognathia and TMJ-OA, whose masseter and temporal muscle activities were weak. Temporary anchorage devices were placed in the maxilla and the mandible, and the first molars were intruded. We used improved superelast

Anterior open bite (AOB) is one of the most difficult malocclusions to treat and maintain in orthodontics. Malocclusion occurs more frequently in children with disabilities than in healthy children. Surgical correction of severe AOB often requires maxillary impaction to reduce the anterior facial height. The zygomatic buttress area could be a valuable anchorage site to achieve intrusion of maxillary posterior teeth. A 16-year-old boy with mental retardation showing signs of persistence of infantile behavior, decreased cognitive functioning, and psychomotor skill deficits (no identified syndrom
