BACKGROUND: Tetrahydrocannabinol (cannabis) and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) are psychomimetic agents that induce impairment of sensory perception. Illusions and hallucinations are mostly visual. Most frequently the visual phenomena occur in conjunction with drug abuse.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three previously drug-addicted patients were examined for either persisting or spontaneously recurrent visual phenomena. Two patients complained of persisting visual illusions (vibrations, dyskinetopsia and impaired depth perception) during more than 12 months after an excessive use of cannabis. The t

OBJECTIVES: Threshold for generation of magnetophosphenes has been reported to be lower in migraine. We compared the threshold for eliciting phosphenes by transcranial magnetic stimulation and the ability to visually trigger headache in a select group of individuals with migraine with and without aura to normal controls.
METHODS: Transcranial magnetic stimulation was performed using the Cadwell MES-10 stimulator. A circular coil, 9.5 cm in diameter, was applied to the occipital scalp (7 cm above the inion). Stimulator intensity was increased in 10% increments until subjects reported visual ph

Mirror therapy is a therapy to treat patients with pain syndromes or hemiparesis after stroke. However, the underlying neurophysiologic mechanisms are not clearly understood. In order to determine the effect of a mirror-like illusion (MIR) on brain activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, 20 healthy right-handed subjects were examined. A MIR was induced by a digital horizontal inversion of the subjects' filmed hand. Optodes were placed on the primary motor cortex (M1) and the occipito-parietal cortex (precuneus, PC). Regions of interest (ROI) were defined a priori based on previou

It is well established that seeing color activates the ventral occipital cortex, including the fusiform and lingual gyri, but less is known about whether the region directly relates to conscious color perception. We investigated the neural correlates of conscious color perception in the ventral occipital cortex. To vary conscious color perception with the stimuli-remaining constant, we took advantage of the McCollough effect, an illusory color effect that is contingent on the orientation of grating stimuli. Subjects were exposed to a specific combination of chromatic grating patterns for 10 mi

A 38-year-old woman with a right posterior temporo-occipital brain tumor developed partial seizures with illusory motion perception of environmental objects going from the center to the periphery within her left visual field. Subdural EEG recordings during visual seizures revealed onsets in the right temporo-parieto-occipital junction. Her ictal visual distortion was probably caused by activation of V5, an area involved in motion perception. Given that the tumor location corresponds with the ictal onset in the V5 area, and the semiology of her seizures, this case supports that epileptic dysfun

Studies of hemispatial neglect suggest that some perceptual processes still operate on contralesional stimuli independent from spatial attention or awareness. Here we examined whether preattentive processing in extrastriate areas may group unconnected elements inducing illusory contours despite neglect. While it has been debated whether illusory contours arise from preattentive grouping or higher cognitive processes, neurophysiological studies show that neurones in secondary visual cortex (V2) can code for illusory contours. Twelve patients with right hemisphere damage and left neglect were te

In the present study, we investigated how observers' control of stimulus change affects temporal and spatial aspects of visual perception. We compared the illusory flash-lag effects for automatic movement of the stimulus with stimulus movement that was controlled by the observers' active manipulation of a computer mouse (Experiments 1, 2, and 5), a keyboard (Experiment 3), or a trackball (Experiment 4). We found that the flash-lag effect was significantly reduced when the observer was familiar with the directional relationship between the mouse movement and stimulus movement on a front paralle

Three disorders of facial recognition and perception in acute schizophrenia and mescaline-induced psychosis are described and illustrated using original clinical and experimental material: "affective prosopagnosia" or stress-related dysfunctional face recognition; "physiognomization" of the environment or persistent illusions and hallucinations of nonspecific faces; and the "mirror phenomenon" or the experience of inner alienation from one's reflected face, which is perceived as independently alive, sinister, and generally physically distorted. It is proposed that neuropsychology suggests rela

OBJECTIVES: From a series of glimpses, we perceive a seamless and richly detailed visual world. Cerebral damage, however, can destroy this illusion. In the case of Bálint's syndrome, the visual world is perceived erratically, as a series of single objects. The goal of this review is to explore a range of psychological and anatomical explanations for this striking visual disorder and to propose new directions for interpreting the findings in Bálint's syndrome and related cerebral disorders of visual processing.
METHODS: Bálint's syndrome is reviewed in the light of current concepts and methodo

PURPOSE: Superior oblique myokymia (SOM) is an uncommon disorder characterized by episodic monocular oscillopsia. Several medications have been reported to be of benefit for some patients with this condition, but the efficacy of medical treatment has not been well established and little long-term follow-up data are available. The purpose of this study was to better clarify the role of medical therapy in the management of SOM.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients with this disorder seen in an outpatient neuro-ophthalmology clinic. The diagnosis of SOM was based on a history of episodic

