Telemedicine for Family Planning: A Scoping Review.

Telemedicine has the potential to increase access to family planning. The most common application involved the use of text message reminders and mobile apps. Text messaging increased knowledge in a variety of settings, but had no effect on contraceptive uptake and use. Two randomized studies found that text messaging improved continuation of oral contraceptives and injectables. Telemedicine provision of medication abortion included both clinic-to-clinic and direct-to-patient models of care. Telemedicine provision of medication abortion has been found to be equally safe and effective as in-pers

Patient perspectives on drug recalls in the Netherlands: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Drug recalls occur regularly with some resulting in medication switches for patients. Limited research into this topic suggests that drug recalls can lead to anxiety and unrest for patients which in turn can affect confidence in and use of medication. In this context, a better understanding of patient perceptions and communication preferences is essential to adequately handle drug recalls and ensure continued medication adherence and trust. AIM: The aim of this study was to elucidate patients' experiences, perceptions, and preferences regarding drug recalls. METHOD: This qualit

A patient with HIV and tuberculosis with diminished clopidogrel response.

Patients with HIV are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, both as a result of treatment with protease inhibitors and from the disease itself. The medication regimens of patients with HIV and cardiovascular comorbidities are complex and require careful assessment for potentially serious drug-drug interactions. We report a case of clopidogrel non-responsiveness in a patient with HIV, latent tuberculosis and cardiovascular disease with a history of myocardial infarction. To our knowledge, this is the first report of significant drug interactions between clopidogrel, isoniazid and rit

Medication Adherence Patterns for Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: A Mixed Methods Study to Understand Patient and Clinician Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Medication adherence is essential for effective atrial fibrillation (AF) management; however, many patients with AF are non-adherent to these medications, necessitating an understanding of adherence barriers. This mixed-methods study aimed to identify factors influencing oral anticoagulant (OAC) adherence. METHODS: A stratified random sample of 2000 patients with non-valvular AF and OAC prescriptions was surveyed from a large, seven state community health system, capturing barriers and facilitators to medication adherence using an adapted version of the Adherence Starts with Knowl

Deprescribing medications that may increase the risk of hepatic encephalopathy: A qualitative study of patients with cirrhosis and their doctors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Multiple medications are associated with an increased risk of incident hepatic encephalopathy. Despite this known risk, medications such as opioids, benzodiazepines, gabapentin/pregabalin, and/or proton pump inhibitors are increasingly prescribed to persons with cirrhosis. Deprescribing is a promising intervention to reduce the burden of hepatic encephalopathy. Given that deprescribing has not been trialed in cirrhosis, we evaluated the barriers and facilitators to safe and successful deprescribing in cirrhosis. METHODS: We conducted, transcribed, and analyzed semi-struct

Factors associated with HPV vaccine hesitancy among college students: A cross-sectional survey based on 3Cs and structural equation model in China.

Despite the high effectiveness of HPV vaccines in preventing infection, vaccine hesitancy remains a concern, particularly in China. This study aimed to explore college students' attitudes toward HPV vaccination and identify associated factors. Data was collected through a cross-sectional survey using self-administered questionnaires in four cities from May to June 2022. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors. Additionally, an integrated structural equation model (SEM) based on the 3Cs (confidence, convenience, complacency) was developed to understa

Perceptions of Patient-Centered Care among First-Year Medical Students.

Phenomenon: Teaching patient-centered care (PCC) is a key component of undergraduate medical curricula. Prior frameworks of PCC describe multiple domains of patient-centeredness, ranging from interpersonal encounters to systems-level issues. Medical students' perceptions of PCC are thought to erode as they progress through school, but little is known about how students view PCC toward the beginning of training. This study explores the perceptions of PCC among 1st-year medical students to inform curricular development and evaluation. Approach: Medical students participated in semistructured, in

Nonadherence to statins: individualized intervention strategies outside the pill box.

Poor adherence to statin therapy is linked to significantly increased risk of cardiovascular events and death. Unfortunately, adherence to statins is far from optimal. This is an alarming concern for patients prescribed potentially life-saving cholesterol-lowering medication, especially for those at high risk of cardiovascular events. Research on statin adherence has only recently garnered broader attention; hence, major reasons unique to adherence to statin therapy need to be identified as well as suggestions for countermeasures. An integrated approach to minimizing barriers and enhancing fac

[Knowledge regarding Proper Use Guidelines for Benzodiazepines].

Benzodiazepines (BZs) work by agonising gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-BZ-receptor complex and thereby produce sedation and anti-anxiety effects. BZs are commonly used in several clinical areas as hypnotics or anti-anxiety drugs. However, these drugs once supplied by medical institutions often lead to abuse and dependence. Thus it is important for institutions to supply and manage BZs properly. At Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital educational activities about proper use of BZs are performed by not only medical doctors but also pharmacists. We coordinate distribution of leaflets and run

Patterns of psychotropic medication prescribing and potential drug-hormone interactions among transgender and gender-diverse adults within 2 years of hormone therapy.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people have a high prevalence of psychotropic medication use, yet knowledge about the patient-level psychotropic medication burden is limited. TGD patients may take hormone therapy to meet their gender expression goals. Potential drug-hormone interactions exist between psychotropic medications and hormone therapy, requiring increased knowledge about psychotropic medication use for TGD adults undergoing hormone therapy. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the extent of psychotropic medication polypharmacy in a cohort of TGD ad

Addressing patient variability: clinical challenges in the initiation of acne treatment.

Aligning an acne diagnosis with a therapeutic strategy is the cornerstone of acne management. The challenges associated with treatment selection include the type and severity of the patient's acne as well as the mechanism of action of each medication and its ability to address one or more of the pathogenic factors of acne. Beyond the efficacy of treatment, the clinician must be able to address a number of factors that also will influence treatment success, the most important being compliance. The characteristics of treatment (e.g., tolerability profiles, dosing, vehicle) have a profound effect
