Estradiol and mental rotation: relation to dimensionality, difficulty, or angular disparity?

Several studies have reported that performance on spatial rotation tests is better at menses than at high estradiol phases of the menstrual cycle in women. These effects are debated because nearly all reports of menstrual cycle variability have relied on a single test, the Mental Rotations Test (MRT, Vandenberg and Kuse, 1978). In the present study, we investigated key features of the MRT that might be responsible for its association with estradiol levels. We hypothesized that associations could be demonstrated for other tasks that share the same characteristics. Forty-four women ages 20-38 ye

Vocal Fold Atrophy in Patients With Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) can lead to deterioration in voice and swallowing. Vocal fold atrophy (VFA), seen with aging and neurodegenerative disease, results in thin/bowed vocal folds with incomplete glottic closure during voicing and swallowing, leading to breathy voice from air leakage. Magnitude of VFA in AD/ADRD has not been previously studied. This study compared endoscopic measures of VFA in AD/ADRD patients with age-matched controls. METHODS: Thirteen patients with a diagnosis of AD (n = 3), Lewy body dementia (n = 3), vascular dementia (n = 1), or

The 5-HT2A/1A agonist psilocybin disrupts modal object completion associated with visual hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest that the serotonergic system and particularly the 5-HT2A/1A receptors are implicated in visual processing and possibly the pathophysiology of visual disturbances including hallucinations in schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. METHODS: To investigate the role of 5-HT2A/1A receptors in visual processing the effect of the hallucinogenic 5-HT2A/1A agonist psilocybin (125 and 250 μg/kg vs. placebo) on the spatiotemporal dynamics of modal object completion was assessed in normal volunteers (n = 17) using visual evoked potential recordings in conjunction with t

Major depression affects perceptual filling-in.

BACKGROUND: Major depression disorder is a syndrome that involves impairment of cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and plasticity. In this study, we explored whether depression affects perception as well. METHODS: We used a recently developed paradigm that assesses the filling-in process by probing false-positive reports (false alarm [FA]), hit rates (pHit), sensitivity (d'), and decision criteria (Cr). We used a Yes-No paradigm in a low-level detection task involving a Gabor target, in the presence of collinear flankers, inducing filling-in, with differing target-flanker separati

Partial adenoidectomy by suction diathermy in children with cleft palate, to avoid velopharyngeal insufficiency.

OBJECTIVES: Adenoidectomy is indicated for the relief of paediatric nasal obstruction, sleep-disordered breathing and otitis media with effusion (OME). Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) is a rare complication. The main risk factor is the presence of pre-existing velopharyngeal closure-impaired mechanisms, including submucosal or overt cleft palate. Despite possible benefits, adenoidectomy is frequently withheld in such children to avoid VPI. This study aims to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of partial adenoidectomy using suction diathermy in children who previously underwent overt cleft