Identifying a facial feature (e.g. the eyes) is influenced by the position and identity of other features (e.g. the mouth) of the face, supporting the view that an individual face is represented as a whole in the human brain. To clarify how early in the time-course of face processing this holistic individual representation is accessed we recorded event-related potentials during an adaptation paradigm of the composite face illusion (CFI). Observers performed a matching task on top halves of two faces presented sequentially. For each face pair, top and bottom face halves could be both identical,

PURPOSE: To determine whether testing for the Pulfrich phenomenon (PP) can be used as a tool to assess the need for and optimal timing of second-eye cataract surgery.
METHODS: A total of 61 patients with logMAR 0 visual acuity (VA) after cataract surgery in one eye and logMAR 0.2-0.7 VA in the other eye were tested for PP using a computer-generated oscillating target at Baskent University Hospital. Only patients who had no ophthalmologic or systemic problem that could cause PP were included. In all, 15 normal patients with logMAR 0 VA in both eyes served as controls. The main outcome measures

A recent study by Slaghuis. Lovegrove and Davidson (1994) found that visual and language processing differences were concurrent in a group of preadolescent dyslexic. In the present study, two experiments are reported that investigate the concurrence and continuity of visual and language processing differences in groups of young and adult dyslexics on a measure of visual processing and a measure of phonological coding. The visual processing task in the present experiments was a measure of Ternus apparent movement which was used as an index of the duration of visible persistence. Ternus apparent

When the bottom halves of two faces differ, people's behavioral judgment of the identical top halves of those faces is impaired: they report that the top halves are different, and/or take more time than usual to provide a response. This behavioral measure is known as the composite face effect (CFE) and has traditionally been taken as evidence that faces are perceived holistically. Recently, however, it has been claimed that this effect is driven almost entirely by decisional, rather than perceptual, factors (Richler, Gauthier, Wenger, & Palmeri, 2008). To disentangle the contribution of percep

PRÉCIS: Patients with glaucoma demonstrated deficiencies in their ability to process multisensory information when compared with controls, with those deficiencies being related to glaucoma severity. Impaired multisensory integration (MSI) may affect the quality of life in individuals with glaucoma and may contribute to the increased prevalence of falls and driving safety concerns. Therapeutic possibilities to influence cognition in glaucoma should be explored.
PURPOSE: Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve that has also been linked to cognitive health decline. This study

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The Social Rank Recognition Test (SRRT) assesses social rank recognition based on social context (SC) and physical characteristics (PC), processed by distinct neural systems via bottom-up and top-down processes. Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) encompass biases in predictive processing, leading to overestimation of prior precision. We hypothesized that patients with SSD would show augmented reliance on both social context and physical characteristics when judging social rank.
STUDY DESIGN: Forty-one healthy subjects (HCs) and 41 remitted patients with SSD comp

This review deals with two syndromes, oscillopsia and visual vertigo. Oscillopsia is the illusion of oscillation of the visual surroundings. For diagnosis purposes one should ask, when does the oscillopsia occur? If oscillopsia is only present during head (or whole body) movements, the likely underlying cause is a bilateral defect in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). The more common causes are post meningitic vestibular damage, gentamicin ototoxicity or bilateral idiopathic vestibular failure. When oscillopsia develops after specific head positions, it is usually due to a positional nystagmus

Next to neurogenic inflammation and pathological sympathetic-afferent coupling, functional imaging studies have shown the crucial role of maladaptive cortical reorgansation in the pathophysiology of CRPS. Bilateral neuroplastic alterations in the somatosensory cortex seem to play a substantial role in the dysfunctional sensory processing of stimuli. The aim was to investigate the multimodal integration of sensory and visual stimuli into the body scheme and the influence of higher cognitive body representation in the integration of multimodal schema, body relevant stimuli in patients with CRPS.

Eight high-potency heavy cannabis smokers who fulfilled DSM-IV-TR criteria for cannabis dependence sought treatment for outpatient detoxification. During routine psychiatric interview they reported the presence of visual disturbances when intoxicated and no prior history of LSD use. They all communicated the persistence of visual disturbances after ceasing cannabis use. Seven categories of visual disturbances were described when staring at stationary and moving objects: visual distortions, distorted perception of distance, illusions of movement of stationary and moving objects, color intensifi

We present a historical account of the story behind the famous hawk/goose experiments of Lorenz and Tinbergen in a wider context of cognitive ethology. We discuss their significance, for ethological experimentation in general, and specifically for understanding innate constraints on cognition. As examples of the continuing significance of the hawk/goose paradigm of selective habituation, we discuss its relation to "exposure therapy" of human phobias and the use of hawk silhouettes as deterrents for songbirds. Finally we rephrase Uexküll's thesis of taxon-specific worlds ("Umwelten") as a "Theo
