Inhibitory activities of essential oils against Babesia canis.

The in vitro anti-Babesia canis activities of nine essential oils were investigated. Among the tested essential oils Achillea millefolium, Eugenia caryophyllus and Citrus grandis were the most active (IC50 values of 51.0, 60.3 and 61.3 μg/mL, respectively). The oils from Abies sibirica, Rosmarinus officinalis, Eucalyptus globulus, Cinnamonum zeylanicum, Mentha piperita and Pinus sylvestris were less active (IC50 values of 134.3, 237.3, 239.3, 367.9, 837.5 and 907.3 μg/mL, respectively). The results support the concept that some essential oil constituents may be useful in the clinical managemen

Induction of antiparasite activity by pine cone lignin-related substances.

Pretreatment with two distinct lignin-related antitumor substances extracted from pine cone of Pinus parviflora Sieb. et Zucc. protected infant mice from Hymenolepis nana (Cestoda) infection. Subcutaneous administration of these fractions (10 mg/kg) to 1 week old mice evoked strong protective immunity against oral infection by Hymenolepis nana eggs. Significant antiparasite effects were also induced in 4 week old mice by intraperitoneal or oral administration of these fractions. These fractions had more potent antiparasite activity than pine cone extracts with lower antitumor and antiviral act

Simple methods to remove microbes from leaf surfaces.

Endophytes have been defined as microorganisms living inside plant tissues without causing negative effects on their hosts. Endophytic microbes have been extensively studied for their plant growth-promoting traits. However, analyses of endophytes require complete removal of epiphytic microorganisms. We found that the established tests to evaluate surface sterility, polymerase chain reaction, and leaf imprints, are unreliable. Therefore, we used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) as an additional assessment of epiphyte removal. We used a diverse suite of sterilization protocols to remove epiphy

Mitochondrial haplotypic diversity of pine cone beetles (Scolytinae: Conophthorus) collected on food sources.

Conophthorus Hopkins attack, oviposit, and feed in immature cones of many pine (Pinus) species. They are a serious pest of pine seed orchards and can destroy up to 100% of the cone crop. Beetles can plague orchards over many years because emerging beetles tend to attack cones of the same or a nearby tree. However, fluctuating pine cone production suggests that beetles may disperse from their natal tree stand to find second-year cones for oviposition. These dispersal behaviors may influence population level genetic diversity, that is, populations may exhibit low or high diversity. In this study

Induction of Listeria monocytogenes infection by the consumption of ponderosa pine needles.

An infectious microorganism, identified as Listeria monocytogenes, has been isolated from the bloodstream of pregnant mice fed a diet containing Pinus ponderosa needles. When the isolate was injected into pregnant mice, reproductive dysfunction and other changes, including speckled livers, spleen atrophy, and hemorrhagic intestines, appeared to mimic the signs of the disease in pregnant mice fed pine needles. Moreover, these pathological changes are similar to those observed in cattle and other mammals experiencing abortions or toxemia, or both, attributed to the ingestion of P. ponderosa need

Quantifying Carbon Losses Associated with Photorespiration and Drought Stress in Two Dominant Mediterranean Pine Species.

Photorespiration and drought-induced stomatal closure are two important physiological constraints that reduce carbon assimilation and productivity in C3 forest trees under Mediterranean climatic conditions. Türkiye's two dominant commercial pine species, Pinus brutia Ten. (Calabrian pine) and Pinus nigra J.F. Arnold subsp. pallasiana (Anatolian black pine), together cover approximately 8.15 million hectares. This study integrated published gas-exchange measurements, radiation-use efficiency estimates from MODIS, official forest inventory data, and dendrochronological growth records into a coun

Therapeutic Potential of Antimicrobial Peptide PN5 against Multidrug-Resistant E. coli and Anti-Inflammatory Activity in a Septic Mouse Model.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become a public health problem. Thus, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been evaluated as substitutes for antibiotics. Herein, we investigated PN5 derived from Pinus densiflora (pine needle). PN5 exhibited antimicrobial activity without causing cytotoxic effects. Based on these results, we examined the mode of action of PN5 against Gram-negative and -positive bacteria. PN5 exhibited membrane permeabilization ability, had antimicrobial stability in the presence of elastase, a proteolytic enzyme, and did not induce resistance in bacteria. Bacterial lipopolysac

Orientation behavior of the predator Laricobius nigrinus (Coleoptera: Derodontidae) to hemlock woolly adelgid and host tree odors in a multi-chambered olfactometer.

We studied the adult ambulatory response of the predator, Laricobius nigrinus Fender (Coleoptera: Derodontidae), to odors from its prey, Adelges tsugae Annand, the hemlock woolly adelgid, and foliage of hemlock woolly adelgid, host hemlocks (Tsuga spp.), and other conifers. Both the predator and hemlock woolly adelgid are apparently native to western North America, but the predator is being released in the eastern United States, which has different hemlock species, for biological control of a lineage of hemlock woolly adelgid inadvertently introduced from Japan. L. nigrinus responded to odors

Successional Shifts in Soil C:N:P stoichiometry and its environmental controls during forest restoration in Huize County, Qujing, Yunnan Province.

