Serum amyloid A (SAA) as a biomarker of chronic infection due to boat strike trauma in a free-ranging Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) with incidental polycystic kidneys.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Middle ear prostheses are among the smallest implanted medical devices, with diameters as small as 0.25 mm. Accurate postoperative imaging is critical for assessing prosthesis placement, detecting complications such as dislodgement or extrusion, and informing potential revisions. Conventional energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT) is traditionally used for imaging these implants; however, with the recent clinical use of photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT), further analysis on multiple parameters is required to assess future utility. This study compares the spatial res

Middle Ear Prosthesis with Bactericidal Efficacy-In Vitro Investigation.

Materials used in ossicular replacement prostheses must possess appropriate biological properties, such as biocompatibility, stability, no cytotoxicity. Due to the risk of infection (otitis media and chronic otitis media), it is desirable to use an antibacterial agent for illness prevention during the ossicular reconstruction. The goal of this work was to observe biological properties of a new composite prosthesis made of ABS containing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs 45T). Samples for biological tests and then a prototype of middle ear prosthesis were prepared using injection moulding and extrusi

Mastoid cavity obliteration in revision tympanomastoidectomy with ossiculoplasty for chronic cholesteatomatous otitis media: A retrospective case series on audiological and Patient-reported outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Mastoid cavity obliteration is a surgical strategy rather than an intervention per se, that has been proposed as an effective approach to reduce post-operative complications and long-term morbidity associated with canal wall down (CWD) tympanomastoidectomies. The present study aims to evaluate, in a retrospective case series, audiological, functional, and quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes in adult patients undergoing revision tympanomastoidectomy and ossicular chain reconstruction with mastoid obliteration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on a cohort of p

Evaluation on the possibility of sound conduction independent of tympanic air cavity for severe tympanic adhesion patients by finite element analysis.

Background: For patients with severe tympanic adhesion, reconstructing the tympanic air cavity is often challenging, resulting in poor hearing reconstruction outcomes. Therefore, establishing a sound conduction pathway independent of the tympanic air cavity may be a viable method for reconstructing hearing in these patients. Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of sound conduction independent of the tympanic air cavity (i.e., replacing the original cavity with a tympanic vibrating material) using finite element analysis. Methods: We established a sound-structure

Totally implantable active middle ear implants: ten years' experience at the University of Tübingen.

Active middle ear implants do not produce acoustic sounds but, rather, micromechanical vibrations. The stimulating signal does not leave the transducer as sound, but as a mechanical vibration, directly coupled to the auditory system and bypassing the normal route via air. In this paper, we review our experience with the TICA and the Carina middle ear implants. Both are totally implantable and are coupled to the ossicular chain or to perilymph. The design requirements for electronic hearing implants for patients with conductive hearing loss differ from those for sensorineural hearing loss. Cond

Study on the Prosthesis Structural Design and Vibration Characteristics Based on the Conduction Effect of Human Middle Ear.

As a bridge from the sound signal in the air to the sound perception of the inner ear auditory receptor, the tympanic membrane and ossicular chain of the middle ear transform the sound signal in the outer ear through two gas-solid and solid-liquid conversions. In addition, through the lever principle formed by three auditory ossicle structure, the sound was concentrated and amplified to the inner ear. However, the sound transmission function of the middle ear will be decreased by disease, genetic, or trauma. Hence, using middle ear prosthesis to replace the damaged ossicles can restore the con

Effect of length variations in 3D-printed middle-ear prostheses on ossicular chain mobility.

BACKGROUND: Patient-specific 3D printing may improve ossiculoplasty, yet the mechanical tolerance to prosthesis length remains poorly quantified. We evaluated how systematic lengthening of a custom 3D-printed incus replacement affects middle-ear mobility in human temporal bones. METHODS: Five fresh-frozen human temporal bones were prepared through a posterior tympanotomy. Cone-beam CT was used to reconstruct specimen-specific ossicular geometry; the incus was digitally removed and a malleus-stapes prosthesis was designed and printed by stereolithography. For each specimen, three prostheses we