Forest restoration reshapes nutrient cycling and soil stoichiometric regulation in fragile plateau ecosystems. To clarify variations in soil C:N:P stoichiometry and its environmental controls during ecosystem recovery on the southwestern China plateau, this study investigated three representative forest types along a restoration gradient, including Pinus yunnanensis forest, mixed conifer broadleaf forest, and secondary evergreen broadleaved forest. Soil samples were collected from three depths of 0-20 cm, 20-50 cm, and 50-80 cm, together with dominant tree leaf samples, and a total of 27 compo

Discovery of murayaquinone from an endophytic bacterium Streptomyces sp. AN140557 as a potent inhibitor of the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

BACKGROUND: Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, the pine wood nematode (PWN), is responsible for causing pine wilt disease (PWD), leading to significant ecological and economic damage in pine forests. Endophytes are well-known producers of bioactive secondary metabolites, offering potential for environmentally friendly control agents. This study focused on identifying and evaluating nematicidal compounds from pine tree endophytes active against PWN. RESULTS: A total of 30 endophytes isolated from Korean pine trees were screened for their nematicidal activity and identified as novel nematicidal agents

[Variation in Thaumetopoea pityocampa infestation rate of Aleppo pine: Effect on dendrometric parameters in the Djelfa region forests (Saharan Atlas, Algeria)].

The forests of the Saharan Atlas represent the southern edge of the natural range of the Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.). These are exposed to climatic stress in relation to drought and attacks of the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa Schiff., denoted by CP in the French text). The purpose of our work is to study the variation of the infestation rate by the pine processionary moth and its density with climatic factors and dendrometric parameters. The infestation rate (7.82%) by the pine processionary moth and its density (2.74±2.61nests/tree) were lower in our pine forests

Nitrogen concentration in mountain pine beetle larvae reflects nitrogen status of the tree host and two fungal associates.

Individual lodgepole pines (Pinus contorta) were fertilized with urea at nitrogen (N) inputs equivalent to 0, 315, or 630 kg/ha. Four months after application of the fertilizer, inner bark tissue N concentrations were significantly higher in the trees that had received the low dose (315 kg/ha) fertilization treatment than in the control trees; trees that had received the high-dose treatment (630 kg/ha) were intermediate and not significantly different from either of the other treatments. There was a significant positive correlation between N concentration in inner bark tissue and larval mounta

A structured threshold model for mountain pine beetle outbreak.

A vigor-structured model for mountain pine beetle outbreak dynamics within a forest stand is proposed and analyzed. This model explicitly tracks the changing vigor structure in the stand. All model parameters, other than beetle vigor preference, were determined by fitting model components to empirical data. An abrupt threshold for tree mortality to beetle densities allows for model simplification. Based on initial beetle density, model outcomes vary from decimation of the entire stand in a single year, to inability of the beetles to infect any trees. An intermediate outcome involves an initial

Trace gas emissions from laboratory combustion of leaves typically consumed in forest fires in Southwest China.

Forest fires are becoming increasingly severe and frequent due to global climate change. Trace gases emitted from forest fires significantly affect atmospheric chemistry and climate change on a regional and global scale. Forest fires occur frequently in Southwest China, but systematic studies on trace gas emissions from forest fires in Southwest China are rare. Leaves of seven typical vegetation fuels based on their prominence in forest fires consumption in Southwest China were burned in a self-designed combustion device and the emission factors of eighteen trace gases (greenhouse gases, non-m

USE OF NATIVE PLANTS FOR REMEDIATION OF TRICHLOROETHYLENE: II. CONIFEROUS TREES.

The phytoremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) from contaminated groundwater has been extensively studied using the hybrid poplar tree (Populus spp.). Several metabolites of TCE have been identified in the tissue of poplar including trichloroethanol (TCEOH) and dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA). In addition to the use of hybrid poplar for the phytoremediation of TCE, it is important to screen native tree species that could be successful candidates for field use. This study involves a greenhouse-based comparison of four different native southeastern conifers to a hybri

Loss of Stomatal Regulation Sensitivity to CO2 and Reduced Xylem Hydraulic Conductivity Contribute to Long-Term Tree Decline and Mortality.

Increasing aridity is a major threat to forests worldwide. Understanding tree functional constraints under drought and their impacts on resilience and mortality among species is crucial to assess the impacts of global change on forests. We analyzed the long-term drought and atmospheric CO2 responses in three Mediterranean co-occurring species with differing drought tolerances (Pinus pinaster < Pinus pinea < Juniperus oxycedrus). In this mixed forest, P. pinaster exhibited widespread mortality and mistletoe infection, P. pinea showed scattered mortality, and J. oxycedrus showed no decline. Usin

Temporal turnover and fire severity shape postfire beetle (Coleoptera) diversity at a forest range edge.

In recent decades, wildfires have increased in frequency and severity, reshaping forest structure and biodiversity. Yet it remains unclear whether postfire insect assemblages are driven primarily by fire severity, vegetation structure, or broader temporal community turnover, particularly in fragmented range-edge forests. We investigated flight-active beetle (Coleoptera) assemblages 2 years after a 2022 wildfire in the Lost Pines region of Texas, an isolated loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) forest at the species' western range margin. Using historical data from 2011, we evaluated temporal turnove

Provenance effect on the fine-root metabolome and structure of mature Scots pine revealed in a long-term common garden experiment.

Rapid changes in temperature and precipitation present a major challenge for long-lived forest trees, as their long generation times limit the required rate of adaptive responses within populations. Common garden experiments provide valuable insights into local adaptation, but belowground responses remain understudied. We investigated fine root metabolomes, biochemistry and structure in 54-year-old Pinus sylvestris L. originating from two contrasting environments: a local lowland site and a colder high-elevation mountain region, both grown in a common garden. Untargeted gas chromatography-tand
